  • Today, knowledge itself has become a resource which must be protected by the pertinent community of its contributors and users, from being manipulated or distorted by third-party players. The preservation of knowledge in relationship to the cultural context of its origins, has been recognized by international organizations intent on maintaining authentic voice and perspective. Globally, the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) organizes the annual IGC (Intergovernmental Committee) meeting to address various issues associated with each country's utilization of intellectual and bio source property. Korean Medicine is the official name for the traditional medicine that has been inherited from the cultures of the Korean Peninsula. It is one of the four practices of East Asian Medicine including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from China, Kampo Medicine of Japan, and Sino-Vietnamese Medicine in Vietnam. As a cultural treasure representing centuries of evolving knowledge, Korean Medicine is protected under intellectual property rights afforded by WIPO, and must be understood in relationship to, and distinct from, TCM. It is understood that China has a strong political purpose to claim all the traditional medicines of the East Asian region under the name of TCM, including Korean Medicine. In fact TCM was authorized as the representative name for all East Asian medicine by decisions made by the ISO (International Standard Organization) in 2015. This paper proposes a pilot study on how to protect the intellectual property of Korean Medicine from efforts by China to claim it under the umbrella of TCM. Using the Uibang Yuchui (醫方類聚, Classified Collection of Medical Formulas) this paper suggests establishing a Database of UBYC, which was published in 1477 by the Joseon Korea government. UBYC was the reorganized version of contemporary East Asian medical sources, and has already hundreds of year's rich indigenous and culturally specific medical history of Korea, from which Korean Medicine has been built.

  • Objectives The purpose of this review is to analyze the trends of Korean medicine treatment for trigger finger. Methods Clinical papers using Korean medicine to treat trigger finger were searched in five online databases-Koreanstudies Information Service System, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, ScienceON, Research Information Sharing Service, and PubMed. Nine studies were selected, and we analyzed their characteristics according to the author, year, number/gender/age of patients, duration of disease, duration of treatment, intervention method, measurement methods, and results. Results Seven case report studies, one prospective observational study, and one randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were selected in online databases, and there were no review studies. The most frequently used therapies were pharmacopuncture and acupuncture treatment. visual analogue scale, Quinnell's classification of triggering, was frequently used for measurement methods. All nine studies had therapeutic effects. Conclusions We reviewed studies of Korean medicine treatments for trigger finger, in this study. However, there are limitations that seven of the nine selected papers were case papers, and the number of papers was small. This paper suggests that a higher level of research and more studies on Korean medicine treatments of trigger finger need to be conducted.

  • Objectives The prognosis, recurrence rate and treatment of febrile seizure were studied through the research of recent western medicine and Chinese oriental medicine paper. Methods Recent western medicine paper of internal and external and chinese oriental medicine paper from 1999 to 2007 were investigated. Results and Conclusions The prognosis of febrile seizure was good in most cases, but children with febrile seizure who developed epilepsy range between 2 and 10%. The risk factors developed epilepsy including complex febrile seizure, focal and prolonged seizure, pre-existing neurodevelopmental abnormalities and recurrent febrile seizure. Recurrence rate of febrile seizure ranges between 30 and 50% was high. The risk factors can be predicted by their age at first febrile seizure happened, family medical history of febrile seizure and epilepsy, complex febrile seizure, and neurodevelopmental abnormalities. However, the most important factor of those is the age when they have first febrile seizure. Diazepam or Lorazepam was administrated for a child with prolonged seizure but only Diazepam was used for reducing recurrence of febrile seizurein febrile illness. However, there were some side effects such as lethargy, ataxia, and irritability. The study of chinese oriental medicine demonstrates that the acupuncture and venesection were used for seizure attack and reduced of recurrences and second attack. To reduce recurrence of febrile seizure, herbal medicine was also used for febrile illness or after seizure attack within a certain period of time, so reduce the recurrence, frequency of seizure and febrile illness. The most of herbs in prescription were used for removing heat and toxic meterials(淸熱解毒), extinguishing wind and to stopping the convulsion(熄風止痙)

The core of the identity of Oriental Medical Classics is relevant to being a help to other research fields through reinterpreting the Classics. And the most important issue of research are the analysis of thinking pattern In OM, and systematization of OM knowledge and information.

  • In this paper, we designed and implemented an integrated search and collaboration system. Users can search the traditional korean medicine knowledge in our system, which consists of medicinal materials, formulas, diseases, terminology, and clinical information. In general, the existing information systems providing the korean medicine knowledge do not provide the update function. Thus, it can be a problem if there are incomplete information. In order to solve this problem, our system implements the functions that users can work together to improve the knowledge. Therefore, wrong information can be updated easily so that flexible management about the korean medicine information is possible.

  • We in this paper propose a semantic search system using the basic ontology in Korean medicine field. The basic ontology provides a formalization of medicinal materials, formulas, and diseases of Korean medicine. Recently, many studies for the semantic search system have been proposed. However, they do not support the semantic search and reasoning in the domain of Korean medicine because they do not have the Korean medicine ontology. Our system provides the semantic search features of semantic keyword recommendation, associated information browsing, and ontology reasoning based on the basic ontology. In addition, they also have the features of ontology search of a form of table and graph, synonym search, and external Open API supports. The general search engines usually provide search results for the simple keyword, while our system can also provide the associated information with respect to search results by using ontology so that can recommend more exact results to users.

  • The purpose of this paper is to report the patient with lateral medullary syndrome due to occlusion of vertebral artery who was improved by oriental medical treatment. The patient was admitted on May 15, 2009 and remained until May 29, 2009. He was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping and physical therapy. After the treatment, the symptoms(vertigo, diplopia, gait ataxia, sensory loss numbness, Horner's syndrome, etc) improved. This result suggests that oriental medicine can be an effective treatment for a patient with lateral medullary syndrome due to occlusion of vertebral artery. But more clinical case reports are needed.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to report the evidence of difficulty, safety, and frequency of the use of Chuna Manual Therapy. Methods : The survey questions were developed using the consensus from a professor who majored in Rehabilitation Medicine of Korean Medicine (RMKM). November 26th to December 31st 2018, the questionnaire was given to education training members of the Korean Society of Chuna Manual Medicine for Spine & Nerves by paper. Twenty-nine(23%) of the questionnaires were retrieved. Difficulty, safety, and frequency of the use of Chuna Manual Therapy were reported based on the questionnaire. Results : In this study, the more difficult techniques were observed to be less safe. In particular, the adjustment techniques applied to the cervical and lumbar spine was answered with high difficulty. Although these techniques are high difficulty and low safety, the reason for its versatility also suggests that the technique has a high therapeutic effect and necessity. Conclusions : This is the first consensus on experts'opinions on Chuna Manual Therapy for education. We hope that this report is helpful for Korean medicine doctors who operate technique and expected to make clinical evidence of Chuna Manual Therapy.
