Understanding of Teaching Strategies on Quadratic Functions in Chinese Mathematics Classrooms

  • What strategies are used to help students understand quadratic functions in mathematics classroom? In specific, how does Chinese teacher highlight a connection between algebraic representation and graphic representation? From October to November 2009, an experienced teacher classroom was observed. It was found that when students started learning a new type of quadratic function in lessons, the teacher used two different teaching strategies for their learning: (1) Eliciting students to plot the graphs of quadratic functions with pointwise approaches, and then construct the function image in their minds with global approaches; and (2) Presenting a specific mathematical problem, or introducing conception to elicit students to conjecture, and then encouraging them to verify it with appoint approaches.

Comparison of Factors Influencing Change Stages in Balanced Diet among Female University Students in Korea and China (한국과 중국 일부지역 여대생의 균형식 섭취 행동변화단계에 영향을 미치는 요인 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify differences in dietary behavior in Korean and Chinese female university students and investigate factors that influence dietary behavior. A total of 447 female university students in Korea and China were surveyed between June 27 and August 30, 2016. The data were analyzed using $x^2$ test, t-test, one way ANOVA, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Among Korean female university students, those who skipped breakfast were 26.18 times (95% CI: 5.421-126.407) more likely to be at a low-level stage for balanced diets than those who did not skip breakfast. In addition, compared to Korean female university students who did not eat late-night meals, those who ate late-night meals were 3.15 times (95% CI: 1.28-7.768) more likely to be at a low-level stage for balanced diets. Compared to Chinese female university students who did not skip breakfast, those who skipped breakfast were 4.22 times (95% CI: 1.865-9.551) more likely to be at a low-level stage for balanced diets. Compared to the Chinese female university students who did not stay up all night, those who stayed up all night were 5.25 times (95% CI: 1.712-16.074) to be in the preparation stage. The study results show that some factors that influence stage changes in balanced diets in Korean female university students were skipping breakfast and eating late-night meals. Therefore, it is recommended that solutions for improving the behavior of late-night meals and skipping breakfast, which are factors influencing stage changes in balanced diets should be strategically performed according to dietary behavior stages.

Relationships between lifestyle and clothing shopping orientation of Chinese female college students (중국 여대생의 라이프스타일과 의복 쇼핑성향과의 관계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between lifestyles and clothing shopping orientation. A questionnaire was developed to measure the lifestyle and shopping orientation of Chinese female college students. The questionnaire was distributed and collected from 217 college female students in China. The data was analyzed by mean, standard deviation, factor analysis, reliability test, MANOVA and ANOVA by SPSS package. The lifestyles of the respondents were classified into four types such as Open-mindedness, Accomplishment, Sociability, and Activities. And shopping orientation was classified into five types such as Recreational shopping, Speediness, Economic shopping, Shop and brand royalty, and Self-confidence. The result of this study were as follows; Consumers of open-minded lifestyle tended to economic and self-confident shopping. The higher accomplishment was, the higher speediness and economic shopping were. Consumers of sociable lifestyle tended to recreational, speediness, and self-confidence. The higher activities was, the higher economic shopping was. The shop and brand royalty was not shown to have the significant differences according to all of lifestyle groups. It is the factor that lifestyle were important in the clothing market segmentation of Chinese female college students

Perception and production of English fricatives by Chinese learners of English: Error patterns and perception-production relationship

  • This study examined the perception and production of eight English fricatives /f/, /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, and /ʒ/ by thirty Chinese English majors and thirty Chinese middle school students through a fricative identification test, an intelligibility test, and a goodness rating test and focused on error patterns and the perception-production relationship. The results showed that substitution errors occurred frequently in the perception and production of English fricatives by both the English majors and the middle school students. Further, the error patterns were attributed to various influencing factors such as the negative transfer from Chinese consonant inventory, hypercorrection or overcompensation mistakes, deficiency of L2 teaching, and acoustic similarities. Significant overall correlations were found between the fricative perception and production by the two subject groups but were not manifested in all the eight fricatives, indicating that Chinese learners' perceptual competence of target fricatives was not necessarily tied to their productive excellence of those sounds in all cases. Furthermore, precedences of perception over production were incompletely manifested in the eight fricatives, which suggested that perception might not always be a necessary prerequisite for production. Additionally, subject group and vowel context differences were observed. The English majors performed better than the middle school students, both perceptually and productively, and the subjects' performances in perception and production varied when vowel contexts changed.

Nutritional Intake, Body Mass Index and Depression Among Chinese College Students in an Urban Area of South Korea (일 지역 중국인 유학생의 영양소 섭취 상태, 체질량지수와 우울의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate nutritional intake, body mass index (BMI) and depression, and to elucidate depression in relation to nutritional intake and BMI among Chinese college students studying in South Korea. Methods: A descriptive study design was adopted. Data were collected from 170 Chinese college students in South Korea June-August, 2019. In this study, 24-hour dietary records were obtained and BMI was measured. Nutrient intakes were calculated from the dietary records using the CAN-PRO software. Depression was assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Results: Of 170 participants, 19 (11.2%) were underweight and 42 (24.7%) were overweight. Female, single, and non-smoking participants were underweight. There were 97 (57.1%) participants experiencing depression, and 99 (58.2%) consuming lower protein than the recommended nutrient intake resulting in insufficient nutrients. The intake of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, pantothenic acid, calcium, iron, and selenium was much lower than the standard. Depressive participants were significantly greater among the underweight participants and those consuming insufficient nutrients in terms of protein, pantothenic acid, and selenium. Conclusion: An intervention program is required to improve nutritional status, which should be a part of the strategies to manage depression for Chinese college students in South Korea.

Investigation of Dietary Behaviors According to Residence Status and Ethnicity of University Students in Yanbian, China (중국 연변지역 대학생들의 거주형태와 민족에 따른 식생활 연구)

  • This study was conducted to examine dietary behaviors according to residence status and ethnicity of university students in Yanbian, China. For the subjects, 334 university students (Male=141, Female=193) answered a questionnaire about perception of weight control, dietary patterns, health habits, residence status, and ethnicity. Perception of weight, meal frequency, favorite kind of food, meal finishing time, skipping breakfast, type of breakfast, snack frequency, late-night snack frequency, exercise frequency, regular life, and sleeping time were all significantly associated with residence status. Motivation of weight control, meal frequency, regularity of meal time, meal volume, favorite kind of food, exercise time, and regular life were all significantly associated with ethnicity. University students who lived with their parents perceived their weight more properly, exhibited a more positive dietary pattern, and lived a more regular life than those students who lived in a dormitory with their friends. Chinese students exhibited a more regular dietary pattern and lived a more regular life than the Korean-Chinese students. As a result, both environmental and inherent factors are related with the dietary behaviors of university students in Yanbian, China. These data could be used to help university students in Yanbian, China attain a healthy diet.

Adoption Process of Chinese Students to Korean Food Based on Residence periods (중국유학생의 거주기간에 따른 한국음식 확산)

  • This study conducted qualitative research through in-depth interviews on the diffusion process of Korean food in accordance with the length of residence of Chinese students in Korea. As the analysis method, the qualitative analysis method such as NVivo12.0 was used, and the analysis was performed through word frequency, word cloud, and coding matrix. The images of taste of Korean food were revealed as 'Spicy', 'Sweet', and 'Light taste' by both short-term Chinese residents and long-term Chinese residents. The long-term Chinese residents showed their dissatisfaction with the institutional food, and they also pointed out the importance of the matter of cooking for quick adaptation to life in Korea. The long-term Chinese residents also thought of Korean food as 'High-fiber food', and this was influenced by the 'Less-oil' cooking method of Korean food, which is different from the cooking method of Chinese food. The length of residence was used as a main variable of this study, and it was one of the factors having positive effects on the diffusion of Korean food and acculturation. It would be difficult to generalize the results because this study used the convenience sampling method and snowball sampling.

  • Previous research on university life of Chinese students studying in Korea has been conducted on students in Korea, but Chinese students have a sense of belonging and university prejudice against Korean universities, so the objectivity of research is not clear. This paper conducted a survey of the Chinese people in China and conducted a media search for attracting foreign students. Not all foreign students are proficient in Korean language. Even students who have completed more than one year of education in the Korean language institutes or passed advanced level of Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK) have difficulties in everyday life and acquiring a degree. According to the results of this study, until foreign students who lack sufficient Korean language skills are able to adapt to culture and acquire information in Korea, it is desirable to prepare multilingual content services so that they can obtain academic information or daily information necessary for studying in their native language.

Sexual Attitude and Sexual Behavior of the Chinese-Korean University Students (중국 조선족 대학생의 성 태도 및 성 행동에 관한 연구 - 연변 1개 대학을 중심으로 -)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore sexual attitude, sexual behavior and the related factors in chinese-Korean university students. Method: A self-administered questionnaire with cross-sectional design was used. Participants were 271 Chinese undergraduate students in one university in Jilin, China. Correlation coefficiency and t-test were used to find the relationships and to compare sexual attitude and sexual behavior and related factors. Result: Although sexual attitude of participants was moderate, they were more likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. The strong relationship between sexual attitude and sexual behavior suggested that those who have a permissive sexual attitude were more likely to have engaged in sexual behavior. The participants who responded that their parents have a less permissive attitude about sexual activity were less likely to be engaged in sexual behavior. There were significant relationships between sexual behavior and other variables, such as dating, experience of sexual activity, smoking and grades. Conclusion: Students who have a higher score of sexual attitude and had an experience of sexual activity were more likely to be at higher risk of being sexually.

Influence of Chinese International Students' Family Strengths on Social Networking Services Addiction Tendency: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Ego Resilience (중국 유학생의 가족건강성이 SNS 중독경향성에 미치는 영향: 자아탄력성의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of ego resilience on the relationship between family strengths of Chinese international students and Social Networking Services(SNS) addiction tendency. The data were collected through a survey of 349 Chinese international students studying in Korea and analyzed using the SPSS Statistics version 28 program and SPSS Process Macro 4.3. The main results are as follows. First, Chinese international students exhibited higher-than-average levels of SNS addiction tendency, family strengths, and ego resilience. Second, the SNS addiction tendency of Chinese international students had a significant positive correlation with the average time spend on SNS per day. while demonstrating a negative correlation with family strengths and ego resilience. Third, the hierarchical regression analysis revelated that gender, frequency of contact with family, average time spend on SNS per day, qualitative bond as a sub variable of family strengths, and control as a sub variables of ego resilience were significant factors influencing SNS addiction tendency of Chinese international students. Fourth, the study confirmed the complete mediation of ego resilience in the effect of family strengths on SNS addiction tendency. Based on the research results, this study suggested specific directions for counseling interventions aimed at mitigating SNS addiction tendencies among Chinese international students.
