  • This study examined the current practices of Research Data Management (RDM) services recently built and implemented at research university libraries in the U.S. by analyzing the components of the services and the contents presented in their web sites. The study then analyzed the content of web pages describing the services provided by 31 Research Universities/Very High research activity determined based on the Carnegie Classification. The analysis was based on 9 components of the services suggested by previous studies, including (1) DMP support; (2) File organization; (3) Data description; (4) Data storage; (5) Data sharing and access; (6) Data preservation; (7) Data citation; (8) Data management training; (9) Intellectual property of data. As a result, the vast majority of the universities offered the service of DMP support. More than half of the universities provided the services for describing and preserving data, as well as data management training. Specifically, RDM services focused on offering the guidance to disciplinary metadata and repositories of relevance, or training via individual consulting services. More research and discussion is necessary to better understand an intra- or inter-institutional collaboration for implementing the services and knowledge and competency of librarians in charge of the services.

And studies on data collection method, obligations and range of service, etc. of urban construction archives center were conducted as well. Urban construction archive management business was aggressively pursued in terms of national policy, based on the state plan to construct medium-sized and large cities and Mao ZeDong(毛澤東)‘s direction regarding of urban construction archives. As a result, there happened to be various levels and types of 3,186 archive centers, as of 2003. And the archives centers of urban construction have been estavlished in 662 cities all over China so far, while the establishment of the urban construction archives centers was pursued only in 42 cities in 1960s. Another point to note is that staff members of junior college or higher educational background account for 70% - 80% of overall human resources of the archives center of urban construction, while 60 - 70% of them are technical level. This makes professional human resources represent at least 60% of the total human resources of the centers. This is a result of effort of China to enhance urban construction archive management business on both quantitative and qualitative level. And through the study on the situation of urban construction archive management business in Beijing(北京), it was learned that urban construction archives are being collected and managed in archives centers of the respective areas as well as in professional archives centers of urban construction. Some suggestions were also made regarding what kind of direction Korea should take to pursue the business of urban construction archive management.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare motivations for self-archiving across disciplines on an academic social networking site. We carried out an online survey with ResearchGate(RG) users, testing 18 motivational factors that we developed from a previous study (enjoyment, personal/professional gain, reputation, learning, self-efficacy, altruism, reciprocity, trust, community interest, social engagement, publicity, accessibility, self-archiving culture, influence of external actors, credibility, system stability, copyright concerns, additional time, and effort). We adapted Biglan's classification system of academic disciplines and compared motivations across different categories of discipline. First, we compared motivations across the four combined categories by the two dimensions - hard-pure, hard-applied, soft-pure, and soft-applied. We also performed a motivation comparison across each dimension between soft and hard disciplines and between pure and applied disciplines. We examined investigated statistical differences in motivations by demographic characteristics and RG usage of participants across categories as well. Findings showed that there were differences of motivations, such as enjoyment, accessibility, influence of external actors and additional time and effort, and personal/professional gains, for self-archiving across disciplines. For example, RG users in the hard-applied were more highly motivated by enjoyment than others; RG users in the soft-pure were more highly motivated by personal/professional gains than others. It is expected that findings could be used to develop strategies encouraging researchers in various disciplines contributing to share their data and publications in ASNSs.

The analysis utilized Korea Education and Research Information Service provided disposal information from 2010 to 2019. The academic libraries with more than 2 million books had disposed of the most number of books. This trend led to a distinctive decrease in the books' duplicate copies in terms of the collection composition. The librarians from the organizations, which conducted disposal more than three times and one massive removal within ten years, revealed in the interviews that they discarded many valuable duplicate books. They discussed the importance of digitizing high-value resources and also the limitation imposed by the copyright law. In conclusion, this study pointed out that book disposal can cause changes in the collection composition in the long run and suggested that academic libraries pay attention to these changes. The study also suggested evaluating the discarded books' values to guide the digitization efforts and count the number of books to include digital book use rights.

  • A webzine issued by a public institution not only plays a role in communication between members of the institution and its users, but is itself a meaningful record. In addition, as one of the management techniques of the archives, there is a growing awareness that active marketing is needed to promote the service and allow potential users to visit the archives. Therefore, efforts should be made to increase user satisfaction by identifying user needs, composing content reflecting them, and selecting user-centered interfaces appropriately. The purpose of this study is to design 'On-Gi', a newsletter of the Presidential Archives, as a user-participating smart platform in a smart device environment. As a research method, we first looked at the current status of webzine publication by relevant domestic institutions. Next, we compared and analyzed the issue of 'On-Gi' provided by the Presidential Archives and major contents. Based on this, a design model of the webzine for the marketing of the Presidential Archives was proposed. This can be used as a key marketing strategy for the Presidential Archives in the new user environment of technological innovation of smart devices.
