This paper explored strategic types of Korean SMEs in manufacturing industries and investigated key differences among strategic types by analysing firm size, product market, technological capabilities and performances. According to previous studies, this papers categorized SMEs into four strategic types-technological innovative SMEs, multi-product SMEs, capital-intensive SMEs, and OEM-based SMEs types. Based on the empirical survey from 1,077 Korea SMEs in diverse industries, there are significant differences among strategic types on the key characteristics including product market, resource capability and performance. Finally this paper suggested implications for the studies on SMEs and managerial and policy directions to support SMEs.
According to Korea Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)' report, SMEs account for 99% and number of SMEs workers account for 87% in Korea. Thus, SMEs has an important role in the future Korean industry. This paper considers the improvement methods of SMEs' quality competitiveness. For this study, we developed the quality measurement model for identifying SMEs' quality level and investigated many companies by survey and interviews. We also performed the benchmarking study and the gap analysis between Korea and other countries. This paper suggests some policies for increasing the quality of SMEs.

For quite a long time various researches and developments of superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) device have been done for enhancement of power qualify control of sensitive electric load. This paper describes the design. fabrication and experimental results for the 3MJ SMES magnet made by using the design code of a SMES device that we developed. A computer code was developed to find the parameters of the SMES magnet which has minimum amount of superconductor for the same stored energy, and the 3MJ SMES magnet was designed based upon that. And the 3MJ SMES magnet designed based upon those. In addition, 3MJ SMES magnet was made based on several research results which were ramp up to 1㎄ without quench.
Small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) continue to adopt ICT to gain an edge in organizational innovation and competition. This has a management advantage, but it also brings vulnerabilities as to cyber security. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to conduct an exploratory study on the cyber security situation of SMEs. A survey was conducted on Korean SMEs to determine how well they are connected to ICT and how much they are exposed to cyber security threats. The results suggest two things. First, Korean SMEs are well connected to ICT, but there is a gap between the actual adoption and human recognition of its importance. Second, security threats and breaches affect the majority of SMEs, but several problems including costs have not been properly evaluated. The results of this study are expected to help improve the cyber security management system of Korean SMEs.
This study explores the role of relationship banking for the exports of SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) in Korea. Using a sample of SMEs listed on the Korean stock markets between 2004 and 2018, I find that relationship banking has a positive impact on exporting behaviors of SMEs. This result indicates that relationship banking is suitable for SMEs to raise their funds in the export decision-making since the incentive for banks to obtain soft information enhances SMEs' access to external finance. In particular, through further analysis considering financial constraints, I find that the positive impact of relationship banking on exports is amplified for financially constrained SMEs. In addition, the positive impact on exports is also amplified for export starters. Finally, relationship banking provides benefits for SMEs' export decision-making regardless of the financial crisis. To sum up, relationship banking may be useful means of financing for Korean SMEs whose creditworthiness cannot be assessed only by hard information. As the role of finance in international trade has recently been highlighted, this study provides insightful evidence that relationship banking may enhance exports of SMEs as a source of trade finance.

Recently, the export for SMEs is the main issue as the successful key for enterprises. For this reason, Many SMEs want to try the export and the supports are provided by government. This phenomenon reflects that the export should be necessary to SMEs, even other enterprises. This study analyzes 6 enterprises (Enterprise of middle standing: 2, SMEs:4) to research the main factors for export using the interview and survey. The result provides 5 implications for the export of SMEs in Busan Region. In summary, we can provide 3 main proposes for the export of SMEs. 1) The differentiation of various support that can be a real help to SMEs, 2) The differentiation of education on exports. 3) The simplification for the complex administrative procedures about export.

The employment effect of innovation-certified SMEs (venture certification, inno-biz certification and main-biz certification) and general SMEs was compared and analyzed. Through propensity score matching, general SMEs with similar tendencies to SMEs for each innovation certification were selected. The employment effect was approached from two perspectives: the absolute employment effect, the employment growth rate, and the relative employment effect, the sales-employment coefficient. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that venture certified SMEs and inno-biz certified SMEs, which are technology innovation-type certifications, have an advantage in absolute employment effect. In addition, it was concluded that innovation-certified SMEs have more room for employment than general SMEs by achieving sales growth that exceeds employment growth. Therefore, there is a possibility to enhance the employment effect of innovation-certified SMEs by strengthening employment-related incentives for innovation-certified SMEs.
SMEs need a strategy to respond to rapid changes in the global business environment of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In order to overcome such a business environment, SMEs must concentrate on the core competency. Because of the structural characteristics of SMEs, government support is very important, as it is difficult for SMEs to carry out the entire supply chain role. The support of GRIs is very important for ensuring competitiveness through technological innovation of SMEs. Recently, the construction of SMEs network for business expansion is demanded. SMEs can form networks to induce synergistic effects. In order to secure the competitiveness of SMEs by utilizing the advantages of mutually cooperating networks, the necessity of cooperation of SMEs is increasing. The government has proposed various support programs to support network cooperation. In this research, in order to derive an effective strategy of the SME support program, we analyzed the difference in necessity and satisfaction of the GRIs support program. We analyze the differences between government policies and perceptions for SMEs and to derive strategies for supporting SMEs in a systematic approach for the development of SMEs. In a situation where research to revitalize SMEs is insufficient, in consideration of the market demand of SMEs, we grasp the problems of the current system and try to guide improvement strategies. Also, we suggest policies that can derive and utilize support strategies for SMEs. From a long-term perspective, research related SMEs must be conducted and a sustainable support program for SMEs must be developed.

Through the Korean version of the New Deal 2.0, manufacturing-oriented SMEs are facing a new environmental change called smart factory construction. In addition, SMEs are facing new security threats along with a contactless environment due to COVID-19. However, it is practically impossible to apply the previously researched and developed security management system to protect the core technology of manufacturing-oriented SMEs due to the lack of economic capacity of SMEs. Therefore, through research on security management systems suitable for SMEs, it is necessary to strengthen their business competitiveness and ensure sustainability through proactive responses to security threats faced by SMEs. The security management system presented in this study is a security management system to prevent technology leakage applicable to SMEs by deriving and reflecting the minimum security requirements in consideration of technology protection point of view, smart factory, and remote access in a non-contact environment. It is also designed in a modular form. The proposed security management system is standardized and can be selectively used by SMEs.
The characteristic of the superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) system is faster response, longer life time, more economical, and environment friendly than other uninterruptible power supply(UPS) using battery. So, the SMES system can be used to develop methods for improving power quality where a short interruption of power could lead to a long and costly shutdown. Recently, cryogen free SMES has developed using BSCCO(Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) wire. We fabricated and tested the conduction cooling system for the 600 kJ class HTS SMES. The experiment was accomplished for the simulation coils. The simulation coils were made of aluminium, it is equivalent to thermal mass of 600 kJ HTS SMES coil. The coil is cooled with two GM coolers through the copper conduction bar. In this paper, we report that the test results of cool-down and heat loads characteristics of the simulation coils. The developed conduction cooling system adapted to 600 kJ HTS SMES system and cope with the unexpected sudden heat impact, too.
