  • The study analyzed bibliometric data of papers published in Korea Citation Index (KCI) and Web of Science (WoS) journals from 2002 to 2021. After examining size differences of KCI and WoS domains in the number of authors, institutions, and journals to put publication and citations counts in perspective, the study investigated co-authorship patterns over time to compare collaboration trends of Korean and international scholars and analyzed the data at author, institution, and journal levels to explore how the influences of authors, institutions, and journals on research output differ across domains. The study also conducted frequency-based analysis of keywords to identify key topics and visualized keyword clusters to examine topic trends. The result showed Korean LIS authors to be twice as productive as international authors but much less impactful and Korean institutions to be at comparable levels of productivity and impact in contrast to much of productivity and impact concentrated in top international institutions. Citations to journals exhibited initially increasing pattern followed by a decreasing trend though WoS journals showed far more variance than KCI journals. Co-authorship trends were much more pronounced among international publication, where larger collaboration groups suggested multi-disciplinary and complex nature of international LIS research. Keyword analysis found continuing diversification of topics in international research compared to relatively static topic trend in Korea. Keyword visualization showed WoS keyword clusters to be much denser and diverse than KCI clusters. In addition, key keyword clusters of WoS were quite different from each other unlike KCI clusters which were similar.

  • This paper proposes a continuing educational program for librarian, as to reinforce the professionalism. It researches the previous educational attainments of undergraduates who studied library science. Then it analyses the current continuing programs of the National Library of Korea and librarians' demands for the program. The research also compares ALA and SLA as foreign cases of continuing programs, and their trends observed from the newly opened sessions. This paper, therefore, reports a series of educational contents in library science by their subjects. The proposed curriculum includes subjects including electronic publishing and copyrights, Future of Library, Taxonomy and controlled vocabulary, Patent Information. Science Information Literacy, Open Access Program, The Value of Library, Licensed Issues, Customer Service program etc.

  • The library space has historically been influenced by the change of its information and social environment. This paper describes the effect of ubiquitous environment on the library's space, by literature review, case analysis. and focus-group interview of 5 undergraduate students. The results show that the library's physical place is still important for users, and suggest the library information space design and management need to reflect the open-ness and the interactive-ness of the ubiquitous space.

  • The purpose of the study is to review research trends of information literacy instruction by analyzing 118 journal articles published in the library and information science field in Korea. The study first categorized the literature by year, journal title, type of library, type of researcher, and topic. Then, it analyzed the contents of the literature by 8 sub-topics. The study found that in terms of types of libraries, school libraries were the most frequently studied, and in terms of topics, program development. Research about public libraries was scarce. Based on the findings, the study proposed future directions of research in the information literacy instruction area.

  • This study aims at reviewing and analyzing the characteristics of library and information science in Korea by examming the research papers in two representative journals. In Korea, related scholarly associations have began about twenty years ago and produced a lot of research papers. For this work, I have established two aspects of knowledge system - cognitive object and subject. In this regards, the cognitive object menas the contents of research papers and the cognitive subject means the research methodology. In my opinion, this study obtains some characteristics of library and information science in Korea as follows: 1. There have been many research fields, but most of them have finished with just one or two results and not researched. 2. The adaption of information science to library science was hasty and had not the good effects in scholastic development. 3. Most research papers have been influenced by methodological prejudices. 4. In settling the native principles for the Korean phenomenon, there have been many problems. To solve these problems, I suggest that the existing research attitudes be converted to new one. I call this new research attitude 'everyday life centered research method'. Using this method, we can find the true basics and principles of library and information science in Korea.

  • This study investigated the intellectual structure of Korean library and information science and its change in the 1990s using author co-citation analysis. The citation data came from in 3 journals in the field of library and information science from 1990 through 1999, and 50 authors were selected and analyzed in detail by means of multi-variate statistical techniques such as multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis, factor analysis and crosstab analysis in order to excess the intellectual structure of discipline and its changing research patterns.

  • This study is on the history of classification in Western library from ancient to Harris(1870), before Dewey. It looks into the classification systems of librarians, bibliographers, booksellers and libraries of that time. One of the earliest was the classification of the clay tablets in the Assyrian library of Assurbanipal. But the earliest recorded system in the papyrus is that which Callimachus(B.C. 310-240) devised for the library at Alexandria. In the medival, the monastry libraries used many classifications. but their libraries were very small. Gesner, Naude, Brunet, Jefferson, Edwards, Harris etc. tried to make a good classification for bibliographies and libraries. Especially Brunet made the scheme based on the French system, and it used on bibliographical classification and shelf classification in the many libraries. In 1859, Edwards made the classification scheme for the public library in the Great Britain. In 1870, Harris made the famous inverted Baconian classification and it strongly influenced the Dewey Decimal Classification.

  • This study statistically examined the factors (individual factors, family factors, high school factors, college factors, and social factors) that affect the choice of the major by surveying with students who have entered the library and information science departments of colleges in Korea. The results were as follows. First, it was confirmed that individual factors and social factors had significant effects on the choice of the library and information science major in college. Second, it was found that individual factors had a greater influence on the choice of the library and information science major than social factors do. Third, individual factors had significant positive(+) effects on the choice of the library and information science major at colleges, whereas it was verified that social factors had significant negative(-) effects on the choice of the library and information science major at colleges. The findings of this study can be used as useful basic data for library and information science departments of colleges in Korea to prepare for a decrease in the number of college entrants in the coming years.
