Six dogs including 4 dogs living in different geographic locations of Kangwon province and 2 client-owned dogs were used to determine the periodicity of microfilariae of D. immitis using a trigonometric model. The calculated periodicity index was ranged from 25.6 to $95.5\%$ with mean of $57.6\%$, and the estimated hour of peak was approximately 21:00 hrs (range, 20:04-21:29 hrs) and minimum counts at 09:00 hrs (range, 08:04 - 09:29 hrs). Correlation coefficient between the observed and the expected count from the model varies depending on dogs, ranging from 6.4 to $49.2\%$. Based on this study, the periodicity of microfilariae of D. immitis was considered as nocturnally sub-periodic for all dogs employed. This result is in consistent with previous report in peak hour but different in minimal hour, indicating that further studies on the periodicity need to be performed to better understanding the dynamics of the periodicity and to help practitioners in the choice of the time for examination of the dogs.
The purpose of the study reported here was to test the hypotheses that clinically healthy dogs will not manifest immediate hypersensitivity responses to intradermal injection of Malassezia pachydermatis extracts but that affected dogs with Malassesia otitis will manifest such hypersensitivity. Wd desired to identify approximate molecular mass of any allergenic components of the yeast by use of sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The protein profile of Malassezia pachydermatis extracts showed between 16 and 110 kDa. Especially, the intensity was strongest between 25 and 80 kDa. Mean wheal diameters in the affected groups of 20, 2, 0.2, and $0.02{\mu}g/ml$ were $13.36{\pm}0.67,\;5.33{\pm}0.67,\;5.47{\pm}0.82,\;and\;5.07{\pm}0.64$, respectively. Mean wheal thickness in the affected groups of 20, 2, 0.2, and $0.02{\mu}g/ml$ was $6.44{\pm}0.40,\;3.86{\pm}0.35,\;2.64{\pm}0.36,\;and\;2.60{\pm}0.44$, respectively. The difference of wheal diameters and thickness between healthy and affected groups was significant (p<0.05). In conclusion, the observations confirm that Malassezia pachydermatis-derived antigens may induce an immediate wheal response when intradermal injected in dogs. It seems reasonable to suggest that hypersensitivity to yeast may contribute to the development of clinical signs in dogs with immediate skin test reactivity, especially in dogs with Malassezia otitis extema.
The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence of retinal diseases in dogs presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University from April 2004 to December 2005. Sixty-five dogs (120 eyes) with retinal diseases involving blindness were included in this study. Age, breed, and gender data for all breeds were collected from medical records documenting vision loss. Generalized progressive retinal atrophy (gPRA) was the most common manifestation. Other prevalent findings included sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) and retinal detachment (RD). Bilateral gPRA was found in 32 dogs with a female-to-male ratio of 1 : 1. The mean $age{\pm}SD$ of all dogs in this group was $4.66{\pm}2.30$ years with a range of 3 to 12 years. Breeds with highest prevalence of gPRA were Miniature Schnauzer (24/32, $mean{\pm}SD$ age: $3.79{\pm}0.78$ yr) and Poodle (2/32, $6.50{\pm}0.71$ yr). Twelve dogs (24 eyes) were diagnosed with SARD bilateraly, ranging from 3 to 13 years of age ($mean{\pm}SD:\;6.91{\pm}2.61$ yr). There were no abnormalities in fundus of 11 dogs at presentation. Electroretinography (ERG) without anesthesia was performed in 7 dogs, and all response was totally extinguished. Retinal detachment was identified in 21 dogs (32 eyes): 11 bilateral and 10 unilateral (7 right eye, 3 left eye). The most common breed was Shih Tzu (15/21, $mean{\pm}SD$ age: $4.39{\pm}3.24$ yr). Four other breeds comprised the remaining 6 cases (8 eyes). The everall mean age of the group was: $4.18{\pm}2.89$ years (range 0.8 to 14 years) with a female-to-male ratio of 1 : 1.1 (10 females, and 11 males).
The purpose of this study was to compare echocardiographic parameters of cloned beagle dogs with the previously reported reference range. Seven cloned dogs were assessed for anatomical features and cardiac function through left- and right-sided heart and right ventricle outflow tract from M-mode, 2D-mode, pulsed wave Doppler and tissue Doppler imaging. In all the cloned dogs, there were no abnormalities in anatomical structure and measurements were within the normal reference range. In addition, left- and right-sided myocardial function was within the normal reference range. Especially, pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure frequently encountered in cloned animals were not recognized in cloned dogs. In conclusion, no evidence of cardiovascular dysfunction in mature cloned dogs could be identified either at birth or the growing stage in this study. Therefore, serious adverse effects of somatic cell nuclear transfer technology including transgenesis on cardiac morphology and function were not found in cloned dogs.

This study was conducted to describe clinical presentation of pelvic fracture and compare clinical outcomes of each part of pelvic fractures in 54 client-owned dogs. There was an average of 3.61 pelvic fractures per dog and 47 dogs had more than two fractures. The average time until initial weight-bearing on the affected leg, hospitalization after surgery, and lameness score at final check in 31 dogs that underwent surgery were 7.04 days, 16.39 days, and 1.25, respectively, and there were no significant difference in the incidence of sacroiliac luxation, iliac fracture, and acetabular fracture among them. The length of hospitalization and the lameness score upon final check of the dogs with over two surgically repaired sites were significantly longer and higher than those of the dogs with one surgically repaired site (P = .043 and P = .008, respectively). Upon final check of the dogs with bilateral pelvic fracture that was surgically treated, the hospitalization and lameness score were significantly longer and higher than those of dogs with unilateral pelvic fracture that was surgically treated (P = .034 and P = .033), respectively. The number of pelvic fractures treated surgically appears to be a more influential factor influencing recovery from pelvic fractures than the location of the pelvic fractures.

This retrospective study reviewed the clinical and diagnostic features, therapeutic outcome and compilations of interventional ductal occlusion in 37 dogs with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Malteses and female dogs were over-presented. Bounding pulse and left basal continuous murmur were most common findings in physical examination, while the differential cyanosis was rarely observed. Left ventricular (LV) enlargement patterns and sinus tachycardia were common in the ECG. Typical radiographic findings included LV elongation and triple bumps indicating left atrial (LA), aortic and pulmonary dilation. Echocardiographic features were typical shunt flow at the ductus arteriosus and marked LV dilation with mild to moderate mitral regurgitation (MR). The 32 of 37 dogs were interventionally treated with either thromboemolic coils (TCE) or Amplatz canine ductal occluder (ACDO). Transient hemoglobinuria caused by incomplete closure was occurred in 2 dogs treated with TCE, although the hemoglobinuria was disappeared within a week of intervention. The dislodgement of occlusion device was occurred in 2 dogs with TCE and 1 dog with ACDO. However there were no significant complications associated with this dislodgement, since those were dislodged at the lower pulmonary vasculature. We also found that no serious complications and no further medical intervention in 29 dogs having long-term follow-ups.
Madecassoside, an active ingredient extracted from Centella asiatica, is used for treatment of various skin disorders in humans. However, the effect of madecassoside on the skin of dogs and cats has not been studied yet. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical efficacy of topical madecassoside cream in dogs and cats with skin diseases. A total of twenty-one dogs and ten cats with various skin diseases were included in the study. The 1% topical madecassoside cream was applied to the animal's skin lesion at least once a day for 7 days, and the skin condition was evaluated before the application of madecassoside cream (day 0) and 7 days after the application (day 7). The skin condition was scored by five clinical indices: canine atopic dermatitis extent and severity index-4 (CADESI-4), coat condition, pruritus, scale, and general condition. In dogs, all five clinical indices (CADESI-4, coat condition, pruritus, scale, and general condition) were significantly decreased on day 7 compared to those on day 0 (p < 0.0001, p < 0.05, p < 0.001, p < 0.01, and p < 0.05, respectively). In cats, the CADESI-4 and scale were significantly decreased on day 7 compared to those on day 0 (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05, respectively). No adverse effects were observed during the trial period in the dogs and cats included in this study. The results of this study demonstrate that the topical madecassoside cream is applicable to skin lesions in dogs and cats.
Nine dogs presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Konkuk University and Woosung Animal Hospital with a history of pelvic limb lameness. On physical examination, 9 dogs all showed a consistent weight bearing lameness and mild muscle atrophy. There was cranial drawer sign with pain in 9 dogs. Mediolateral radiographic projection revealed cranial subluxation of the tibial tuberosity in a tibial compression view. The right and left stifle joints were affected in 7 dogs and 2 dogs respectively. TightRope cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) technique for treatment of CCL deficiency was performed. Polyester and nylon were used to stabilize the stifle in 3 dogs and 6 dogs respectively. Suture sizes were 0.8 mm (n = 2), 0.9 mm (n = 4), 1.1 mm (n = 2), and $1.1mm{\times}2$ strands (n = 1) in diameter. Mean (${\pm}SD$) surgical duration was $48.3{\pm}8.5$ minutes (range 35 to 60 minutes). Preoperative and postoperative mean (${\pm}SD$) cranial drawer signs were $8.6{\pm}1.6$ mm (rage 7 to 12 mm) and $1.2{\pm}1.0$ mm (rage 0 to 3 mm) respectively. Immediate postoperative radiographs of the affected limb revealed no evidence of cranial subluxation of the tibial tuberosity in a tibial compression view of 9 dogs. Normal limb function was regained in 8 dogs within 8 weeks postoperatively. A consistent weight bearing lameness resolved in all dogs after TightRope CCL technique, but reoccurred in one dog (case No. 6) 2 weeks after surgery. Cranial subluxation of the tibial tuberosity was identified in a tibial compression test. During the second surgery, breakage of surgical button was identified and a tibial wedge osteotomy was performed. Based on surgical time, complication, stifle stability, and functional recovery, the present study indicated that TightRope CCL technique is effective treatment for the dogs with CCL deficiency.

The present study was made in order to clarify the anti-emetic effect by needle-acupuncture (AP), injection-AP and moxibustion in xylazine - induced vomiting of dogs. Twelve mongrel dogs (4 months to 5 year old, 2 to 4 kg of body weight), eleven mongrel dogs (4 months to 5 years old, 2 to 10 kg of body weight) and twelve mongrel dogs (4 months to 1 year old, 2 to 4 kg of body weight) were used for clarification of anti-emetic effect by needle-AP, injection-AP and moxibustion, respectively. The experimental animals were devided into control(6 heads), BL-21(6 heads), CV-12(6 heads) and BL-21+CV-12(6 heads) groups using total 6 dogs with vomiting selected in preliminary experiment, respectively in needle-AP treatment. In addition, the experimental dogs were divided into control (11 heads), BL-21 (6 heads) and CV-12(6 heads) groups using 11 dogs, respectively in injection-AP treatment. In moxibustion treatment the experimental dogs were divided into control (6 heads), BL-21(6 heads) and CV-12(6 heads) groups using 6 dogs, respectively. Five days after the experiment of one group was finished, the other group was examined in each experiment. Acupuncture needle was maintained for 20 minutes in needle-AP treatment. Metoclopramide was used in injection-AP treatment. Commercial moxa was used in moxibustion treatment. Vomiting was induced by intramuscular injection with $2{\%}$ xylazine 20 minutes after treatments of needle-AP, injection-AP and moxibustion, respectively. The vomiting rates of BL-21($33.3{\%}$), CV-12($50{\%}$) and BL-21+CV-12($33.3{\%}$) were lower than that of control($66.7{\%}$) and vomiting times of experimental groups were similar to that of control in needle-AP treatment. The vomiting rates of BL-21 ($0{\%}$) and CV-12($16.4{\%}$) were lower than that of control($66.7{\%}$) and the vomiting time of CV-12 group was similar to that of control group in injection-AP treatment. The vomiting rates of BL-21($33.3{\%}$) and CV-12($33.3{\%}$) were lower than that of control ($66.7{\%}$) and vomiting times of experimental group were similar to that of control group in moxibustion treatment. In conclusion, it was considered that needle-AP, metoclopramide injection-AP and moxibustion at BL-21 and CV-12 were effective for anti-emesis in xylazine induced vomiting of dogs and metoclopramide injection-AP was the most effective method for anti-emesis among them.
Canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) is a significant pathogen that causes respiratory diseases in dogs, collectively known as a canine infectious respiratory disease. The virus is highly contagious and exhibits high seroprevalence worldwide. Currently, bovine coronavirus (BCoV) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits are used to detect CRCoV antibodies. However, BCoV-ELISA kits cannot differentiate between infections caused by BCoV and those caused by CRCoV. In this study, we evaluated the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for CRCoV by comparing it with the virus neutralization (VN) test. Subsequently, we evaluated the seroprevalence of CRCoV in 383 dog serum samples collected from South Korea utilizing the HI test. The HI test for CRCoV showed a strong correlation with the VN test (R = 0.83, p < 0.001). The analysis of seroprevalence revealed that 52.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 47.2%-57.1%) of the Korean dog serum samples were positive. The seroprevalence exhibited varied with age, with a positivity rate of 43.9% in dogs under 1 year of age and 66.7% in dogs aged 3 to 5 years (odds ratio, 2.54; 95% CI, 1.43-4.59). In conclusion, the HI test to monitor CRCoV antibody proved to be closely related to the VN test. Furthermore, over half of the dogs in Korea tested positive for CRCoV antibodies. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the sero-epidemiology of CRCoV.
