A Survey on Students' Satisfaction of Korean Medicine Doctor's Student Health and Wellness Program (한의 교의 사업에 대한 학생 만족도 연구)

  • Objectives It is important to maintain health for students. The School Health Law is enacted in Korea to carry out the school health project like Korean Medicine Doctor's student Health and Wellness program. The purpose of this study was to examine the student's satisfaction of the program. Methods The school project was conducted in 19 schools in Seongnam city from May 2016 to December 2016. This school program was consisted of health counseling, necessary treatment, health related lectures, and vocational education about Korean medicine. A satisfaction questionnaire was conducted to gather information about overall satisfaction of the program and the program details such as health counseling, treatment, and health lectures. Results A total of 1,713 students and faculty members participated and 164 of those students completed the satisfaction survey. The overall mean score for the teaching activities was $8.54{\pm}1.76$, satisfaction of health counseling was $8.57{\pm}1.74$, treatment satisfaction was $8.39{\pm}1.83$, satisfaction with the health lectures was $8.23{\pm}1.96$ (range 3~10), and the need for continuity of the program was $8.43{\pm}1.91$ (range 1~10). One of the main benefit from the program was that students were able to get necessary treatment as soon as possible (51.2%). Conclusions We found that Korean medicine is suitable for the program. However, the large-scale prospective study will be needed for validation of the findings.

A Status of Student Sickness and Medical Care in University Health Service, Ewha Womans University (이화여자대학교 학생들의 의료실태에 관한 조사 연구)

  • A study was carried out in order to obtain the status of student sickness and medical care in University Health Service, Ewha Womans University. This study was based on the clinical records of University Health Service and hospitals 'for student insurance pay claims during the year of 1981. And the findings from the study were as follows; 1. A total number of student patients cared at University Health Service in 1981 was 9,822 and the incidence rate of primary cared was 773 per 1,000 students. 2. A total number of student patients cared at hospitals was 393 and the incidence rate of secondary cared was 31 per 1,000 students and 5 student out of 31 per 1000 was cared under the haspitalization. 3. The evacuation rate of student patients from University Health Service to hospital was 393 out of 9,822 student primary cared or 4.0 percent. 4. The order of 5 major diseases of primary cared in University Health Service was respiratory system diseases (36.6%), Digestive system diseases (17.4%), Skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases (16.0%), Symptoms and undetermined diagnosis (13.7%) and Nerve and sensory organ diseases (12.0%) respectively. 5. The disease order of student patients(333) cared in hospitals as out-patients was Skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases (40.3%), Nervous and Sensory organ disease (19.2%), Digestive system diseases (10.8%) respectively. 6. The disease order of student patients (60) cared in hospitals as in-patients was Digestive system diseases (35.0%), Respiratory system diseases (13.3%), Nerve and sensory organ diseases (10.0%), Infectious and parasitic diseases (10.0%), and Symptom and Undetermined diagonsis (10.0%) respectively. 7. The evacuation rate of student patients in University Health Service to hospital was varied according to disease groups; the lowest rate was the diseases evacuated to Internal Medicine Department 1.5% or 75 out of 5,072 patient primary cared and the highest rate was Neuropsychiatry department 63.7% or 7 out of 11 patients. 8. The monthly distribution of student patients in University Health Service was the highest in September (17.9%) and April (15.5%) each semester. 9. The monthly number of student patients treated in hospitals was the range 20 to 40 in out patients and 2 to 9 in in-patients. 10. The hospital ill days per case were $4.3{\pm}5.0$ days in out-patients and $9.7{\pm}9.5$ days in in-patients.

A Research for Recognitions of Korean Medical Student toward Traditional Korean Medicine and Education (한의학 및 한의학교육에 대한 한의대생들의 인식 조사)

  • Objectives : There is a correlation between student's satisfaction of education and their occupation satisfaction. Therefore, Korean medical school students' satisfaction toward their education is important for their medical ability in Traditional Korean Medicine(TKM). The purpose of this study is to investigate TKM school students' satisfaction of education and their perceptions of TKM level. Methods : The questionnaire used in this study is consisted of questions about students' satisfaction and their perception toward issues about TKM. 168 cases were collected, and I analyzed 164 cases. Results : 43.9% of students think that the ratio of western medical courses to TKM courses in TKM school's curriculum is 'Proper'. 54.3% of students do not satisfy their curriculum. But, 51.2% of students would recommend high school students for entrance to TKM school. 77.9% of students think 'TKM doctor should use modern medical device'. 92.7% and 61.9% of students think 'Needed' toward 'Cooperation of western medicine and Korean medicine', and 'Medical unification' each. There are correlations ; (1)'recognition toward ratio of curriculum', (2)'satisfaction of curriculum', (3)'degree of recommendation to enter the TKM School', (4)'relation between TKM and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) or Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM)'. Conclusions : Student's satisfaction of education is not quite high than satisfaction of TKM study itself. Most of respondents agreed usage of medical devices. The more they thought that they had curriculum for western medicine, the lesser they thought that medical unification was ont needed. Further studies are needed to assess satisfactions of students for their education with more accuracy results.

Domestic Research of Medical Students Trends Analysis (의과대학생에 관한 국내 연구동향 분석)

  • This study explored medical students' major research topics and research methods by analyzing 184 academic articles pertaining to the characteristics of medical students from 2007 to 2017. Results showed many papers dealing with medical students' emotional and cognitive aspects, student counseling, clinical practice education, and curriculum management. According to the medical education accreditation board, research trends were found mostly in the student and curriculum areas of learner characteristics, medical humanities, student counseling, clinical practice education, and curriculum management. Common research topics have been steadily increasing since the introduction of the evaluation accreditation standard in 2012. Medical students predominantly used quantitative research methods for the studies. In the future, it is necessary to ensure that research topics such as CQI, digital- and performance-based clinical practice, and convergent curriculum within the Fourth Industrial Revolution are being studied. In addition, it is crucial to investigate learners' unique, dynamic, and qualitative characteristics through qualitative and mixed methods.

Current and Future Challenges of Student Assessment in Medical Education from an Outcome-based Education Perspective (성과중심교육 측면에서 우리나라 의과대학 학생평가의 현실과 과제)

  • Most medical colleges in Korea have been shifting from traditional education to outcome-based education, which is the general trend in medical education. The purpose of this study was to make some suggestions in light of the reality and challenges of student assessment in medical education from the perspective of outcome- based education. First, those who are responsible for student assessment should be diversified to include faculty, residents, students, and evaluation committee members. They need separate roles in educational evaluation, so evaluation competencies are required for them. Second, various methods for evaluation and score interpretation can be used for effective evaluation. We can adopt diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation functionally, and the norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, growth-referenced, and ability-referenced evaluation based on criteria for score interpretation. Finally, various evaluation domains and test forms can be administered together in the common lectures in the medical school. We can test not only knowledge but also skills and attitudes, with diverse test forms such as supply and performance types.

The Association between Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome and Nutritional Status on university student medical examination in Sungnam Metropolitan City (성남지역 대학생 건강검진에서 대사증후군의 유병율 및 영양상태의 관련성 연구)

  • Objectives: Some papers have raised a lot of concerns about relation among the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, serum ferritin and metabolic syndrome. Accordingly, we researched relation between the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and iron state. Methods: A group of 1304 test subjects were gathered in university student medical examination in Sungnam metropolitan city. BIA for body position, body size and blood test were estimated. Results & conclusions: The study represents an adult population of young people in their twenties. Therefore there is so little level for prevalence of metabolic syndrome than have ever known things. And actually, metabolic syndrome was closely connected with so high iron state.

A Survey on Clinical Practice Students' Perception of Clinical Performance Examination in a College of Korean Medicine Using the Actor Standardized Patient and Student Standardized Patient (연극인표준화환자와 학생표준화환자를 사용한 일개 한의과대학 진료수행시험(CPX)에 대한 임상실습 학생 인식 조사)

  • Objectives : This study compares clinical practice students' perception of Clinical Performance Examination (CPX) in a College of Korean Medicine using actors as Actor Standardized Patient (ASP) and enrolled students as Student Standardized Patient (SSP). Methods : Targeting the clinical practice students who completed the clinical practice education in the first semester of the fourth year in the Department of Korean Medicine, a survey was conducted on total six categories such as satisfaction with CPX using ASP and SSP, prior knowledge about clinical practice education, self-evaluation, difficulties in the process of performing the CPX, satisfaction with ASP/SSP, and familiarity with them. Results : In the results of the survey, the mean score of CPX program using SSP was higher than that of CPX program using ASP in every area. Among them, in the satisfaction with CPX itself and prior knowledge about various clinical practice education, the mean score of CPX program using SSP was statistically significantly higher than that of CPX program using ASP. Conclusions : Overall, the clinical practice students' satisfaction with CPX program using SSP was higher than that of CPX using ASP, and statistically significantly higher in some areas.

Establishment of Cohorts to Evaluate the Performance of Students and Graduates at a Medical School (의과대학 학생과 졸업생 수행능력 평가를 위한 코호트 구축 설계)

  • Evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs involves measuring learning processes as well as outcomes. It is essential to study cohorts of students and graduates to evaluate the long-term effects of educational programs with data generated both during education and after graduation. The purpose of this study was to establish cohorts of students and graduates to evaluate their performance, thereby providing a basis for evaluating the social accountability of medical education. In this study, student and graduate cohorts were built for both students currently enrolled and graduates at Inje University College of Medicine (IUCM). A model involving the process of cohort establishment and an evaluation indicator framework was developed. In the process of cohort establishment, the following steps were conducted: defining the goals and objectives of the student and graduate cohorts, organizing a cohort committee, developing regulations, registering cohorts, acquiring consent, and building a database. A framework of evaluation indicators according to the graduate roles of IUCM was developed by adapting Kirkpatrick's evaluation model. Next, items to be collected in student and graduate cohorts were selected, and the current status of existing data was analyzed. Moreover, a preliminary analysis was conducted, including analyses of the evaluation indicators and graduates' performance. This study suggests that it is necessary to include additional evaluation indicators considering students' learning environment and well-being in student cohorts and to develop strategies or methods for graduates to continue participating in data collection for a long-term study.
