  • This paper deals with finite element analysis for free vibration and forced sinusoidal vibration of Ka- and Ku- band antenna structures using MSC/NASTRAN. The structures are designed to satisfy minimum resonance frequency requirement in order to decouple the dynamic interaction of the satellite antenna with the spacecraft bus structure. The large mass method was utilized to analyze output acceleration according to the forced sinusoidal vibration inputs in X-, Y- and Z- directions. The analysis results can also be used thor verification experimental planning of satellite antenna.

  • In this paper, we present an efficient design scheme based on analysis of design requirements and considerations of baseband packet switch for S-band satellite/terrestrial hybrid multi-beam satellite communication systems. To establish design requirements and considerations, we analyze required functions of baseband packet switch, specifications of multi-beam satellite communications, communication services and performance requirements. And also we analyze and compare conventional layer-2 and layer-3 satellite baseband packet switching techniques, packet switching protocols and packet switch architectures, to apply from analyzed results. Finally, we propose a hardware design scheme of MPEG based layer-2 baseband packet switch using analyzed results.

  • This paper discusses the design of self-oscillating mixer type low noise down converter using the microwave field effect transistor. The mixer is consists of local oscillator in which high stability dielectric resonator and band pass filter to get rid of spurious oscillation at intermediate frequency stage. The microstrip antenna was integrated in the same substrate which generate 12.3GHz and low noise amplifier was also added after antenna using 3 stage of high electron mobility transistors. The output frequency from the local oscillator was chosen as 11.3GHz for the Ku-band application. The measured phase noise was -804dBc/Hz at 100kHz offset frequency, and the gain was 7~12dB in frequency range from 12.0GHz to 12.7GHz. The noise figure at intermediate frequency stage was 64H. The designed model shows less conversion loss than previous diode type mixer. The proposed mixer can be used in digital satellite broadcasting and communication system and expected to use in next generation low noise block design.

  • In this paper, the Low Noise Amplifier(LNA) is designed and fabricated to include a band pass filter characteristics considering the antenna system characteristics according to the transmitting and receiving signal level of communication satellite transponder. As an example, a 2-stage low noise amplifier and a 4-stage amplifier and designed, fabricated and measured at 14,0~14.5GHz of receiving frequency band. This fabricated LNA has shown the gain with very good flatness within pass-band, and its gain decreases rapidly out of band resulting in supperssion of the transmitting signal power leakage. It has shown the 20.3dB +- 0.1dB of pass-band gain, the 1.44dB +-0.04dB of noise figure and the 14dB rejection out of band(12.25~12.75GHz). The gain flatness, noise figure and group delay of this 2-stage LNA satisfactorily met the simulation results. And the fabricated 4-stage amplifier has shown the more than 42dB of pass-band gain, the +-0.25dB of flatness and the 28dB of the rejection effect for transmitting power leakage. The 2-stage LNA and 4-stage amplifier, in this paper, will bring a design margin for the input filter and also result in the system cost reduction.

  • This paper presents the designing/manufacturing scheme of the diplexer for satellite transponder which is composed of 2-channel bandpass filters, coupled with E-plane T-junction, having symmetrical waveguide E-plane step discontinuity structures. The 2-channel bandpass filters of the diplexer are designed by the scheme of connecting ${\lambda}_{g}$/2 shunt stub to the waveguide E-plane, playing the role of heat sinks without attaching a special heat sinks and to give the profitable productivity and allow the low-cost manufacturing at mass production, tuning screws are eliminated which have been used to compensate the operating characteristics of manufactured filters. The 2 channel bandpass filters of manufactured 14/12 GHz diplexer for domestic Ku-band satellite transponder have the return loss of 25 dB, insertion loss of 0.3 dB in passband, and below-50 dB of stopband characteristics (T$_{x}$ : f$_{o}{\pm}$250 MHz, R$_{x}$ : f$_{o}{\pm}$220 MHz) at room temperature.

  • Satellite communication for high altitude platform stations (HAPS) and low earth orbit (LEO) systems suffer from dust and sand (DU&SA) storms in the desert regions such as Saudi Arabia. These attenuations have a distorting effect on signal fidelity at high frequency of operations. This results signal to noise ratio (SNR) to dramatically decreasing and leads to wireless transmission error. The main focus in this paper is to propose common relations between HAPS and LEO for the atmospheric impairments affecting the satellite communication networks operating above Ku-band crossing the propagation path. A double phase three dimensional relationship for HAPS and LEO systems is then presented. The comparison model present the analysis of atmospheric attenuation with specific focus on sand and dust based on particular size, visibility, adding gaseous effects for different frequency, and propagation angle to provide system operations with a predicted vision of satellite parameters' values. Skillful decision and control system (SD&CS) is proposed to control applied parameters that lead to improve satellite network performance and to get the ultimate receiving wireless signal under bad weather condition.

  • A 2 stage 6-pole bandpass filter(BPF) is designed and implemented by using triple-mode cavity for satellite payload system. The BPF has an 100 MHz bandwidth at the center frequency of 14.5 GHz, Ku-band. The cavity filter uses two orthogonal $TE_{113}$ modes and one $TM_{012}$ mode. The intercavity coupling between the adjacent cavities results in a Chebyshev response and is accomplished by H-field component of TE modes. The size and location of intercavity slot are determined by the coupling equation from H-field of TE resonant modes in circular cavity. The measured filter response agrees well with the theoretical data.
