Kriging is a nonparametric regression method used in geostatistics for estimating curves and surfaces for spatial data. It may come as a surprise that the Kriging estimator, normally derived as the best linear unbiased estimator, is also the solution of a particular variational problem. Thus, Kriging estimators can also be interpreted as generalized smoothing splines where the roughness penalty is determined by the covariance function of a spatial process. We build off the early work by Silverman (1982, 1984) and the analysis by Cox (1983, 1984), Messer (1991), Messer and Goldstein (1993) and others and develop an equivalent kernel interpretation of geostatistical estimators. Given this connection we show how a given covariance function influences the bias and variance of the Kriging estimate as well as the mean squared prediction error. Some specific asymptotic results are given in one dimension for Matern covariances that have as their limit cubic smoothing splines.

This study aims to accurately estimate population distribution more specifically than administrative unites using a RK (Regression-Kriging) model. The RK model is the areal interpolation technique that involves linear regression and the Kriging model. In order to estimate a population’s distribution using a sample region, four different models were used, namely; a regression model, RK model, OK (Ordinary Kriging) model and CK (Co-Kriging) model. The results were then compared with each other. Evaluation of the accuracy and validity of evaluation analysis results were the basis RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), MAE (Mean Absolute Error), G statistic and correlation coefficient (ρ). In the sample regions, every statistic value of the RK model showed better results than other models. The results of this comparative study will be useful to estimate a population distribution of the metropolitan areas with high population density
This study proposed an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) method ensemble with kriging model for model updating. By introducing genetic algorithm (GA) and grouping strategy together with elite selection into standard particle optimization (PSO), the IPSO is obtained. Kriging metamodel serves for predicting the structural responses to avoid complex computation via finite element model. The combination of IPSO and kriging model shall provide more accurate searching results and obtain global optimal solution for model updating compared with the PSO, Simulate Annealing PSO (SimuAPSO), BreedPSO and PSOGA. A plane truss structure and ASCE Benchmark frame structure are adopted to verify the proposed approach. The results indicated that the hybrid of kriging model and IPSO could serve for model updating effectively and efficiently. The updating results further illustrated that IPSO can provide superior convergent solutions compared with PSO, SimuAPSO, BreedPSO and PSOGA.
The GOSAT (Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite) data provide new opportunities the most regionally complete and up-to-date assessment of $CO_2$. However, in practice, GOSAT records often suffer from missing data values mainly due to unfavorable meteorological condition in specific time periods of data acquisition. The aim of this research was to identify optimal spatial interpolation techniques to ensure the continuity of $CO_2$ from samples taken in the North East Asia. The accuracy among ordinary kriging (OK), universal kriging (UK) and simple kriging (SK) was compared based on the combined consideration of $R^2$ values, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Error (ME) for variogram models. Cross validation for 1312 random sampling points indicate that the (UK) kriging is the best geostatistical method for spatial predictions of $CO_2$ in the East Asia region. The results from this study can be useful for selecting optimal kriging algorithm to produce $CO_2$ map of various landscapes. Also, data users may benefit from a statistical approach that would allow them to better understand the uncertainty and limitations of the GOSAT sample data.

A Kriging model is a sort of approximation model and used as a deterministic model of a computationally expensive analysis or simulation. Although it has various advantages, it is difficult to assess the accuracy of the approximated model. It is generally known that a mean square error (MSE) obtained from the kriging model can't calculate statistically exact error bounds contrary to a response surface method, and a cross validation is mainly used. But the cross validation also has many uncertainties. Moreover, the cross validation can't be used when a maximum error is required in the given region. For solving this problem, we first proposed a modified mean square error which can consider relative errors. Using the modified mean square error, we developed the strategy of adding a new sample to the place that the MSE has the maximum when the MSE is used for the assessment of the kriging model. Finally, we offer guidelines for the use of the MSE which is obtained from the kriging model. Four test problems show that the proposed strategy is a proper method which can assess the accuracy of the kriging model. Based on the results of four test problems, a convergence coefficient of 0.01 is recommended for an exact function approximation.
This paper is focused on the spatial variability of measured strong motion data during earthquake and its relationship with the performance of water distribution pipelines and residential buildings. Analyses of strong motion and the correlations of peak ground velocity (PGV) and pipeline and building damage were conducted with a very large geographical information system (GIS) database including the relationship of time and earthquake intensity and the measured location, and Kriging spatial statistics. Kriging was used to develop regressions of pipeline repair rate (RR) and residential building damage ratio (DR) associated with $90\%$ confidence peak ground velocity (PGV). Such regressions using Kriging provide an explicit means of characterizing the uncertainty embodied in the strong motion data compared with other spacial statistics such as inverse distance method.

We have performed a design optimization of a stiffened panel with curvilinear stiffeners using an artificial neural network (ANN) residual kriging based surrogate modeling approach. The ANN residual kriging based surrogate modeling involves two steps. In the first step, we approximate the objective function using ANN. In the next step we use kriging to model the residue. We optimize the panel in an iterative way. Each iteration involves two steps-shape optimization and size optimization. For both shape and size optimization, we use ANN residual kriging based surrogate model. At each optimization step, we do an initial sampling and fit an ANN residual kriging model for the objective function. Then we keep updating this surrogate model using an adaptive sampling algorithm until the minimum value of the objective function converges. The comparison of the design obtained using our optimization scheme with that obtained using a traditional genetic algorithm (GA) based optimization scheme shows satisfactory agreement. However, with this surrogate model based approach we reach optimum design with less computation effort as compared to the GA based approach which does not use any surrogate model.

Kriging has been effectively used to approximate for optimization. This study has been devised to improve efficiency and accuracy of approximate optimal design using Kriging. The design of experiments (DOE), the classical design and space-filling design, are used to provide maximum information using minimum number of design of experiments. The proposed methodology is applied to the designs of 3-bar truss and Sandgren's pressure vessel.
This paper presents a multivariate kriging algorithm that integrates categorical data as secondary data for spatial interpolation of sparsely sampled ground survey data. Instead of using constant mean values in each attribute of categorical data, disaggregated local mean values at target grid points are first estimated by area-to-point kriging and then are used as local mean values in simple kriging with local means. This algorithm is illustrated through a case study of spatial interpolation of a geochemical copper element with geological map data. Cross validation results indicates that the presented algorithm leads to significant respective improvement of 15% and 25% in prediction capability, compared with univariate ordinary kriging and conventional simple kriging with constant mean values. It is expected that the multivariate kriging algorithm applied in this study would be effectively applied for spatial interpolation with categorical data.

In order to guarantee the stability of a tunnel and its optimum design, it is very important to obtain enough ground investigation data. In realty, however, it is not the case due to the limitation of measuring spatially distributed data and economical reasons. Especially, there are regions where drilling is impossible due to civil appeal and mountainous topology, and it is also difficult to estimate rock mass classes quantitatively with only geophysical exploration data. In this study, therefore, 3 dimensional multiple indicator kriging (3D-MI kriging), which can incorporate geophysical exploration data and drill core data off a tunnel center line, is proposed to cope with such problems. To this end, two dimensional mutiple indicator kriging, which is one of the geostatistical techniques, is extended for three dimensional analysis. Also, the proposed 3D-MI kriging was applied to determine the rock mass classes by RMR system for the design of a Kyungbu express rail way tunnel.
