  • This study established a methodology for the application of downscaling technique in a mountainous area having large spatial variations of rainfall and tried to estimate the change of rainfall characteristics in the future under climate change using the established method. The Namhan river basin, which is in the mountainous area of the Korean peninsula, has been chosen as the study area. Artificial Neural Network - Simple Kriging with varying local means (ANN-SKlm) has been built by combining artificial neural network, which is one of the general downscaling techniques, and SKlm technique, which can reflect the geomorphologic characteristics like elevation of the study area. The evaluation of SKlm technique was done by using the monthly rainfalls at six weather stations which KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) is managing in the basin. The ANN-SKlm technique was compared with the Thiessen technique and ordinary kriging(OK) technique. According to the evaluation result of each technique the SKlm technique showed the best result.

  • In this paper, a penalized maximum likelihood estimation (PMLE) method that applies a penalty to increase the accuracy of a basis-screening-based Kriging model (BSKM) is introduced. The maximum order and set of basis functions used in the BSKM are determined according to their importance. In this regard, the cross-validation error (CVE) for the basis functions is employed as an indicator of importance. When constructing the Kriging model (KM), the maximum order of basis functions is determined, the importance of each basis function is evaluated according to the corresponding maximum order, and finally the optimal set of basis functions is determined. This optimal set is created by adding basis functions one by one in order of importance until the CVE of the KM is minimized. In this process, the KM must be generated repeatedly. Simultaneously, hyper-parameters representing correlations between datasets must be calculated through the maximum likelihood evaluation method. Given that the optimal set of basis functions depends on such hyper-parameters, it has a significant impact on the accuracy of the KM. The PMLE method is applied to accurately calculate hyper-parameters. It was confirmed that the accuracy of a BSKM can be improved by applying it to Branin-Hoo problem.

  • The trend analysis of the study was acquired by selecting multiyear monthly groundwater table data and monitors the wells in each sub-district under the study area. The intention of this research was to analyze the outcome of the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test at greater than the significance level which is 95% of groundwater level in Sylhet. The aptitude is effective at two conjunctures where the confidence bounds are 95% and it meets the estimate line of Sen's. To calculate and assess the spatial differences in the inanition of groundwater table, geostatistical methods was applied based on data from 27 groundwater wells during the period from January 1975 to December 2011 which were obtained from a secondary source, Bangladesh Water Development Board. The geographic information system was used to assess the spatial change in order to find the level of groundwater. Cross-validation errors were found within an advisable level in estimating the groundwater depth with different interpolation models of ordinary kriging methods. Finally, surface maps were generated with the best-fitted model. The southeast region was found highly vulnerable from groundwater level point of view. Northern region was detected highest hazard prone area for diverge groundwater using kriging method.

  • Geomechanical parameters are important factors for engineering projects during design, construction and support stages of tunnel and dam projects. Geostatistical estimation methods are known as one of the most significant approach at estimation of Geomechanical parameters. In this study, Azad dam headrace tunnel is chosen to estimate Geomechanical parameters such as Rock Quality Designation (RQD) and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) by ordinary kriging as a geostatistical method. Also Rock Mass Rating (RMR) distribution is presented along the tunnel. Main aim in employment of geostatistical methods is estimation of points that unsampled by sampled points. To estimation of parameters, initially data are transformed to Gaussian distribution, next structural data analysis is completed, and then ordinary kriging is applied. At end, specified distribution maps for each parameter are presented. Results from the geostatistical estimation method and actual data have been compared. Results show that, the estimated parameters with this method are very close to the actual parameters. Regarding to the reduction of costs and time consuming, this method can use to geomechanical estimation.

  • This study employs the KED method using the correlations between probability rainfall and topographical factors as single auxiliary variable for assessing the effectiveness of external variables to improve the reliability in the estimation of spatial distribution of probability rainfall. As a result, the KED method gives similar results compared with deterministic spatial interpolation methods and kriging methods in the estimation of rainfall spatial distribution and mean areal rainfall, and as a result of the cross-validations of KED and kriging methods, the KED method using terrain elevation as auxiliary variable gives the best results, which are not significantly different in comparisons with other methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop geostatistical methods for selection of prospective areas of polymetallic nodule deposits in KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area of the North-East Pacific Ocean. In this study $110{\times}165$ grid system was used, and each node represents the center of an estimated block of $1km{\times}1km$. The ordinary kriging was applied to SeaBeam2000 data in order to evaluate the bathymetry. A structural analysis (variogram) of the bathymetry data was carried out for constructing digital terrain model (DTM) and the maximum slopes of the bathymetry were calculated by DTM data. The above method can be used to solve the problem that is resulted from the lack of theory of a change of support model for the maximum slope of the bathymetry. The ordinary kriging and the indicator kriging were used to evaluate the nodule abundance, and the different two kriging methods were compared to evaluate the accuracy for the estimation of the nodule abundance. It has been shown that indicator kriging was better estimation tool than the ordinary kriging. The overlay map is presented for the selection of potentially minable sites by combining the two indicator maps of the nodule abundance and the maximum slope of bathymetry. This overlay map could be utilized to establish follow-up survey and to investigate the potentially minable sites in the KODOS area.

  • A new method to estimate the mean areal precipitation using kriging is developed. Unlike the conventional approach, points for double and quadruple numerical integrations in the kriging equation are selected randomly, given the boundary of area of interest. This feature eliminates the conventional approach's necessity of dividing the area into subareas and calculating the center of each subarea, which in turn makes the developed method more powerful in the case of complex boundaries. The algorithm to select random points within an arbitrary boundary, based on the theory of complex variables, is described. The results of Monte Carlo simulation showed that the error associated with estimation using randomly selected points is inversely proportional to the square root of the number of sampling points.

  • In the Republic of Korea, Ministry of Construction & Transportation and Korea Water Resources Corporation manage the national groundwater monitoring network at the 169 stations and will organize the supplementary groundwater monitoring network at the 10,000 stations by 2011 year. The method that organizes the monitoring network was developed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process with pairwise comparison. Several estimation factors for the estimating every district were selected to reflect each district conditions. Their weighting value was decided by pairwise comparison and questions to the experts about groundwater The optimal number of groundwater monitoring well was calculated through the developed method. To verify this method, groundwater was monitored in Jeonju city by way showing the example. The study area In Jeonju city needs 7 stations for the supplementary groundwater monitoring network. The results monitored in 7 stations inferred the groundwater level around the study area by Kriging. The mean of residual between inferred groundwater level value from Kriging and actual groundwater level is rather low. Furthermore, the mean and standard deviation of residual between inferred groundwater level change and actual groundwater change is much lower. The Fact that 7 monitoring stations are sufficient for observing the groundwater condition in the study area makes it possible for suggested monitoring number to be proper.

  • In this study, we present the optimization of a head slider using kriging method in order to reduce lift-off force during unloading process with satisfying reliable flying attitude in steady state. To perform an optimization process efficiently, a simplified lift-off force model, which is a function of air bearing suction force and flying attitudes, is created by kriging method. The EMDIOS, which is the process integration and design optimization software developed by iDOT, is used to automatically wrap the analysis with the optimization and efficiently implements the repetitive works between analyzer and optimizer. An optimization problem is formulated to reduce the lift-off force during unloading process while satisfying the flying attitude in reliable range over the entire recording band and reducing the probability of contact between slider and disk. The simulation result shows that the amplitude of lift-off force of optimized L/UL slider is reduced about 62%, compared with that of initial slider model. It is demonstrated by the dynamics L/UL simulation that the optimum slider incorporated with the suspension is not only smoothly loaded onto disk but also properly unloaded onto the ramp.
