  • A total of 200 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 60 years, were selected for the study. Each had at least one tooth which was restored with complete cast gold crown and a nonrestored contralateral tooth with no clinical evidence of caries and periodontal disease. The gingival tissues adjacent to the crowned and nonrestored teeth were examined to determine the evaluation of the severity of inflammation and probed to determine individual pocket depth. The findings are listed here. 1. The average sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to crowned teeth was 1.99. The average sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to nonrestored teeth was 0.67. 2. The average gingival sulcus depth adjacent to crowned teeth was 2.19mm. The average gingival sulcus depth adjacent to non restored teeth was 1.68mm. 3. No difference could be found between the average gingival sulcus bleeding index and average gingival sulcus depth of male and those of female. 4. The difference between sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to crowned teeth and sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to nonrestored teeth increased with increased age of the cast crown.

  • SEM observation revealed that the gastric mill of Nyctiphanes australis consists of paired cluster spines and paired lateral teeth, while the filter-press is absent. The morphology of the gastric mill was extremely constant; the numbers of both setiform processes of cluster spines and serrated spines of lateral teeth increased with increasing body length. The cluster spines of N. australis consisted of a single row of stout setiform processes but the lateral teeth comprised a large projection with small serrated spines. The cluster spines are symmetrical in setiform process distribution, however, the lateral teeth are asymmetrical in number of serrated spines.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to correlation between the index of dental caries in primary teeth and the habits of diet and snack which are expected to influence on the index. The subjects of this study were 165 parents of the children who visited a pediatric dental hospital located in Gyeong-gi do from Jun. 15th to Sep. 26th, 2009, and the self-report questionnaire survey was performed. Methods : A questionnaire used in a previous study was revised and completed for this study and it consisted of 15 items on general characteristic, nine items on dietary habit, and five items on snack intake habit. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS program and findings are as follows Results : 1. The index of dental caries in primary teeth by ages was that children of four years old has 4~5 with 27.5%, children of five years old has 2~3 and 4~5 with 33.3% and children of six years old has 1 and 8~9 with 25.6%, showing a statistically significant(${\chi}^2$=37.72, p<.01). 2. The frequency of brushing teeth was found to have statistically significant negative correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=61.20, p<.001). 3. The frequency of taking snack was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=51.42, p<.001). 4. The desirability of dietary habit was found to have statistically significant negative correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=36.51, p<.001). 5. The frequency of taking biscuit was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=67.74, p<.001). 6. The frequency of taking bread was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=29.63, p<.01). 7. The frequency of taking caramel and candy was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=38.85, p<.001). 8. The frequency of taking soft drinks was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=52.92, p<.001). 9. The frequency of taking ice-creams was found to have statistically significant positive correlation with the number of primary teeth with dental caries (${\chi}^2$=75.07, p<.001). Conclusions : Those findings show that the children with undesirable dietary habit and higher frequency of taking snack have higher index of dental caries in primary teeth, therefore, it is considered that the regular brushing teeth and establishment of desirable dietary habit are very important for keeping health oral cavity. It is recommended that the continuous concern and repeated learning are needed in house and group of rearing infants so that the children take foods of fruits which have function of self-purification than the food of carbohydrates which has high adhesion and level of sweetness.

  • Mesiodens is developmental tooth anomaly which is commonly found in clinical pediatric dentistry. however, it may cause many partial problem in tooth alignment when congenitally missing teeth was accompanied by mesiodens. The terms, concomitant hypodontia and hyperdontia' and oligo-pleiodontia' have been used to describe the condition in witch developmental absence of teeth and supernumerary teeth are present in the same individual. Only a few case reports of this rare condition which is opposite developmental phenomena exist in the literature. The purpose of this study is survey of congenitally missing teeth in mesiodens case and to compare previous literature of congenitally missing teeth in normal. The subjects were 310 children(247 male and 63 female) at the age from 5 to 12 years visiting the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Pusan National University Hospital with mesiodens for last 3 years. With their pantomograms we studied congenitally missing teeth except permanent 3rd molar. 1. The preference of congenitally missing teeth in mesiodens cases was revealed to be 17.1%(53 out of 310 in total), and there was a higher prevalence in females(22.2%) than in males(15.8%). 2. The most frequently missing teeth were maxillary lateral incisors(22.7%) and mandibular second premolars(22.7%), followed by maxillary second premolar(17.3%), and mandibular lateral incisors(16.0%). There was no significant differences between maxilla(49.3%) and mandible(50.7%). 3. In number of congenitally missing teeth per person, 69.9% had one missing tooth, 22.7% had two missing teeth and 9.4% had three missing teeth.
