The Effect of eWOM on Movie Sales Considering Competition and Culture

  • This paper aims to empirically analyze how competitive and cultural factors moderate the relationship between electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) characteristics and sales in the US and Korean film industries. A conceptual model was developed based on the cue utilization theory (CUT) to analyze the role of cultural and competitive factors that moderate the relationship between three characteristics of eWOM (volume, valence, and variance) and movie sales. Data of 45 days of 163 films released in Korea and the US were collected and a total of 7,335 samples were analyzed by panel regression. As results, competitive factors enhanced the influence of the eWOM of a focal film and this moderating effect depended on the eWOM characteristics. It also revealed that the effect of eWOM had a greater effect on movie sales in Korea than in the US.

  • This study examines the meaning of retro phenomenon and its background of establishment that showed in the pop culture. And it finds out the retro phenomena in the domestic fashion trends. And it defines the characteristics of dress and its ornament in the retro phenomena that have shown in the Korean movies since 1998. By doing this, it examines the relationship between movie dress and street fashion while it compares the styles in the 50s 70s with the retro fashion that is currently emerging. The results of the study are as follows. First, the hippie look in the 60s represented a distinctive characteristic of how they rejected traditional lifestyles. Hippie's romantic femininity that showed in the movie of 'Oollala Sisters' received a spotlight as a necessary style in the modern fashion trend. Second, while the funk look in the 70s was a style of disorder and disgust, the movie gives it a possibility of fashion with a converted sense as a vanguard fashion while embracing the funk look. Third, the layered look in the 70s was expressed with layered items, while the current layered look emphasizes layered textiles as shown in the movie of 'Hae-Jeok Became The Disco King'. Fourth, the feminine look which was a symbol of restraint shows a mixed style with delicate feminine items as shown in the movies, 'The Harmonium In My Memory' and 'Ditto'. Fifth, the training look that has two stripes as shown in the movie 'the Friends' is considered as casual wear, which is functional and easy to move at the end of the 20th century. Finally, the romantic images of school look, as shown in the movies 'the Friends' and 'Hae-Jeok Became The Disco King', show a renewed mixed & unique style. This study has its significance in the sense that it verifies the fact that the movie dress does not show the characteristics of the works that momentarily passes the screen, but it becomes a foundation of the future fashion design. At this time that Korean movies are highly developing, a through study on the movie fashion will not only give a direction of future in the modern fashion, but it will also give a developing momentum in the Korean movie dress.

  • Cultural policy, a part of ideological policy has affected remarkable changes in movie and animation. Korean animation was called cartoon movie and popular only among children, but works dealing with anti-communism ideology have been introduced in Korea since before/after 1970s. Animation focusing on ideology is not unique in Korea, but division of two Koreas after Korean War made great influence on social, cultural and educational aspects of the nation. Moreover, modification in movie-related laws and regulations made in 1960s - 1970s affected movie and animation significantly and is a means of strengthening anti-communism. In particular, Director Cheong-gi Kim's released in 1978 is meaningful in that it is the first long piece of animation movie. In this study, I clarify anticommunistic ideology reflected on the anticommunistic animations and the imageable expression of ideology reflected on . Most of all, I emphasize on clarifying how the cultural policies and social & cultural background influence on the advent of anticommunistic animation in 1960${\sim}$1970. Also, to communicate anticommunistic ideology reflected on produced under the social & cultural background, I clarify the expressive characteristic which the image of animation has.

A Post-Colonial Significance of the Mimicry and Translation in The Host (탈식민주의 관점에서 본 [괴물]의 영화적 모방과 번역의 의미)

  • This article attenpts to analyze, from the perspective of post-colonialism, 'Goemul'(English title, The Host), the Korean blockbuster movie that scored the greatest box-office success in the history of the Korean cinema. As Goemul eagerly copies the monster movie, a representative genre of Hollywood movies, it has close affinity with Hollywood blockbuster movie in many repects. At the same time, however, it also contains a resistance discourse that criticizes and mocks colonial of Korean society under American influences. This movie successfully carries out a post-colonial cultural translation that transforms mimicry into resistance to colonialsim. Hence, this artcle focuses on how Goemul borrows many aspects of the Hollywood monster movie but goes beyond the simple copying of it to reach post-colonial signification subverting the existing cultural regime.

  • This study examined the characteristics of movie reviews based on emotional expressions, using the structural analysis. Major results were as follows; firstly, the most cited emotional expression was 'fun'. Fun was the important discriminator for evaluating movies. Secondly, cluster analysis results found that although Korean movies were clustered by many emotional expressions such as fun, immersion and impression, foreign movies were grouped by joust an emotional expression including fun. Internet users tended to divide foreign movie into two kinds of movies such as fun movie and boring movies.

CNN Architecture Predicting Movie Rating from Audience's Reviews Written in Korean (한국어 관객 평가기반 영화 평점 예측 CNN 구조)

  • In this paper, we present a movie rating prediction architecture based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Our prediction architecture extends TextCNN, a popular CNN-based architecture for sentence classification, in three aspects. First, character embeddings are utilized to cover many variants of words since reviews are short and not well-written linguistically. Second, the attention mechanism (i.e., squeeze-and-excitation) is adopted to focus on important features. Third, a scoring function is proposed to convert the output of an activation function to a review score in a certain range (1-10). We evaluated our prediction architecture on a movie review dataset and achieved a low MSE (e.g., 3.3841) compared with an existing method. It showed the superiority of our movie rating prediction architecture.

Usefulness and capability of three-dimensional, full high-definition movies for surgical education

  • Background: Because of changing surgical procedures in the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, new methods for surgical education are needed and could include recent advances in digital technology. Many doctors have attempted to use digital technology as educational tools for surgical training, and movies have played an important role in these attempts. We have been using a 3D full high-definition (full-HD) camcorder to record movies of intraoral surgeries. Method: The subjects were medical students and doctors receiving surgical training who did not have actual surgical experience (n = 67). Participants watched an 8-min, 2D movie of orthognathic surgery and subsequently watched the 3D version. After watching the 3D movie, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire. Result: A lot of participants (84%) felt a 3D movie excellent or good and answered that the advantages of a 3D movie were their appearance of solidity or realism. Almost all participants (99%) answered that 3D movies were quite useful or useful for medical practice. Conclusions: Three-dimensional full-HD movies have the potential to improve the quality of medical education and clinical practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

  • This study has been developed to make a marketing tool for word-of-mouth marketing for "Low-Budget Movie". By developing an application program of Low-Budget Movie for 20millions of Smart-Phone user, it can find out the best environment of service, function, etc. Hereby, it could contribute the progress of Korean film industry with this marketing tool of Low-Budget movie.   • The purpose of this paper is to find a method to combine engineering education and the humanities by means of the movie genre. Although the science technology has developed and our living standard has improved, humanities has a tendency to be underestimated. Humanities has been treated as something antiquated, uninteresting or worn-out because it has no economic value or usefulness in itself. Engineering students need flexible, analytic and critical thought as well as the qualities in constructing key questions and trying to solve themselves. Communicative and understanding abilities are also required to them. Movies as a constructive visual device show problems with the reality. Especially, the science-related movie genre offers them an opportunity to think over why humanities matters as well as what matters in human being. The movies make engineering students think, discuss and argue on the humanity.

Design and Implementation of Collaborative Filtering Application System using Apache Mahout -Focusing on Movie Recommendation System-

  • It is not easy for the user to find the information that is appropriate for the user among the suddenly increasing information in recent years. One of the ways to help individuals make decisions in such a lot of information is the recommendation system. Although there are many recommendation methods for such recommendation systems, a representative method is collaborative filtering. In this paper, we design and implement the movie recommendation system on user-based collaborative filtering of apache mahout. In addition, Pearson correlation coefficient is used as a method of measuring the similarity between users. We evaluate Precision and Recall using the MovieLens 100k dataset for performance evaluation.
