  • Identification and antibiotic susceptibility of Clostridium perfringens isolates from fecal specimens of healthy sheep and dogs were performed from December, 1995 to November, 1996 in Kwang-ju and Chonnam area. C. perfringens was isolated in 3 strains(15.0%) out of 20 healthy sheep and 2 strains(6.7%) out of 30 healthy dogs. In antibiotic susceptibility test of C. perfringens, 80% of the isolates was susceptible to ampicillin, baytril, and penicillin, 60% to cephalothin, and 40% to erythromycin.

  • This study was designed to evaluate a repeated intravenous toxicity of a novel cephalosporin antibiotic, IDC7181, in Beagle dogs. Four groups, each consisting of 3 male and 3 female dogs (one year old, body weight 8 - 10 kg), were intravenously administered with IDC7181 at dose levels of 0 (vehicle control), 10, 50 or 250 mg/kg/day, respectively, for 28 days.(omitted)

  • Hematologic values were determined in blood samples obtained from 203 normal, healthy Jindo dogs of both sexes that ranged in age from 3 months to 10 years. Age-related differences were detected for the total erythrocyte count, hemoglobin content, PCV and the number of eosinophils. The persistent eosinophilia appears to be due to the dirofilariasis and flea-allergy dermatitis.

  • Radiograph and serum activities were investigated in six dogs with experimental portal vein branch ligation. Operative mesenteric portography showed the incomplete portal vein circulation due to ligation of portal vein branch. Several serum enzyme activities were measured after portal vein branch ligation. Albumin and total protein were decreased following the time. Others were increased. In microscopic findings, hepatocellular necrosis and haemorrhage were identified in midzone and centrilobular zone. And reverse lobulation pattern was found in dogs with portal vein branch ligation.

  • Changes in the cardiovascular and bispectral index score were evaluated in dogs subjected to constant rate infusion (CRI) with alfaxalone. Fifteen dogs were assigned to three groups of 5. Groups and doses of alfaxalone were as follows: group 1, 3 mg/kg for induction and 6 mg/kg/h for CRI; group 2, 3 mg/kg for induction and 8 mg/kg/h for CRI; and group 3, 3 mg/kg for induction and 10 mg/kg/h for CRI. CRI was maintained for 1 h. Respiratory rates and blood pressures showed minimal changes; however, mild tachycardia and mild hypoxemia occurred, especially in group 3. There were some disparities between bispectral index score, electromyography and pedal withdrawal reflex test when measuring anesthetic depth. Additional premedications and/or analgesic agents would be helpful to avoid adverse effects of alfaxalone and provide improved cardiopulmonary functions.

  • The acute toxicity study of MBRI-98304, a new Hepatitis B virus (HBV) immunotherapeutic agent, was performed in Sprague-Dawley rats (7 weeks old) and Beagle dogs (4 months old). MBRI-98304 was injected intramuscularly at a single dosage of 0, 20, 100, 500, 2, 500, and 12, 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg in rats and 0, 200, 1, 000, and 5, 000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg in Beagle dogs for 2 weeks daily. • The present study was carried out to observe the histological changes of the parenchymal organs of the rats, rabbits and dogs intramuscularly injected with Rompun. The results observed are snmmarized as follows; The hematologic changes of the rabbits and dogs administered with Rompun were a pronounced decrease in erythrocytes and leucocytes. The percentage of lympocytes was decreased, while that of neutrophils was increased. There were severe hyperemia of spleen, hyperemia and extention of the central vein of the liver, centrilobular degeneration of liver, hyperemia and hemorrhage of the kidney, necrosis and hydropic degeneration of renal tubule, hyperemia of pulmonary alveolar septa and pulmonary edema. and in the cases injected with Rompun and histamine or pentothal sodium at the same time, the microscopical findings described above were more conspicuous than the cases injected with Rompun alone.

  • An acute enteric diseases accompanied with vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, pyrexia, dehydration and high mortality has occured in dogs throughout the country since June, 1981 in Korea. According to epidemiological and clinico-pathological studies on the total of 44 dogs admitted to the animal clinic in the college, the cases were tentatively diagnosed as a viral enteritis and the possibility of canine parvovirus as the etiological agent for the cases was discussed.
