  • In this paper, the Observer Controller IDentification/Eigensystem Realization Algorithm(OCID/ERA) is applied to identify the state space model of a helicopter in hover from a given set of the general input-output data. The objective of this paper is the evaluation of the utility of the OCID/ERA approach to the system identification of a system which has natural unstable mode like a helicopter and to give some guidelines before applying the technique to the real system. As it mentioned above, since a model helicopter is unstable naturally, the closed-loop system identification method(OCID/ERA) using excitation, output and feedback signals of the simulated system is applied.

  • A number of navigation improvements are envisaged : Differential GPS - WAAS, LAAS, and Performance Based Navigation. The GPS receiver verifies the integrity(usability) of the signals received from the GPS constellation through a process called receiver autonomous integrity monitoring(RAIM) to determine if a satellite is providing corrupted information. This paper describe the RAIM function and Performance-Based Navigation implementation of Mission Equipment Package(MEP) for Korean Utility Helicopter.

  • Mission Equipment Package(MEP) system is a collection of avionic components that are integrated to perform the mission of the Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). MEP system development is classified mission-critical embedded system but KUH MEP system developed including flight-critical data implementation. It is important to establish the good development and verification process for the successful system development. This paper describe the development and verification process in each phase for the KUH MEP system. MEP system design is verified through the qualification test, system failure test and compatibility test in System Integration Laboratory(SIL).

  • Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) has been designed to avoid the blade passing frequency and any instability due to a coupling of dynamic characteristics between the main rotor and the airframe in ground operation. For these design objectives, the vibration analysis and the ground resonance analysis were performed to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the airframe and the main rotor. Then, the whirl-tower test was conducted to identify the dynamic characteristics of the main rotor and the ground vibration test (GVT) was conducted to identify the dynamic characteristics of the airframe. The GVT for KUH was conducted with the test conditions and test articles established in consideration of each flight and ground condition. This paper shows the method and technique for performing the GVT for KUH and presents the correlation technique and the results for the correlated analysis model.

  • Aircraft fuel indicator is a device to indicate the amount of fuel remained during flight, where accurate and consistent operation of the indicator should be maintained. Previously the Korean Utility Helicopter fuel indicator sporadically displayed abnormal sign by "8888" during flight, jeopardizing flight safety. Inappropriate EMI/EMC performance was detected during trouble shooting process. The cause of the abnormal display was found to be resulted from unstable power induced by electro-magnetic disturbance and CAN communication error. The aircraft fuel indicator design was improved and the design compatibility was verified to avoid abnormal display.

  • Full authority digital engine control systems for gas turbine engines are replacing conventional mechanical control units rapidly. However, setting up design processes of controllers for high performance helicopter engines are not well known because of the complexity of the total system. This paper presents a high fidelity helicopter and engine simulation for control system design and analysis. Using this environment, a feedforward schedule was set up for a utility helicopter. The total engine simulation with the new controller showed better or equal performance compared to the total engine simulation with the pre-existing controller.

  • The rotorcraft makes lift and control forces by the rotor thrust. At the development phase of the rotorcraft, the operational limitations have to be established. And it shall be demonstrated to operate the rotorcraft safely within the limitations. This paper introduces establishment and evaluation results of operational rotor speed limitations for the medium class utility rotorcraft. And it shows the follow-up activities after design changes of rotor speed indicators and aural warning systems for implementing the rotor speed limitations.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of the factors modulating the urgency perception of voice alarm generated by concatenative synthesizers. Four experiments were conducted using psycho-physical approach in which 112 participants made magnitude estimation for urgency perception of various voice alarm stimuli. Experiment 1 identified 6 acoustic and non-acoustic factors modulating the perceived urgency of synthesized voice alarm. Experiment 2, 3 and 4 quantified the relations between the objective changes in each of the quantifiable parameters and the subjective changes in urgency perception. This research has implications for the design and implementation of synthesized voice alarm systems where urgency mapping is required.

  • Military rotary aircraft are heavily exposed to projectile environments due to their mission characteristics, and fires caused by fuel leaks after shooting are linked directly to the loss of human life. To improve the survivability of pilots and crews, the fuel tank in rotary aircraft must have gunfire resistance and anti-explosion characteristics. Gunfire resistance can be satisfied by applying a self-sealing cell to a fuel tank. Anti-explosion can be satisfied by reducing the oxygen concentration in an explosive area and suppressing the generation of combustible fuel vapor by minimizing the evaporation rate of the fuel by heat. A Korean utility helicopter applies anon-board inert gas generation system to meet the anti-explosion requirements for ballistic impact. The generator fills the fuel tank with an inert gas and reduces the oxygen concentration. This paper describes the overall development process of the OBIGGS developed in accordance with the localization process of weapon components. OBIGGS was developed/manufactured through domestic technology, and the performance was found to be equal to or better than that of the existing products through single performance tests and aircraft mounting tests.
