Purpose : This study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of 3T-TOF MR angiography (3T-TOF MRA) compared with transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) and conventional angiography (CA) in patients with suspected cerebral infarction. Materials and Methods : Fifty four patients with clinical symptoms of cerebral infarction were involved in this study, and had undergone 3T-TOF MRA and TCD, with CA in 11 patients. On the basis of divisions of the carotid artery, four groups were designated: group I, both vertebral arteries and basilar artery; group II, segment between 2 cm below bifurcation of common carotid artery and genu portion of internal carotid artery; group III, segment between petrous portion of internal carotid artery and bifurcation of anterior and middle cerebral artery; group IV, from bifurcation of anterior and middle cerebral artery to thier distal branches. Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed the vascular imaging and stenosis in 3T-TOF MRA, TCD, and CA. Results : A total of 432 arteries, 108 in each group, were available. The assessment of vascular imaging quality in 3T-TOF MRA is scored 2.98, 2.96, 2.91, 2.88 in 4 groups, respectively. Agreement among 3T-TOF MR angiography, TCD, and CA was high. Conclusion : 3T-TOF MR angiography may be useful method for the assessment of stenotic lesions of cranial vasculature in patients with cerebral infarction.
Purpose : To evaluate if at the time of diagnosis of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, MR imaging is superior to radiographs for identifying patients with a favorable long term prognosis as determined by maintenance of a spherical configuration of the femoral head epiphysis on follow-up radiographs. Materials and Methods : We retrospectively analyzed plain radiographs and MR images of 48 femoral heads in 41 patients with Legg-Calve-Perthes disease at time of diagnosis. Femoral head involvement was estimated on initial plain radiographs and MR images using the Catterall classification. Prognosis as determined by maximum femoral head deformity was determined on follow-up radiographs evaluated according to Stulberg classification. Results: Catterall classification of greater than 1 at MR imaging had 100% sensitivity (14/14) for detecting patients with a poor prognosis as indicated by deformity of the femoral head on follow-up radiographs (Stulberg class > 2). Initial radiographs had a lower sensitivity of 57% (8/14) for detecting patients with poor prognosis. Specificity for MR imaging was 21% (7/34) which was not significantly different from 32% (11/34) specificity for initial radiographs. Conclusion: Catterall group 1 at initial MR imaging indicates favorable prognosis for Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Patients with more extensive involvement of the femoral head can have a good outcome, however they are at risk for loss of spherical configuration of the femoral head and subsequent osteoarthritis in adulthood. MR imaging may be superior to radiographs for identifying a subgroup of patients with favorable prognosis.
Purpose : To investigate the feasibility and accuracy of Proton Resonance Frequency (PRF) shift based magnetic resonance (MR) temperature mapping utilizing the self-developed center array-sequencing phase unwrapping (PU) method for non-invasive temperature monitoring. Materials and Methods : The computer simulation was done on the PU algorithm for performance evaluation before further application to MR thermometry. The MR experiments were conducted in two approaches namely PU experiment, and temperature mapping experiment based on the PU technique with all the image postprocessing implemented in MATLAB. A 1.5T MR scanner employing a knee coil with $T2^*$ GRE (Gradient Recalled Echo) pulse sequence were used throughout the experiments. Various subjects such as water phantom, orange, and agarose gel phantom were used for the assessment of the self-developed PU algorithm. The MR temperature mapping experiment was initially attempted on the agarose gel phantom only with the application of a custom-made thermoregulating water pump as the heating source. Heat was generated to the phantom via hot water circulation whilst temperature variation was observed with T-type thermocouple. The PU program was implemented on the reconstructed wrapped phase images prior to map the temperature distribution of subjects. As the temperature change is directly proportional to the phase difference map, the absolute temperature could be estimated from the summation of the computed temperature difference with the measured ambient temperature of subjects. Results : The PU technique successfully recovered and removed the phase wrapping artifacts on MR phase images with various subjects by producing a smooth and continuous phase map thus producing a more reliable temperature map. Conclusion : This work presented a rapid, and robust self-developed center array-sequencing PU algorithm feasible for the application of MR temperature mapping according to the PRF phase shift property.
Purpose: Early detection of recurrence is an important factor for long term survival of patients with colorectal cancer. Measurement of serum levels of CEA, CA 19-9, CT and PET/CT has been commonly used in the postoperative surveillance of colorectal cancer. The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic ability of PET/CT, tumor marker and CT for recurrence in colorectal cancer patients after treatment. Materials and Methods: F-18 FDG PET/CT imaging was performed in 189 colorectal cancer patients who underwent curative surgical resection and/or chemotherapy. Measurement of serum levels of CEA, CA 19-9 and CT imaging were performed within 2 months of PET/CT examination. Final diagnosis of recurrence was made by biopsy, radiologic studies or clinical follow-up for 6 months after each study. Results: Overall sensitivity, specificity of PET/CT was 94.7%, 91.1%, while those of serum CEA were 44.7% and 97.3%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity were 94.2%, 90.4% for PET/CT and better than those of combined CEA and CA 19-9 measurement(52.1%, 88.5%) in 174 patients measured available both CEA and CA 19-9 data. In 115 patients with both tumor markers and CT images available, PET/CT showed similar sensitivity but higher specificity(92.9%, 91.3%) compared to combination of tumor markers and CT images(92.9%, 74.1%). Conclusion: PET/CT was superior for detection of recurred colorectal cancer patients compared with both CEA, CA 19-9, and even with combination of both tumor markers and CT. Therefore PET/CT could be used as a routine surveillance examination to detect recurrence or metastasis of colorectal cancer.
Purpose: To determine optimal imaging time for diagnostic I-123 whole body scan in the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer(DTC), we compared the image quality of 6- and 24-hour images of the same subjects. Materials and Methods: Four hundred ninety-eight patients(M:F = 55:443, Age $47.6{\pm}12.9$ years) with DTC who had undergone total thyroidectomy and I-131 ablation therapy underwent diagnostic whole body scanning 6 hour and 24 hour after oral ingestion of 185 MBq(5 mCi) of I-123. Serum thyroglobulin measurement and ultrasonography of the neck were performed at the time of imaging. In 40 patients underwent additional I-131 therapy, post-therapy I-131 images were obtained and compared with diagnostic I-123 images. Results: In 440 patients(88.4%), 6- and 24-hour diagnostic I-123 images were concordant, and 58 patients(11.6%) showed discordant findings. Among 58 discordant patients, 31 patients showed abnormal tracer uptake on only 6-hour image, which turned out false-positive findings in all cases. In 12 patients with positive findings on only 24-hour image, remnant thyroid tissue(4 patients) and cervical lymph node metastasis(3 patients) were presented. Among 40 patients underwent additional I-131 therapy, 6-hour and 24-hour images were discordant in 13 patients. All 5 patients with abnormal uptake on only 6-hour image revealed false-positive results, whereas most of 24-hour images were concordant with post-therapy I-131 images. Conclusion: I-123 imaging at 24-hour could reduce false-positive findings and improve diagnostic accuracy, compared with 6-hour image in the follow-up of patient with DTC.
Objective: To investigate the prevalence, the distribution of deciduosis, and the relationship with endometriosis in fertile women during Cesarean delivery. Methods: In this study, pelvic tissues suspicious for ectopic deciduas were taken for biopsy during Cesarean section from 154 parturients of full term pregnancy from January 1990 to December 2003. And then those patients were followed up till April 2008. Results: Tissues from 94 parturients (94/154, 61%) were evaluated histopathologically, and ectopic decidua was observed in 70.2% (66/94). Ectopic sites were ovaries only (65/94, 69.1%), ovaries and uterine serosa (12/94, 12.8%), uterine serosa only (9/94, 9.6%), and pelvic serosa. Twenty seven (27/66, 40.9%) parturients had past history of diagnosis and treatments for endometriosis. We have tried to connect 39 (39/66, 59.1%) patients who had never been diagnosed for endometriosis but pathologically confirmed for deciduosis, and 18 patients were able to contact by phone. Twelve patients (12/18, 66.6%) showed no symptoms of endometriosis and had not received any treatments for endometriosis. Conclusion: We can conclude that most of incidental cases confirmed pathologically for deciduosis during pregnancy do not symptomatically progress.

Objectives: Many neurological diseases are known to be caused by expansion of trinucleotide repeats (TNRs). It is hard to diagnose the alteration of TNRs with single cell level for preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). In this study, we describe methods optimized for PGD of TNRs related diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD), spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3) and fragile X syndrome (FXS). Methods: We performed the preclinical assays with heterozygous patient's lymphocytes by single cell PCR strategy. Fluorescent semi-nested PCR and fragment analysis using automatic genetic analyzer were applied for HD and SCA 3. Whole genome amplification with multiple displacement amplification (MDA) method and fluorescent PCR were carried out for FXS. Amplification and allele drop-out (ADO) rate were evaluated in each case. Results: The fluorescent semi-nested PCR of single lymphocyte showed 100.0% of amplification and 14.0% of ADO rate in HD, and 94.7% of amplification and 5.6% of ADO rate in SCA3, respectively. We could not detect the PCR product of CGG repeats in FXS using the fluorescent semi-nested PCR alone. After applying the MDA method in FXS, 84.2% of amplification and 31.3% of ADO rate were achieved. Conclusions: Fluorescent semi-nested PCR is a reliable method for PGD of HD and SCA3. The advanced MDA method overcomes the problem of amplification failure in CGG repeats of FXS case. Optimization of methods for single cell analysis could improve the sensitivity and reliability of PGD for complicated single gene disorders of TNRs.

Nanoporous $TiO_2$ films are commonly used as working electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). So far, there have been attempts to synthesize films with various $TiO_2$ nanostructures to increase the power-conversion efficiency. In this work, vertically aligned rutile $TiO_2$ nanorods were grown on fluorinated tin oxide (FTO) glass by hydrothermal synthesis, followed by deposition of an anatase $TiO_2$ film. This new method of anatase $TiO_2$ growth avoided the use of a seed layer that is usually required in hydrothermal synthesis of $TiO_2$ electrodes. The dense anatase $TiO_2$ layer was designed to behave as the electron-generating layer, while the less dense rutile nanorods acted as electron-transfer pathwaysto the FTO glass. In order to facilitate the electron transfer, the rutile phase nanorods were treated with a $TiCl_4$ solution so that the nanorods were coated with the anatase $TiO_2$ film after heat treatment. Compared to the electrode consisting of only rutile $TiO_2$, the power-conversion efficiency of the rutile-anatase hybrid $TiO_2$ electrode was found to be much higher. The total thickness of the rutile-anatase hybrid $TiO_2$ structures were around $4.5-5.0{\mu}m$, and the highest power efficiency of the cell assembled with the structured $TiO_2$ electrode was around 3.94%.

The goal of this paper was to improve the performance of the adsorbent to remove $H_2S$. Pellet type adsorbents were prepared by using four kinds of materials ($Fe_2O_3$, $Ca(OH)_2$, Activated carbon, $Al(OH)_2)$ for use as a basic carrier. As the results of $H_2S$ adsorption tests, $Fe_2O_3$ and Activated Carbon improved the adsorption performance of $H_2S$ by 1.5 ~ 2 times, and $Ca(OH)_2$ and $Al(OH)_2$ showed no effect on $H_2S$ adsorption performance. Four basic materials were as carriers, and 5 wt% of KI, KOH and $K_2CO_3$ were added on the carriers, respectively. As the results of $H_2S$ adsorption tests, adsorbent containing $K_2CO_3$ showed the best performance. As a result of $H_2S$ adsorption test with varying $K_2CO_3$ content from 5 to 30 wt%, it was confirmed that adsorption performance was increased up to 20 wt% of $K_2CO_3$ and adsorption performance decreased to 30 wt%. The $H_2S$ adsorption performance was modeled by using Thomas model with varying $K_2CO_3$ contents and the results were used for the adsorption tower design. It was shown that the experimental values and the simulated values were in good agreement with the contents range of $K_2CO_3$ up to 20 wt%. Based on these results, it is expected that not only the adsorption performance of $H_2S$ adsorbent is improved but also life time of the adsorbent is increased.

The influences of some factors involved in removing glucose from egg white by the glucose oxidase system be fore drying were investigated. And the properties between foams prepared from raw and enzyme-treat ed egg white was compared. The results obtained we re summarized as follows; 1. The dianisidine method was found to be suitable for the measurement of egg white glucose in the range up to 100ug/ml. 2. The optimal pH of glucose oxidase activity on glucose was found to be a bout 5.0, and thats activity was most stable in the pH range of about 4.0~5.0 when that enzyme was treat ed for 30 minute at $50^{\circ}C$. 3. The optimal temperature for glucose oxidase reaction on glucose was found to be about $20^{\circ}C$, and that enzyme activity was s table up to $50^{\circ}C$. 4. The removing rate of glucose from egg white with glucose oxidase was influenced by the enzyme concentration, pH and oxygen addition, and the react ion time of the desugarization was about 10 hour sunder the conditions of 0.5% hydrogen peroxide, pH 7.0 and $26^{\circ}C$. 5. All of the each egg white treated with glucose oxidase, glucose oxidase+pancreatin, glucose oxidase+trypsin showed highly foaming ability than that of natural egg white(control), but thats foam stability, on the contrary, was reversed.
