  • The electric propulsion system requires more reliability and safety than the conventional propulsion system because any sudden changes of electric system would bring tremendous effects on the ship's safety and propulsion. So it is very important to consider the potential transient effects. This paper discusses one of the worst electric accident. That is, one or two of generators are out of service in normal seagoing condition. And the appropriate measures are simulated in order to prevent the frequency decline that can bring the other generator's tripping. In addition, the relation between the transient effects and the major factors(inertia of generator/motors, governor's drooping characteristic and response speed) are also identified using the ETAP software.

  • A propeller has been considered as one of the most critical elements in propelling ships. However, only a little research on the marine propeller has been carried out. Furthermore, fractures of the propeller have been frequently caused by fatigue, but only tensile strength, yield strength and elongation are discussed in Register of Shipping. For the above reasons, we have evaluated strength properties of A1BC3 and HBsC1, both which have been used for the marine propeller by using air jet chisel and then, presented a method of improving the strength.

  • Weather routing method is one of the best practices of SEEMP (Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan) for fuel-efficient operation of ship. KR is carrying out a basic research for development of the weather routing algorithm and making a monitoring system by FOC (Fuel Oil Consumption) analysis compared to the reference, which is the great circle route. The added resistances applied global sea/weather data can be calculated using ship data, and the results can be corrected to ship motions. The global sea/weather data such as significant wave height, ocean current and wind data can be used to calculate the added resistances. The reference route in a usual navigation is the great circle route, which is the shortest distance route. The global sea/weather data can be divided into grids, and the nearest grid data from a ship's position can be used to apply a ocean going vessel's sea conditions. Powell method is used as an optimized routing technique to minimize FOC considered sea/weather conditions, and FOC result can be compared with the great circle route result.

  • In general, the strength assessment for heavy lift vessel is carried out under two stages. The first stage is to comply with the requirement of KR (Korean Register of Shipping) Steel Barges and Rules for Classification of Steel Ships. At the second stage, the structural strength analysis by Finite Element Method is peformed. This paper describes the strength assessment considering various loads for the heavy lift vessel of sheerleg type.

  • Drones, which were first developed for the military use, have been widely applied in various industrial fields through the rapid development of element technology. Following this trend, the marine industry has started to utilize drones for maintenance and inspection purposes, especially, in Europe. To extend the use of drones in the marine industry, this paper first discusses the necessity of drones for the marine use by presenting problems related to maintenance and inspection works on ships and offshore plants. In addition, the technical levels of advanced countries where drones have been commercialized already in the marine industry are mentioned. Furthermore, technical challenges that must be solved are explained in preparation for a drone era in the marine industry. Lastly, the potential growth of the drone market in the marine industry is considered.

  • Rotor blades are important devices that affect the power performance, efficiency of energy conversion, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. When a design is complete, a design evaluation should be performed to verify the structural integrity of the proposed blade in accordance with international standards or guidelines. This paper presents a detailed exposition of the evaluation items and acceptance criteria required for the design certification of wind turbine blades. It also presents design evaluation results for a 2-MW blade (KR40.1b). Analyses of ultimate strength, buckling stability, and tip displacement were performed using FEM, and Miner's rule was applied to evaluate the fatigue life of the blade. The structural integrity of the KR40.1b blade was found to satisfy the design standards.

  • The strength data on AlBC3 and HBsC1 which are used for materials of marine propeller blade are insufficient as used of material limited and even rules of KR(Korean Register of Shipping) describe only a point of view that the chemical composition and men values of mechanical proper-ties have to be certain level. In this study distribution characteristics as well as mean values of mechanical properties are investigated through the tensile test and the characteristics of fatigue strength are investigated through the fatigue test.

  • This paper describes basic structural design for the large floating crane barge of fixed undulation type. Structural analysis is performed to divide two parts because crane barge is composed two parts, crane part of jib boom back stay and back tower and barge part to support crane part. The structural strength for jib boom structure members are in compliance with JIS B 8821 and scantling of all barge structural members are in compliance with the requirement of KR (Korean Register of Shipping) Steel Barges and Rules for Classification of Steel Ships. For the structural analysis of large floating crane, MSC/NASTRAN & MSC/PATRAN software is used.
