Understanding of the properties of woods is important in wood utilization. Until now, traditional wooden houses(Korean-style house, Buddhist temple, royal palaces) and furniture have been made of domestic woods with the experience of a craftsman rather than the scientific knowledge on woods. Because of concrete-based houses and imported wood products and furniture, even wood craftsmen decrease in number, too. This study was carried out to collect wood samples growing in Korea and to measure wood characteristics. Anatomical, physical and mechanical properties of 37 wood species were investigated.

The purpose of this study was to examine the application tendency about the elements of the western classical style which appears in Korean commercial space. The examined objects were 436 pictures of 106 commercial spaces from the different monthly magazines between Sep. 1994 to Sep. 1999. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The tendency of application according to the kind of space, it has appeared much in restaurants and cafes which are being made into high-class centering around Kangnam area. As for the single application in commercial space, Renaissance style was shown most, and the cases applied through the mixture of Renaissance style and Neo-classic style appeared most. 2. The tendency of application arroding to the composition elements of space, the wall of Renaissance style and N대-classic style appeared similarly, and the ceiling of Renaissance style, the window and door of N대-classic style, the column of Renaissance style, and the furniture of Rococo style were being applied much.

The purpose of this study was to analyze behavioral patterns of elderly residents and to identify the characteristics of using furniture and home appliances by elderly-headed households. For this purpose, field studies that included observation and open-ended interview were conducted with 52 elderly-headed households. The major findings of this study were as follows: elderly-headed households need home appliances with lighter body, lower capacity and simple functions. Furniture for elderly people should be designed to minimize the inconvenience of using western style furniture, also the behavior patterns which are important to the elderly like taking medicine have to be considered. And it is necessary to design furniture and equipments properly to prevent accidents happened in housing. Lastly, because the elderly relies heavily on watching TV, it will be desirable to apply TV-friendly devices such as home networking and home automation. Research results will be useful information on product design to reflect characteristics of elderly and follow-up studies associated with each furniture and appliances and specific living behavior are needed.

It has been true that major investment among local business hotels were placed in furniture design character as there are increasing number of international events hosted by Korea. The study, under these circumstances, as a study In advance to see the design feature and trend of local business hotel's guest room furniture, has done interview with guest room manager, photographing of rooms, actual survey for analysing guest room plane surface, etc., researcher directly visiting 15 hotels that have special first grade businessmen only floor in Seoul. In addition, a survey has been done to know if each hotel room and furniture has particular image, from this survey the design feature of local business hotel's guest room has been analysed, and the result is as following. The result shows that similar pattern is applied in furniture placement of each guest room but for the furniture type and design concept, some try to re-design of wooden furniture available in Lee dynasty and others adopt European style like France and United Kingdom for the realization of semi-classic image. Typical material and color is red oak and maple.

As Korea has rapidly entered the aging society, the Korean government and academia are currently undergoing many researches on senior citizens. There also has been an increase in senior citizens' awareness on the importance of spatial designs that reflect the newly emerged needs brought out by their psychological and emotional changes as well as their physical aspects. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to propose a model for senior citizens' image preference to be adopted in future developments for senior-friendly spatial designs. A literature review and a questionnaire survey were implemented as research methods. The questionnaire survey was conducted at two senior welfare centers located in Seoul and Ansan and two disparate senior colleges, on the subjects of 86 senior citizens aged 60 and older. 7 styles of Romantic, Classic, Country, Modern, Natural, Casual, and Traditional were chosen for the study and the realms to apply the image preference were divided into Space, Element1 and Element2. For Space, its subcategories have been restricted to living room and bedroom while color, furniture and lighting for Element1 and material, pattern and props for Element2. Survey results were statistically analyzed for the correlation among socio-demographic factors of senior citizens, spaces and the elements. The study result showed that older age and men tended to prefer the modern style than younger age or women, and younger women preferred the romantic style. For the color preference in Element1, older men preferred the classic style while women preferred the romantic style. And, for the furniture preference, men with higher income preferred the natural style while women preferred the romantic style. For the pattern preference in Element2, younger people preferred the casual style and it showed that the housing type was the main reason for their preferences. Therefore, the image preference according to their age and gender shall be taken account of as the most important factors when designing environments for senior citizens.

This study is a theoretical approach by literature about life style and housing life style. The purpose of this research is making an analysis model of housing life style which can be used as a conceptual framework in empirical study. the theme of‘Life style’was studied mainly in the area of consumerism and housing. Model was made to explore the sub-domain of new analysis model by the microsociological approach. As results, 1) Independent variable of housing life style research model must be selected to be possible of comparison in effect of objective and subjective variable and in effect of predictive function and well-being function of housing life style. 2) Sub-domain of housing life style must be consisted of value orientation of family life, consumption in house, consumer durables, furniture., and propensity to using space. 3) Conceptual model of housing life style must be tested in empirical study to know what is the housing adjustment behavior of individual family, to improve quality of housing life and to suggest housing policy for family as a consumer.

With development of digital technology and globalization after Seoul Olympic in 1988, Korea has recklessly accepted western culture, thus causing damages to Korean identity The purpose of this study is to design Imperial Palace Hotel VIP lounge space applying traditional Korean style. This study analyzed traditional expression according to its element and method taken out from the prior researches related to it. The method of traditional expressions divided into the method of prototype reappearance, prototype transformation, reinterpretation, and abstract. This study aimed at get the understanding on traditional Korean architecture, space planning and furniture arrangement. As a result, the plan represent traditional Korean style including the space planning and furniture, the colors and patterns, and the building materials. The Imperial Palace VIP lounge Is not tile space for eating and social activities, but also provide the space for introducing traditional Korean culture and life.

The move from steel tubes to bent wood and the 'laboratory experiments' with wood which Aalto carried out in order to create furniture gave him vital impulses as he sought and found his own architecture style in the 1930s. Like his architecture Aalto's chair designs represent a 'humanized' interpretation of the severe aesthetic and radical technological experimentation of the Modern Movement. The purpose of this study is to find what is the result of the form of his works on the basis of main idea and tend of his works, to search the element and principle of formal composition, to establish the relation-ship between the architect's philosophy and the form of his works. Aalto's furniture, constructed of laminate bent wood or moulded plywood, is not only functionalistic, but also ideal for the psychological need of the people, which is the special quality that complements the Factionalism that features mostly on the metal tube furniture. It shows that Aalto is a humanist dealing with mechanized age.

Modified poplar has emerged as a potential raw material for furniture production. Lack of specific modified poplar strength information; however, restricts applications in the furniture industry especially as related to strength in corner-joints. Optimization of strength in L-shaped corner dowel modified poplar joints under compression loads utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) by Taguchi method with the focus of this study. Four experiment factors (i.e., Structure Style, Tenon Length, Tenon Diameter, and Tenon Gap), each at three levels, were conducted by adopting a $L_9-3^4$ Taguchi orthodoxy array (OA) to determine the optimal combination of factors and levels for the von Mises stress utilizing ANSYS software. Results of Signal-to-Noise ratio (S/N) analysis and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed the optimal L-shaped corner dowel joint in modified poplar is $45^{\circ}$ Bevel Butt in structure style, 24 mm in tenon length, 6 mm in tenon diameter, and 20 mm in tenon gap. Tenon length and tenon gap are determined to be significant design factors for affecting von Mises Stress. Confirmation tests with optimal levels and experimental test indicated the predicted optimal condition is comparable to the actual experimental optimal condition.

The purpose of this study is to develop a checklist based on the stored items of cooking, for making a good kitchen furniture reseach. The research candidates are purposive sampled from 30 households of for 40 or 50 pyeong-type apartments in Kangnam, Seoul, The research data are is collected gotten at by a field study of the stored items of cooking, eating and utility area, by an in-depth interview to 30 households, and by a field survey of the department stores, super-markets of home appliances. Studied households in average hold about 890 items, which are classified as 239 sorts. The first step of making the checklist is to categorize items into 9 biggest categories, considering the usage of items and the stage of the preparing the food. when the item was used. Second step of making the checklist is to categorize the items into 31 smaller categories, which reflect the shape of items, the storage style and the place of storage. Third step of making the checklist is to sort the items into smallest categories by the frequency of the usage, storage type, and the additional capacity of the item. Even Although items are sorted into the same level of categories, the frequency of use make a different storage area. Also, the storage style of the items was different according to the storage area. Based on these factors, we suggested a checklist based on the stored items of cooking.
