  • We made Korean IAPS through measuring Korean university students' emotional response(arousal and emotional valence) about the whole 956 IAPS pictures made by Lang et al.(2005). In addition, we examined the emotional difference between American and Korean by comparing the response of original American IAPS and those of Korean IAPS. The results showed that both response of arousal and emotional valence in Korean were highly correlated with those in American respectively. In details, two groups showed differences as well as similarities. Korean showed higher arousal response than American, but in both groups women showed higher arousal response than men. When examining the emotional valence of positive, neutral, and negative stimuli categorized by American IAPS, Korean showed more modest emotional valence than American, and this group difference was the same in both men and women. In particular, Korean women showed more negative emotional valence than Korean men, but American women showed more extreme emotional valence than American men. These results suggest that there are some cultural and sex differences in the emotional response, and that researchers have to consider them when studying with IAPS stimuli.

  • Since the introduction of Western concept of nursing to Korea in late 1880s, Korean nursing practice has evolved into Korean culture. The purpose of this study was to explore and identify similarities and differences in hospital nursing practice between Korea and the United States using the grounded theory method. The data were gathered from 15 Korean nurses working in U.S. hospitals using semi-structured, in-depth interview method. Major similarities in nursing practice between Korea and U.S. existed in the 7 domains that Benner indicated in 1984. The nursing administration system was also similar in both countries. On the other hand, differences existed in how nurses execute these domains of nursing practice. These are the roles of nurses. nurse aides and family members. and the interpersonal relationships, and problem presentation and problem-solving strategies. American family members rarely participated in the patient's bedside nursing care, while Korean family members actively participated. American nurse aide participated in direct patient care, while Korean nurse aides did not. Also Korean nurses were participated more in administering and managiang the patient's diagnostic and treatment modalities, while American nurses foucused on the needs and demands of the patient. In terms of interpersonal relationships, American patients were more self-centered and demanding than Korean. American nurses focused more on the right of individuals while Korean nurses were more oriented to harmony with the coworkers. With inferiors and superiors, American members were more egalitarian, while Koreans tended to be hierachical. In ways of suggesting problems, American nurses tended to pick out the problems more frequently than Korean nurses did.. As to ways to solve the problems, American nurses relied heavily on explicit verbal explanations, while Korean nurses relied more on bodily action and behaviors. The results of this comparative study contribute to nursing by adding knowledge on the theory of culture care by describing the similarities and differences in nursing practice between Korea and the United States.

  • This study deals with a research on Korean American economy and Korean banks operated in California where a large percentage of Korean residents in the U.S. is concentrated. Using date published by U.S. Census and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), quantitative analyses have been performed on the asset, employment, market share and other features of selected Korean American financial institutions. Also, each bank's status of financing and asset management are reviewed through the analysis of its balance sheets. The outcome of analysis on the status of Korean American banks are summarized as follows: First, Korean American banks are shown to be growing to become major banks with equivalent scale as mainstream banks. Second, the recently improved fundamentals of Korean American banks are identified. Third, the operational performances of Korean American banks are verified to be similar to the average of Californian banks.

  • This study examines the influence of acculturation level and ethnic groups as a fashion reference group on Korean-American consumer attitude toward luxury fashion brands. Of interest is the role of Korean culture, which emphasizes luxury brand consumption due to the Confucion value of 'face', on Korean-American attitudes toward luxury brands. Data were collected from 108 young Korean-Americans living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and multiple regressions were conducted for the analysis. In general, the respondents had relatively negative attitudes toward luxury fashion brands. Even though the acculturation level did not have a significant influence, attitudes toward luxury fashion brands were influenced by Korean reference groups. Age at immigration did not have a significant relationship with attitudes toward luxury brands. Korean-Americans who maintain ties with Korean culture are more likely to have a positive attitude towards luxury fashion, regardless of familarity with American culture.

  • This paper shows that digital libraries can be understood through STIN models which emphasize interactions among components in networks. The enrollment strategies in the American Memory make human and non-human factors interact. Specifically, this paper articulates that the relationships between users and collections, between users and staff, and between users and users are closely linked through the strategies . Observing the linkages among these components ,this paper found that the enrollment processes not only draw users to the American Memory, but also alter roles of components and creates new roles and players for them. The alterations of roles and the resulting changes of relationships among components mean that digital libraries lead to transform the grounding of knowledge works in a society.

  • In the present paper we describe a class of Gorenstein, finite and at morphism ${\varrho}$: $X{\rightarrow}Y$ of degree 6 of algebraic varieties, called Anglo-American covers. We prove a general Bertini theorem for them and we give some evidence that the cover ${\varrho}$: $A{\rightarrow}\mathbb{P}_k^2$ associated general (1, 3)-polarized abelian surface is Anglo-American.

  • This paper presents a formula that relates the optimal exercise boundaries of American call and put options on futures contract. It is shown that the geometric mean of the optimal exercise boundaries for call and put written on the same futures contract with the same exercise price is equal to the exercise price which is time invariant. The paper also investigates the properties of American calls and puts on futures contract.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare clothing values and clothing purchasing behaviors between Korean and American college students, especially men. Also this study was to analyze the clothing values effect on the clothing purchasing behavior. For the practical study, 200 questionaries were surveyed, 110 from Korea and 105 from American. The average and frequency, t-test, $\chi^2$, multi-variate analysis of variance and factor analysis were used for this study. The result showed, first, there were little differences in the clothing value aspect. Both Korean college men and American college men considered the theoretical value to be most important, however, the American college men were higher than the Korean college men for theoretical, economic and political values. Compared to the Americans, the Koreans considered social clothing value to be more important but theoretical, economic and political values were less important. Second, there were some differences in most of all the clothing purchasing behaviors. There were slight differences in the reasons for the purchases between Korean and American college men. Both of them said that they purchase clothes to satisfy their needs. Regarding the information sources for the purchase, The Korean college men were slightly higher than the American college men for the media information sources and lower than them for the human information sources. Regarding the place where the clothes were purchased, the Korean college men preferred to make purchases at department stores, and the American college men preferred shopping malls. Regarding the monthly expenses for clothing, less than 50,000 won($50) was the average for most of the Korean women, but most of the American college women spent 100,000~150,000 won($150) per month. Third, the clothing value was different in the reason for purchasing, the purchasing information source, the purchasing place, and the monthly expenses for the clothing.

  • The influence of depression, self-esteem, and well-being components of maternal psychological environment on child behavior problems was examined in Korean and American populations. Findings were that the level of mother's self-esteem was lower in Korean than in American mothers; the level of mother's "autonomy" and "environmental mastery" was lower in Korean than in American mothers; and "somatic complaints" were more frequent in the Korean group. The relationship between maternal psychological environment and child behavior problems was greater in the American group. In the Korean group, autonomy and enviornmental mastery were negative components causing both internalized and externalized behavor problems in children. Mothers' depression was the most powerful variable, affecting internalized and externalized behavior problems in both Korean and American groups.
