Histological Structure of the Barbels of Liobagrus andersoni and L. obesus (Amblycipitidae: Pices) from Korea (한국산 퉁가리과 (Amblycipitidge) 어류 2종 수염의 조직 학적 구조)

  • Histological observations of the barbels of torrent catfish (Amblycipitidae) in Korea are reported. The bullhead torrent catfish (Liobagrus andersoni) and Korean torrent catfish (L. obesus) have eight obvious barbels in two pairs each on the maxilla and mandible. Each barbel is composed of an epidermis, dermis, and central cartilagerod. The epidermis of the maxillary and mandibular barbels of the bullhead torrent catfish is thicker than that of the Korean torrent catfish (P<0.05) and is formed of stratified epithelium that contains many cutaneous taste buds and a few small club cells. There are many taste buds on the upper part of each barbel. The dermis consists of loose connective tissue fibers that enclose blood vessels and bundles of nerve fibers. The barbels of these fish can be categorized into stiff and flexible types and are accessory, feeding, and sensory structures. Our results validate the barbels as gustatory receptor organs for these fishes.

Analysis of Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) and Sexual Dimorphism of Coreoleuciscus splendidus in Age Groups (연령에 따른 쉬리 Coreoleuciscus splendidus의 성적이형과 생식소 숙도 분석)

  • Age estimation and sexual dimorphism of Coreoleuciscus splendidus were estimated using otolith, length-frequency distribution and 23 morphological measurements, from 245 individuals collected from September 2016, February and April 2017 in the Gapyeong stream, Han River, Korea. Result of age estimation of C. splendidus, we most examined were 2, 3 and 4-age, and the maximum observed ages were 5-age. Nine out of twenty-three morphometric measurements were significantly different between the genders. Anal fin have showing major sexual dimorphism in particular between adult individuals. This sexual dimorphism was based on extension of anal fin soft rays of male individuals. Therefore anal fin of males is always longer and wider than females. During spawning season male individuals possess nuptial tubercles on anal fin rays. However, another measurements and morphological characters does not exhibit sexual dimorphism in the between male and female individuals. The sexual dimorphism was observed to only over 2-years old individuals with sexual maturity. But juvenile and 1-years old individuals do not have sexual dimorphism with sexual maturity. Peak season of spawning was April to May and they start first spawning at 2-age. The ages at major spawning groups were most 3-age, and they maximum GSI index was 14.91 (female), 8.96 (male) at 5-age, respectively.

Fish Farm Monitoring and Growth Performances of Chinese Muddy Loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) under Indoor or Outdoor Aquaculture Conditions, Korea (실내외 양식환경에 따른 미꾸라지(Misgurnus mizolepis) 양식장 모니터링과 성장특성)

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate fish farm and growth performances of Chinese muddy loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) under indoor and outdoor aquaculture conditions for the domestic loach aquaculture industry. The investigation was conducted from August 2017 to October 2019 at one indoor farm (D-site) and two outdoor farms (P1-site and P2-site). Results showed that WG (weight gain), DWG (daily weight gain), and SWG (specific weight gain) based on growth measurements were 175.27±36.2%, 7.98±3.3%, and 0.94±0.2% at D-site, 320±34%, 4.07±0.6%, and 0.55±0.1% at P1-site, and 295.9±53%, 4.15±0.5%, and 0.62±0.1% at P2-site, respectively. WG was higher in outdoor farms (P1-site and P2-site), while DWG and SWG were higher in the indoor farm (D-site). Such differences of the present study might be due to differences in growth, water quality, plant and sale frequency depending on aquaculture types. In particular, outdoor farms takes more than a year to have sales whereas indoor farms can have sales three times in a year.

Biochemical Characteristics of Three Migratory Populations of Chum Salmon, Oncorhynchus keta, Spawning in Korea (산란을 위해 회유한 한국 연어(Oncorhynchus keta) 지역개체군의 생화학적 특성)

  • Nine biochemical characteristics of female Oncorhynchus keta subpopulations that migrate to three streams (Namdaechun, Myeongpachun, Oshipchun) in Gangwon, Korea, were evaluated during November 2006: aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, triglyceride, cholesterol, glucose, hemoglobin, and urea in the blood and RNA/DNA in muscle. The three subpopulations were identical morphologically, but differed in their biochemical characteristics. The RNA/DNA ratio could be useful for distinguishing the subpopulations. RNA/DNA ratios of the Namdaechun and the Myeongpachun and Oshipchun subpopulations were $3.52{\pm}0.7$ and $2.9{\pm}0.7$ and $2.4{\pm}0.8$, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). By contrast, the blood parameters were somewhat ambiguous.

Antioxidant and Cholinesterase Inhibitory Activities of Aqueous Extract from Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

  • We investigated the antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibitory activities of the aqueous extract of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. The antioxidant activity of O. mykiss aqueous extract was determined by in vitro peroxynitrite scavenging activity and reducing power assays. The aqueous extract of O. mykiss showed potent peroxynitrite radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}=0.12{\pm}0.001\;mg/mL$) and reducing power (absorbance=$0.47{\pm}0.001$) at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. The in vitro cholinesterase inhibitory activity of O. mykiss aqueous extract was examined using spectrophotometric analyses of acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase. The aqueous extract of O. mykiss showed acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity ($IC_{50}=1.61{\pm}0.13\;mg/mL$), but did not exhibit inhibitory activity against butyrylcholinesterase. These results suggest that O. mykiss possesses antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities and provide scientific evidence for the health benefits of O. mykiss aqueous extract.

Reproduction Study of Korean Endemic Species Acheilognathus koreensis (고유종 칼납자루의 재생산 기초 연구)

  • In this study we described reproduction study of Korean endemic species, Acheilognathus koreensis and three other acheilognathinae species A. signifer, Rhodeus pseudosericeus, and R. uyekii. Morphology of egg shape and larvae just hatched is unique by the species respectively. There is no interrelation factor between size of female and number of spawned eggs per one time. Minium water temperature for spawning of A. koreensis was observed in $13.0^{\circ}C$ having low hatching rate with 43.5 percent. The egg of A. koreensis began to hatch approximately 79 hours after insemination. As higher as water temperature until $22.0^{\circ}C$ hatching elapsed time for developing eggs of A. koreensis and three species in this study was shortened. A. koreensis was grew up to be a adult enough which can be join to new production for three hundred days after hatching with 52.4 mm in total length. This reproduction study will be applied to preservation of Korean endemic fresh water fishes basically.

Community Structure of Fish and Distribution Characteristics of Phoxinus phoxinus and Rhynchocypris kumgangensis in the Gihwacheon Stream of Namhangang River, Korea (남한강 지류 기화천의 어류 군집 구조 및 연준모치와 금강모치의 분포 특성)

  • This study was carried out from March to November, 2013 to investigate the fish community structure and distribution characteristics of Phoxinus phoxinus and Rhynchocypris kumgangensis appearing in Gihwacheon Stream, Pyeongchang. A total of 6 families and 19 species of fish emerged during the survey period. The dominant species were R. kumgangensis (Individuals 44.7%, Biomass 30.2%) and P. phoxinus (Individuals 27.7%, Biomass 15.9%). Endemic species were 10 species including Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpus, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Hemibarbus mylodon, Gobiobotia brevibarba, Microphysogobio longidorsalis, R. kumgangensis, Zacco koreanus, Korecobitis rotundicaudata, Iksookimis koreensis and Coreoperca herzi. Endogenous species were P. tenuicorpus, G. brevibarba and P. phoxinus. Hemibarbus mylodon was a natural monument. Oncherhynchus mykiss was exotic species and translocated species was Oncorhynchus masou masou. The dominant species, R. kumgangensis, appeared at all survey sites. Except for St.6, the b value was more than 3.0 and the slope of K value showed positive correlation. P. phoxinus appeared in St. 3~St. 6 and St. 3 and St. 4 only showed stable populations.

Sperm Cryopreservation of Korean Bullhead Pseudobagrus fulvidraco (동자개 Pseudobagrus fulvidraco 정자 동결보존)

  • This study aims to find out a suitable extender and cryoprotective agent (CPA) for cryopreservation and its optimum concentration in order to conduct planned artificial seed production of Korean bullhead Pseudobagrus fulvidraco and to preserve superior sperm. Experiments were designed to investigate the effects of the different combinations of three extenders (I: 300 mM glycose, II: Kurokura extender, III: Li extender), four cryoprotectants (dimethyl sulfoxide, ethylene glycol, methanol and glycerol) and four concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20%) on the cryopreservation of Korean bullhead sperm. Postthawed sperm survival rate and sperm activity index (SAI) were detected to evaluate the effects of sperm cryopreservation. The optimal combination of extender and CPA for cryopreservation of Korean bullhead sperm was extender III + 10 and 15% methanol, resulting in a survival rate and SAI of 66.9 ± 8.7, 67.3 ± 13.1% and 2.6 ± 0.4, 2.6 ± 0.5 respectively, which was higher than had been achieved with other extenders and CPAs.

Ichthyofauna and Fish Community Structure in Lake Chungju, Korea (충주호의 어류상과 어류군집)

  • The ichthyofauna and fish community structure were investigated at three areas in Lake Chungju from April to October 2004. During the surveyed period,32 two species belonging to 12 families were collected. Dominant species in number was hemibarbus labeo (relative abundance : 23.2%) and subdominant was Erythroculter erythropterus (12.1%). Siniperca scherzeri (9.2%), and Pseudogobio esocinus (8.6%) were also numerous. There were nine Korean endemic species belonging to six families including Acheilognathus yamatsutae. The number of fish species collected was 28 in Danyang, 17 in Jecheon, and 15 in Chungju. Highest dominant index calculated was 0.670 in Chungju, and highest diversity index calculated was 2.442 in the Danyang area. We need closer observation of population fluctuation of some species, including H. labeo, the dominant species by biomass in Lake Chungju.

Study of Freshwater Fish Fauna and Distribution of Introduced Species of Mankyeong River, Korea (만경강의 담수어류 및 외래어종의 분포)

  • During studies of the fish fauna and communities of Mankyeong River, which flows to the Yellow Sea, 14 families in 44 genera and 63 species of freshwater fishes were caught. Zacco platypus (27.7%) was the dominant species and Z. koreanus (11.3%) the subdominant species in this river. Twenty-three species of Korean endemic fishes appeared, and two of these, Pseudopungtungia nigra and Liobagrus obesus, represented endangered Korea species. Community structure of each branch stream was stable, showing appropriate dominant species: Z. koreanus in Jeonju Stream, Z. platypus in Kosan and Soyang Streams, and Carassius auratus in Mankyeong main stream. Three introduced species appeared: C. cuvieri, Micropterus salmoides, and Lepomis macrochirus. Among these introduced species, M. salmoides expanded its territory from midstream to downstream because of its strong carnivorous tendency and it favoring of lentic waters. This distribution of M. salmoides affected the number and distribution of small native freshwater fishes, especially those in the subfamily Acheilognathinae.
