Progress and Prospect of Research on Old Maps in Korea (우리나라 고지도의 연구 동향과 과제)

  • In Korean academic societies, old maps has not yet been properly investigated in terms of their genealogy, classification, detailed place names, historical backgrounds and the other aspects. With publication of the bibliographies and papers on old maps reserved in museum and library, the scope of research enlarged gradually its scope from 1970s. In 1980s, with the development of theoretical geography, scientific analysis were applied to investigate the projection method of Daedongyeo-jido. The 1990s proved a prominent decade for researches. The photo-copies of old maps enabled researchers to investigate the in-depth comparative study. The more important thing is that old maps became to be powerful instrument in the research of historical geography, such as territorial disputes and marine name(東海). And county old maps compiled by region became to be regional-cultural contents of local areas. Important issues in old map research in Korean academic societies are about Cheonha-do which is unique old world map in Korea, grid-system projection in old county maps and the genealogy of Daedongyeo-jido(manuscript and block print edition). This study shows that bibliography of all old maps preserved in each library and museum should be standardized. This could enable the exchange of information of old maps between institutes. The more important thing is that conciliation of human, social and natural sciences should be applied in the research of old maps.

A Study on the Eubj(邑誌) in the Yi Dynasty -Based upon the existing Eubjis- (조선왕조(朝鮮王朝)의 읍지연구(邑誌硏究))

  • A. The principal geographical descriptions compiled by the government during Yi dynasty started from the Shinchan-Paldo-Chiriji(新撰八道地理志) which was compiled by the royal decree in the sixth year (1424) of King Sejong(世宗) and it ended in the Jungbo-Munhonbiko(增補文獻備考) which was published in the second year(1908) of Yunghyi(隆熙). The process of their compilations can be divided into four steps according to the compilatory work's contents of the principal geographical descriptions which were compiled through the Yi dynasty. We can say that the first step (1424-1454) of those works began at the date of the compilation of the Shinchan-Paldochiriji and it ended in the date of the compilation of the "Sejongsilok-Chiriji"(世宗實錄地理志), and during that period the Kyonsangdo-Chiriji(慶尙道地理志) was published. In the second step(1455-1531), were published the Paldochiriji,(八道地理志), Kyongsangdosokchanchiriji(慶尙道續撰地理志), DonggukYojisungnam(東國與地勝覽) and the third step (1532-1769) began at the date of the compilation of the Dongguk-Munhonbiko(東國文獻備考) and it ended in the date of the publication of the Jungbo-Munhonbiko(東國文獻備考), and in that period the Jongjung-Munhonbiko(訂增文獻備考) was published. The works of compilation of the Eubjis in the period of King Kojong(高宗) came within the category of the fourth step. B. Generally speaking, the state geographical descriptions were composed of the regional data of the country which were collected and arranged. In other words, firstly, the Eubjis were compiled in each county, secondly, the Dojis(道誌) were compiled based upon the collections of all the Kunjis(郡誌), lastly, the government collected all the Dojis and compiled them into the state geographical descriptions. The Eubjis in the early days of Yi dynasty were compiled as the data for the compilation of the nation-wide geographical descriptions, but the Eubjis in the age of King Kojong were compiled as the administrative data. C. The main contents of the Eubjis were composed of the descriptions on the geography, history, industry, naval and military affairs, traffics, communication, administration, economy and society, and of the matters on the prose and poetry, persons of loyalty, historic remains, social customs and schools. Consequently, the above-mentioned data will be contributed to the study on the structures of the geography, history, economy, administration, education, naval and military affairs and traffics as well as the study on the literature, social customs and bibliography. Especially, they will be important data for the arrangement of cultural assets of our country. Furthermore, because the traditional study of national literature was centered around the study on the central government ignoring the study on the regional matters, the study of the Eubjis will be worthy of being valued.

A Case Study on the Preservation Treatment of Ancient Documents -Focusing on the "Keumganggyung-samgahae" from the Four Devas of Borimsa, Buddhist Temple at Jangheung County- (고문헌의 보존처리에 관한 사례연구 -장흥 보림사 사천왕상에서 발견된 『금강경삼가해』를 중심으로 -)

  • This research studied the preservation treatment of the papered literature the national treasure 745-9 $\ulcorner$Keumganggyung-samgahae$\lrcorner$, discovered in 1995 from the Four Devas of Borimsa Buddhist Temple at Jangheung County, in the viewpoint of the bibliography. The overall features of the $\ulcorner$Keumganggyung-samgahae$\lrcorner$ were of 25.3cm width, 38.9cm height 1.5cm depth, 58 pages and of high-fine yellow-brown colored reef paper. The book was ruined physically in the shape and color. The covers of the book were deeply stained by the permeated rain and some internal pages were changing into brown color by corrosion. The treatment policies were; maintaining the status quo and capable repeated treatment. And the preservation treatment was done in the sequences of 1) 1st cleaning process, 2) repairing and correcting, 3) 2nd cleaning and preservation 4) cutting, binding the book and making the envelope and wood box. The post-preservation features of $\ulcorner$Keumganggyung-samgahae$\lrcorner$ were; total 64 pages and the size being 25.8 cm width 39.4cm of lenght, and 1.9cm of depth.

  • For the sake of the Restoration(to the original state) of "Sanbeon-bang(刪繁方)", in this study observed carefully the bibliographical results of "Oedaebiyo-bang", "Cheongeumyo-bang", "Cheongeumik-bang" and "Uisim-bang", which directly quoted "Sanbeon-bang". "Sanbeon-bang" is mostly remained in "Oedaebiyo-bang", and the other provisions of "Sanbeon-bang" mostly lie scattered in "Cheongeumyo-bang" and "Cheongeumik-bang", established 100years before "Oedaebiyo-bang" and "Uisim-bang", established 200years after "Oedaebiyo-bang". And there are few other documents which quoted the "Sanbeon-bang". "Cheongeumyo-bang", a synthetic medical work was compiled in 652, and which refered large quantity of medical documents before Dang-dynasty(唐代) by Son Sa-mak(孫思邈). And he linked the technical opinion of himself. The comments of medicine, as well as the prescriptions are refleting the outcome before Dang-dynasty systematically. For the most part of the medical arguments in "Sanbeon-bang" lie scattered in "Cheongeumyo-bang". "Cheongeumik-bang", also a synthetic medical work which is for the sake of supplement of "Cheongeumyo-bang" was complied in 682 by Son Sa-mak. As well as "CheongeumYo-bang" it doesn't make clear the sources of quotation from "Sanbeon-bang". So it used as the data for confirmation. "Oedaebiyo-bang" was compiled in 752 of Dang-Dynasty by Wang Do(王燾) the a governor-general of Eop-gun. Wang Do was descended from a noble family, and usually visited the palace and dealed with large number of books in Hongmunguan(弘文館), the national library. He programmed the book on the base of wide scopic collection of medical documents. And he took charge of gverment post at the same time as Wang Bing(王氷) who compiled "Chaju-Hwangje-Naegyeong-Somun(次注黃帝內經素問)" in 762. So we can guess they might have seen the same documents and holded the medical knowledge in common. The 40 volume "Oedaebiyo-bang" was a great medical complete book in those days. In particular, it became the model of medical complete books of after ages. The description of the book is mostly the qutation of medical documents of before ages. The character is recording of quotation documents and the order of volume. On the base of the recording, we can reconstruct the table of contents of Sanbeon-bang. By way of the contens, we can understand the purpose of "Sanbeon-bang". Besides, I can see a lot of qouotations of "Sanbeon-bang" in "Cheongeum-bang" and "Uisim-bang" are repeatedly quotated in "Oedaebiyo-bang". For that reason, I observed the bibliographical results of "Oedaebiyo-bang" in detail. "Uisim-bang" was compiled in 982 by the Japanese Niwayasyori(丹波綱賴). It followed the example of the structure of "Oedaebiyo-bang", refered to the contents of "Cheongeumyo-bang", collected chinese medical classic books spreaded in Japan. It contains medical documents of before Su-Dang(隋唐)-era, indicated the source of quotation. The importance of the book is summarization and preservation of large quantity of chinese medicine before 10th century. In this study, a lot of the quotation in "Uisim-bang" from "Sanbeon-bang" were not in "Oedaebiyo-bang".

Phytohydrographic Plankton Studies during the First Half of the 20th Century in Korean Neritic Seas (20세기 전반 한국 근해역 플랑크톤의 식물수문학적 연구)

  • From the cosmopolitan superiority of the as the first world map completed in 1402 with surprisingly detailed images and contents on the Africa Continent it is reasonable to think that the Koreans in early fifteen century were already with highly up-to-date perspectives on the universe and world history and cultures. However, some 490 year later the first phytohydrographic plankton investigation in the neritic seas of Korea was performed by a Japanese company with sampling points covering from Tokyo Bay through Jeju neritic waters to Shanghai estuary, which was in turn preceded by the first oceanographic investigation other than the simple mapping Koreans seas by using two French sailboats. The first phytohydrographic plankton investigation in Korean seas were behind the world first oceanic plankton exploration, the German Plankton Expedition, by 25 years. Starting from the oceanographic investigation including phytohydrographic samplings in the whole Yellow Sea in 1915 the full-scale phytohydrographic plankton studies were tried in Korean seas which is well represented by the 1921 oceanographic investigation on the whole East Sea with 80 sampling stations. In 1932 two separate oceanographic investigations followed, one in the East Sea where 78 stations from Busan to southern Sakhalin Island were simultaneously visited by 50 research vessels for the physical, chemical, and biological oceanographic studies, and the other one in southern coast and western East Sea of Korea where ocean current observation as well as plankton sampling were made in 120 stations to understand the relationship between the ocean current and plankton distribution in the region. In 1933-1934 more intensified investigations on phytohydrography were carried out particularly in the East Sea as an integral part of the basic marine ecosystem studies for the Myeong-Tae (Alaska Pollock) resources estimation. Scientists' attitude for the marine investigation and research activities seemed to be almost unchanging even to the year 1943, which could be reflected by the fact that publication of the results from the investigations performed in 1945 were finally done in 1967 at Tokyo. Some 70 years later from the mid-twenty century we might be standing on the turning-point of "need to be prepared" for the new era of changing paradigm by reviewing, archiving, and analyzing the prior information big data from the previous ocean observation and biohydrographic investigations. At the same time each professional societies for the above mentioned sciences might trigger a continuous project to reorganize and update the records on related bibliography and its history every 30 years.

A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE THEMATIC DISTRIBUTION OF THE ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY AND THE JAPANESE SOCIETY OF PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY (90년대 이후 미국과 일본 소아치과학회지 게재논문의 분야별 분포에 관한 비교 연구)

  • To identify the trend of pediatric dentistry in USA and Japan, closely related to Korean pediatric dentistry. The Japanese Journal of Pediatric Dentistry(JJPD) and The Journal of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry(PD) were reviewed. We collected the bibliographical data of the articles published in the two journals from 1991 to 2000. We analyzed thematic distributions and chronological changes, and then compare those of two groups. The following results were obtained: 1. The 869 articles were published in JJPD and 672 in PD. This was about 30% more in JJPD. 2. In both JJPD and PD, the case reports were a quarter of scientific articles in quantity. 3. The studies on the systemic diseases had the highest proportion in both JJPD and PD. The studies on the dental caries and restorative materials also had high proportion in both journals. 4. The studies on the sedation and biochemical survey had high proportion in PD when had low proportion in JJPD. To the contrary, The studies on the behavior science in JJPD were about double of those in PD. 5. There was no statistically significant difference in quantity between JJPD and PD in the studies on the dental caries, prevention of dental caries, community dental survey, conservative treatment, restorative materials, pulp treatment, diagnosis and treatment of malocclusion, oral pathology and minor surgery, local anesthesia and nerve tissue, traumatic injuries. 6. There was statistically significant increase in the studies on the dental equipment in JJPD and in those on restorative materials in PD. 7. There was statistically significant decrease in the studies on the prevention of dental caries and local anesthesia and nerve tissue in JJPD, and those on conservative treatment in PD.

Notes on the Status and Conservation of Callipogon Relictus Semenov in Korea (장수하늘소 현황 및 보전방안)

  • The analysis on bibliography and field investigation of Callipogon relictus Semenov, 1898 (Korean natural monument number 218) shows that the size varies from country to country, and Korean specimens, for which male is 85~120mm and female is 65~85mm, are found to be the largest. The average diameter and length of egg are 2.60mm and 6.72mm respectively. The larva has milky color and is about 100~150mm in length. The pupa is nearly 70~110mm. An adult generally appears from June to September in Korea in the broadleaf forest of lowland, whereas it appears from June to July in China. It is known that the pupa largely feed on the old tree trunk of Carpinus laxiflora (Siebold & Zucc.) blume in Korea, but no such data have been reported in China and Russia, showing differences in host plants. While the larva period is not exactly known in Korea, it is reported to be two years in China. It appears that the species inhabits in very limited regions of approximately between geographical latitude $37.5^{\circ}{\sim}47.8^{\circ}$ and longitude $126^{\circ}{\sim}140^{\circ}$ including Korea, China and Russia. To conserve the long-horned beetle in Korea, this research drew out following some conclusions through analyzing the references and field survey data. First, it need to perform precise survey on the natural environment of occurring and collected area or place including host plant kinds, temperate, humidity, latitude, longitude etc. Second, habitat region must be designated as a restricted development area, and it need to exclude or reduce the damage factors to prosper reproduction of the species. Third, it is necessary to keep loosing cautiously artificial breeding individuals in the reported sites, not disturbing scope of natural populations. Fourth, it needs to educate or publicize many people importance and value of this species through many methods.

The Restoration and Conservation of Indigo Paper in the Late Goryeo Dynasty: Focusing on Transcription of Saddharmapundarika Sutra(The Lotus Sutra) in Silver on Indigo Paper, Volume 7 (고려말 사경의 감지(紺紙) 재현과 수리 - 이화여자대학교 소장 감지은니묘법연화경을 중심으로 -)

  • The transcriptions of Buddhist sutra in the Goryeo Dynasty are more elaborate and splendid than those of any other period and occupy a very important position in Korean bibliography. Among them, the transcriptions made on indigo paper show decorative features that represent the dignity and quality that nobles would have preferred. Particularly, during the Goryeo Dynasty, a large number of transcriptions were made on indigo paper, often in hand-scrolled and folded forms. If flexibility was not guaranteed, the hand-scrolled form caused inconvenience and damage when handling the transcription because of the structural limitations of the material that is rolled up and opened. It was possible to overcome these shortcomings by changing from the hand-scrolled to the folded form to obtain convenience and structural stability. The folded form of the transcription utilizes the same principle as the folding screen, so it is a structure that can be folded and unfolded, and it is made by connecting parts at regularly spaced intervals. No matter how small the transcription is, if it is made of thin paper, it is difficult to handle it and to maintain its shape and structure. For this reason, the folded transcription was usually made of thick paper to support the structure, and the cover was made thicker than the inner part to protect the contents. In other words, the forded form was generally manufactured to suit the characteristics of maintaining strength by making the paper thick. Because a large amount of indigo paper was needed to make this type of transcription, it is assumed that there were craftsmen who were in charge only of dark dyeing the papers. Usually, paper dyeing requires much more dye than silk dyeing, and dyeing dozens of times would be required to obtain the deep indigo color of the base of the transcription of Buddhist sutra in the Goryeo Dynasty. Unfortunately, there is no record of the Goryeo Dynasty's indigo blue paper manufacturing technique, and the craftsmen who made indigo paper no longer remain, so no one knows the exact method of making indigo paper. Recently, Hanji artisans, natural dyers, and conservators attempted to restore the Goryeo Dynasty's indigo paper, but the texture and deep colors found in the relics could not be reproduced. This study introduces the process of restoring indigo paper in the Goryeo Dynasty through collaboration between dyeing artisans, Hanji artisans, and conservators for conservation of the transcription of Buddhist sutra in the late Goryeo dynasty, yielding a suggested method of making indigo paper.

Re-evaluation of Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee Activities in 1961 (1961년 문화재보존위원회 활동 재평가)

  • The Cultural Heritage Committee is an important organization that has been deliberating on important matters related to the preservation of cultural properties in the Republic of Korea for more than 60 years since 1962. The Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee was active in 1961, which was a short period of about a year, but the minutes prepared at the time confirmed that it had the following meanings. First of all, legally, it was meaningful in that the concept of cultural property or intangible cultural property was used for the first time in Korea in laws and regulations on the term of office of professional members. These matters became the basis for the operation of the current Cultural Heritage Protection Act and the Cultural Heritage Committee. The following confirms that, unlike previously known activities, they were active despite political upheaval at the time. In spite of rapid regime change at the time, the committee had no change in its members, and the meetings continued without interruption. At that time, there was an exclusive relationship between different groups in relation to the preservation of cultural heritage, and this relationship was confirmed by the minutes that disappeared with the establishment of the Cultural Heritage Management Bureau, which integrated these groups. Finally, the form of the minutes prepared then shows the form of documentation at the time, where it is confirmed that the traditional documentation format is changing into a new form. It can be good research material in terms of modern and contemporary bibliography. As discussed earlier, the Cultural Heritage Conservation Committee of 1961 has historical significance in terms of legal and actual activities. The reason why the committee's activities were low valued is presumed to be that the minutes and related documents prepared at the time were not organized well due to the lack of a related administrative system. The minutes of the Cultural Heritage Conservation Committee record various facts about cultural heritage policies and decisions at that time. Therefore, analysis and research on these contents can reveal more facts about the cultural heritage policies and perceptions of that time.

Function of the Korean String Indexing System for the Subject Catalog (주제목록을 위한 한국용어열색인 시스템의 기능)

  • Various theories and techniques for the subject catalog have been developed since Charles Ammi Cutter first tried to formulate rules for the construction of subject headings in 1876. However, they do not seem to be appropriate to Korean language because the syntax and semantics of Korean language are different from those of English and other European languages. This study therefore attempts to develop a new Korean subject indexing system, namely Korean String Indexing System(KOSIS), in order to increase the use of subject catalogs. For this purpose, advantages and disadvantages between the classed subject catalog nd the alphabetical subject catalog, which are typical subject ca-alogs in libraries, are investigated, and most of remarkable subject indexing systems, in particular the PRECIS developed by the British National Bibliography, are reviewed and analysed. KOSIS is a string indexing based on purely the syntax and semantics of Korean language, even though considerable principles of PRECIS are applied to it. The outlines of KOSIS are as follows: 1) KOSIS is based on the fundamentals of natural language and an ingenious conjunction of human indexing skills and computer capabilities. 2) KOSIS is. 3 string indexing based on the 'principle of context-dependency.' A string of terms organized accoding to his principle shows remarkable affinity with certain patterns of words in ordinary discourse. From that point onward, natural language rather than classificatory terms become the basic model for indexing schemes. 3) KOSIS uses 24 role operators. One or more operators should be allocated to the index string, which is organized manually by the indexer's intellectual work, in order to establish the most explicit syntactic relationship of index terms. 4) Traditionally, a single -line entry format is used in which a subject heading or index entry is presented as a single sequence of words, consisting of the entry terms, plus, in some cases, an extra qualifying term or phrase. But KOSIS employs a two-line entry format which contains three basic positions for the production of index entries. The 'lead' serves as the user's access point, the 'display' contains those terms which are themselves context dependent on the lead, 'qualifier' sets the lead term into its wider context. 5) Each of the KOSIS entries is co-extensive with the initial subject statement prepared by the indexer, since it displays all the subject specificities. Compound terms are always presented in their natural language order. Inverted headings are not produced in KOSIS. Consequently, the precision ratio of information retrieval can be increased. 6) KOSIS uses 5 relational codes for the system of references among semantically related terms. Semantically related terms are handled by a different set of routines, leading to the production of 'See' and 'See also' references. 7) KOSIS was riginally developed for a classified catalog system which requires a subject index, that is an index -which 'trans-lates' subject index, that is, an index which 'translates' subjects expressed in natural language into the appropriate classification numbers. However, KOSIS can also be us d for a dictionary catalog system. Accordingly, KOSIS strings can be manipulated to produce either appropriate subject indexes for a classified catalog system, or acceptable subject headings for a dictionary catalog system. 8) KOSIS is able to maintain a constistency of index entries and cross references by means of a routine identification of the established index strings and reference system. For this purpose, an individual Subject Indicator Number and Reference Indicator Number is allocated to each new index strings and new index terms, respectively. can produce all the index entries, cross references, and authority cards by means of either manual or mechanical methods. Thus, detailed algorithms for the machine-production of various outputs are provided for the institutions which can use computer facilities.
