Properties and Oxidation Stability of Fish Oil Capsules Manufactured with Calcium Alginate Gels (Calcium Alginate로 제조한 어유 캡슐의 성질 및 산화안정성)

  • Alginates are used to encapsulate various materials, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This study examined the properties and oxidation stability of fish oil capsules manufactured with calcium alginate gels. The fish oil capsules were manufactured by dropping sodium alginate solution and fish oil into a calcium chloride solution through nozzles. The membrane thickness, sphericity, rupture strength and deformation depth of the fish oil capsules were determined. The peroxide value of the fish oil was assayed to determine the oxidation stability of the capsules. The capsules measured approximately 3 mm with a membrane thickness of 90 μm independent of the amount of fish oil added. As the amount of fish oil encapsulated increased, the sphericity, rupture strength and deformation depth of the capsules decreased. The encapsulation efficiency increased until the amount of fish oil was 30%. The oxidation stability of fish oil in capsules was dependent on the type of nozzle, e.g., the oxidation stability of fish oil in capsules made using a double nozzle was greater than with a single nozzle. These results should lead to industrial application of fish oils including eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, as nutraceuticals.

Effects of Curcuma aromatica Extract and Orange Rind Mixed Liquor on the Quality of Cypselurus agoo agoo Roe Treated with Electrolyzed Water (강황 추출물, 오렌지피 및 전해수 처리가 날치(Cypselurus agoo agoo)알의 품질에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of Curcuma aromatica (CA) and orange rind on the quality and sensory score of flying fish $Cypselurus$ $agoo$ $agoo$ roe treated with electrolyzed water during frozen storage ($-18^{\circ}C$). The pH was decreased with increasing amounts of CA extract added to flying fish roe and during frozen storage. The flying fish roe treated with CA extract showed increased yellowness, as compared to flying fish roe with no CA extract added and untreated with electrolyzed water (untreated). The flying fish roe containing CA extract maintained greater hardness than did untreated flying fish roe. The volatile basic nitrogen and trimethylamine contents of treated flying fish roe were lower than those of untreated flying fish roe during frozen storage. The results of volatile organic compound tests showed that the contents of alcohol, acid and ketone compounds in flying fish roe treated with CA extract and orange rind were relatively decreased, but the limonene content of treated flying fish roe was increased compared to that of untreated flying fish roe. In sensory evaluation, flying fish roe containing 0.05 and 0.1% of CA were preferred over others. In conclusion, CA and orange rind increased the quality and sensory scores of flying fish roe treated with electrolyzed water.

Skin Pigmentation of 0-age and 1-age Red- and White-colored Fancy Carp Cyprinus carpio var. koi Fed Diets Containing Different Amounts of Paprika (사료 내 파프리카 함량에 따른 당년생 및 1년생 비단잉어(Cyprinus carpio var. koi) 홍백 표피의 체색 변화)

  • This study investigated the effect of dietary paprika on the skin coloration of red- and white-colored fancy carp Cyprinus carpio var. koi, in two age groups: 0-age ($7.4{\pm}0.1$ g/fish) and 1-age ($164{\pm}2.9$ g/fish). Three isonitrogenous diets were formulated to contain 0, 5, and 10% paprika (Con, P5 and P10, respectively). Three replicate groups of 0-age fish and two replicate groups of 1-age fish were fed one of the experimental diets for 9 weeks. Survival, weight gain, and feed efficiency were not significantly affected by the dietary paprika level (P>0.05) at both fish sizes. The dietary paprika level influenced the redness ($a^*$), lightness ($L^*$), and yellowness ($b^*$) of fish skin. The $L^*$ value of the skin of the fish fed the P5 and P10 diets tended to decrease with feeding period. The skin $a^*$ value of 0-age fish (small) fed the diets containing paprika increased significantly with feeding period and was higher than that of fish fed the control diet after 3 weeks (P<0.05). However, the $a^*$ value of 1-age fish (large) fed the diets containing paprika tended to increase slightly with feeding period. At the end of the experiment, the skin total carotenoid level was increased significantly in fish of both sizes fed the P5 and P10 diets compared to fish fed the control diet. Therefore, 5% paprika powder in the diet increases the skin redness of red- and white-colored fancy carp, especially in small fish.

Preliminary study on spatio-temporal variations of five giant and 17 large fish species around the Korean peninsula from 2011 to 2016

  • Although giant and large fish species are highly important as a keystone species in the marine ecosystem, there have been no or few studies on their spatio-temporal variations around the Korean peninsula. For this, we analyzed daily reports made by observers at 57 fishery landing sites in Korea over 6 years, from 2011 to 2016. In total, 153 fish species were re-identified based on photos and descriptions recorded by Korean observers, of which five species were classified as a giant fish over 5 m in maximum total length (MTL) and 17 species as a large fish from 3 m to 5 m MTL according to the data presented by Froese & Pauly (2021). Among the giant and large fish species, Mola mola was the most abundant species, with 75 individuals landed as by-catch. The second most abundant species was Isurus oxyrinchus (31), followed by Mobula mobular (23), Lamna ditropis (17), Masturus lanceolatus (16), Sphyrna zygaena (14), and Prionace glauca (12). As a result of cluster analysis based on the number of individuals of giant and large fish species by year and sea, six years were separated into two clusters (2011-2013 vs. 2014-2016), with high contribution of M. mola, I. oxyrinchus, and M. lanceolatus; and three seas were separated into two clusters (eastern + southern seas vs. western sea), with high contribution of M. lanceolatus, L. ditropis, and I. oxyrinchus. The largest number of M. mola accounted for 64% of the total in 2014 and 2016, and 71% in summer (June-August). It is assumed to have a correlation between seawater temperature fluctuation and the occurrence of giant and large fish species. Our study highlights importance of longterm monitoring of giant and large fish species, and can help to understand the life cycle such as natal or nursery migration of giant and large fish species around the Korean peninsula.

Recovery of Fish Community and Water Quality in Streams Where Fish Kills have Occurred (어류폐사의 발생 이후 하천에서 수질의 변화 및 어류상 회복)

  • The species composition of the fish community was studied in four streams where fish kills have previously occurred in recent years; Worun Stream, Seo Stream, Jangnam Stream, and the Anyang Stream. The number of fish species varied from 22 to 86% compared to the number of fish species pre-fish kill. The recovery of fish populations in the streams seems to be determined by water quality and the presence of artificial structures in the streams. The Jangnam Stream, where alkaline pH caused a fish kill, showed a high recovery of fish species due to improvements in water quality. Anyang Stream had a low number of species, possibly because dissolved oxygen concentrations were intermittently low. Artificial structures in streams had a negative impact the recovery of fish species, particularly for benthic fish species. It appears that fish populations can recover rapidly when water quality improves or the movement of fish community is unimpeded. However, water quality and artificial structures in many streams in Korea still present adverse conditions for fish survival, deterring the recovery of fish populations. To conserve fish populations in streams, habitat all owing unimpeded movement for fish and controls on pollutant inputs are needed.

Identification of Fish Species using Affine Transformation and Principal Component Analysis of Time-Frequency Images of Broadband Acoustic Echoes from Individual Live Fish (활어 개체어의 광대역 음향산란신호에 대한 시간-주파수 이미지의 어파인 변환과 주성분 분석을 이용한 어종식별)

  • Joint time-frequency images of the broadband echo signals of six fish species were obtained using the smoothed pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution in controlled environments. Affine transformation and principal component analysis were used to obtain eigenimages that provided species-specific acoustic features for each of the six fish species. The echo images of an unknown fish species, acquired in real time and in a fully automated fashion, were identified by finding the smallest Euclidean or Mahalanobis distance between each combination of weight matrices of the test image of the fish species to be identified and of the eigenimage classes of each of six fish species in the training set. The experimental results showed that the Mahalanobis classifier performed better than the Euclidean classifier in identifying both single- and mixed-species groups of all species assessed.

Optimal Design of Mooring Steel Pile for Submersible Fish Cage (부침식 가두리 계류용 말뚝의 최적설계)

  • To develop a new fish cage which is required for offshore or moving cage culturing system has been gradually increased against being closely dense of fish cage in shallow water. Though submersible fish cage culturing system is essential technology for converting from shallow water into the offshore, it was pointed out the serious problem about stability of which are sinking and floating state. This study is presented conceptual design of submersible fish cage centered with a mooring steel pile to acquire stability and faculty. Design of mooring steel pile for submersible fish cage culturing system needs to carry out optimal design of mooring steel pile for which much efforts are required. Formulation and optimal design process of submersible fish cage are organized into using Sequential Quadratic Programming method of numerical optimization. For submersible fish cage system centered with a mooring steel pile, process of the optimal design is proposed and the optimal solutions are obtained.

  • Recently, possibility of low protein diet with high energy level for improvement of fish production has been proposed in several fish species, especially under restricted feeding rate, fish responded better on high energy diet than low energy diet McGoogan and Gatlin (1999) stressed another benefit of low protein diet with high energy for fish production, in terms of reduction of nitrogen waste from fish metabolism However, others reported no effect of high lipid in feed on performance of fish (Jover et al. 1999). This was probably because that energy availability o requirement for fish varied based on fish species, protein content or quality in feed, rearing water temperature condition and feeding ration.   • Evaluations of the fish farm influences on stream water quality may provide basic informations on watershed management to reduce environmental impact due to fish farm development and to conserve stream water quality in forested watershed area. In this research influent, effluent water in the fish farm and stream water qualities around Mt. Baegun area were monitored seasonally for six years and the following results were obtained. Due to the increase of pH in effluent water from the fish farm it was believed that alkalization of stream water can be accelerated by large scale development of fish farms in the forested watershed area. Also, effluent water from the fish farm increase of EC higher than influent and stream water. As a result of regression analyses, pH, EC, DO, water temperature, total amount of cation and anion in influent and effluent water of fish farm show high significance.

  • Transporting of live fish requires subcontract with an independent contractor. During the transporting of live fish, civil liability problems can be caused by damage of fish. Before transporting of live fish, responsibility of negligence and tort liability were arisen, after transporting of live fish, default on an obligation was arisen. To avoid this problems, it is important to put a bond on each other and live fish transporting contract can be made a legal contract. Also, transporting of live fish must be made safe, after transporting, and discharge of obligation, perfect transaction is achieved.
