  • This report presents the clinical progress of a 50-year-old male diagnosed with a left acetabular fracture and left rib fracture after falling from a height of 3 m. The patient was treated nonsurgically and underwent complex traditional Korean medicine (TKM) treatment and rehabilitation, including acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, bee venom, herbal medicine, physiotherapy, and moxibustion. Patient progress was assessed using the numerical rating scale (NRS), manual muscle test (MMT), and modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS). During 113 days of hospitalization, the NRS score decreased from 7 to 3, and the MMT grade increased to normal in the hip, knee, and ankle joints. The mHHS score increased from 26 to 99 points. Radiographs and computed tomography scans of the left acetabulum were obtained periodically, and fracture union was successfully achieved. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of complex TKM treatment and rehabilitation of acetabular fractures.

  • In this study, we propose a rehabilitation protocol involving Korean medicine for patients after high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and report its effectiveness. Three patients underwent HTO using the rehabilitation protocol involving Korean medicine. We estimated the outcome evaluating physical examination findings of the knee joint, numeric rating scale, pain disability index, Lysholm knee score, and walking state. After the treatment, we observed that knee movement and muscular strength were improved. In addition, the numeric rating scale, pain disability index, Lysholm knee score, and walking state of patients were improved. Therefore, a rehabilitation protocol involving Korean medicine can be effectively used for patients after HTO. The limitation of this study was the insufficient number of cases and the difficulty of follow-up because of the characteristics of this operation and the long periods of time that are needed for each phase of the protocol. Further studies are needed to design a rehabilitation protocol involving Korean medicine.

Three patients who had undergone distal radius fracture were treated using the rehabilitation protocol in Korean Medicine. We estimated the outcome evaluating physical examination findings of the wrist joint, numeric rating scale and quick the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. After the treatment, we observed that wrist movement, numeric rating scale and quick DASH score were improved. A rehabilitation in Korean Medicine can be effectively used for distal radius fracture patients. The limitation of this study was the insufficient number of cases. Further studies are needed to design a rehabilitation protocol in Korean Medicine.

  • The purpose of this study is to report a clinical progress of fibromyalgia syndrom patient treated by Korean Medicine treatment. The patient was treated with acupuncture, acupotomy, pharmacopuncture (Bee venom, Hwangryun, Hominis Placental), herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping treatment. We measured Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), American College of Rheumatology Preliminary Diagnostic Criteria (ACR, 2010), Fibromyalgia Impact Qustionnaire (FIQ), and observed the change in body temperature using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI). After Korean Medicine treatment, pain was controlled and VAS, ACR, FIQ were decreased. The result showed that Korean Medicine treatment is effective in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The patient was treated with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and moxibustion in combination with Western medicine for around 4 weeks. Although the patient's hemoglobin concentration was maintained at a similar level, the other clinical symptoms of ACD (anorexia, xerostomia, dizziness, and general weakness) were improved after the treatment with Korean medicine. Therefore, Korean medicine treatment may be effective for improving the clinical symptoms of ACD.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics and visiting patterns of traffic accident outpatients Methods : In this study, we reviewed the medical charts of 2,048 traffic accident patients who visited Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine from January 1st, 2012 to December 31st, 2012. Results : In the distribution of gender and of age patients, the male percentage was 52.3% and the majority of patients were in their thirties(47.2%). In the distribution of the patient's initial visit, most patients visited our clinic from Monday to Wednesday. By monthly distribution, the more patients visited the clinic at the latter half of the year. In the duration of treatment, 1,389 patients(67.8%) finished treatment within four weeks. The most frequently cited sites of pain were neck(82.0%), followed closely by low back(74.0%). In the access route, 746 patients(36.4%) visited our traffic accident clinic as a first choice for primary treatment. We referred patients for radiologic examination in 159 patients(7.9%), of which the exams were mainly lumbar spine MRIs(3.6%) and cervical spine MRIs(2.8%). The most frequent diagnosis were herniated nucleus pulposus. Conclusions : This study shows that most of the patients who visited the traffic accident clinic of a Korean Medical Hospital presented neck and low back pain, and the majority showed improvement without surgical treatment. Following the increasing minor injury rate caused by traffic accidents, we expect the role of Korean Medicine Hospital to become more prominent.

  • This case study reports on the effect of Korean medicine on a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) caused by multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. An 83-year-old man diagnosed with stroke had dysuria, and it was found that an indwelling urinary catheter led to CAUTI. From laboratory tests, we identified multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and applied Korean medicine to him. After herbal medication with acupuncture and moxibustion, we studied a urinalysis and urine culture again for follow-up. We found meaningful improvement in bacteriuria and bacterial identification. This case suggests that Korean medicine could have a beneficial effect on urinary tract infections caused by multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

To evaluate the results of this treatment, we used Kupperman's Index and the Numerical Rating Scale to measure heat flashes and total sleeping time, respectively. The patient's general health status was evaluated using the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale. Results: We observed improvements in Kupperman's Index, the Numerical Rating Scale, the patient's total sleeping time, and the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions Scale following the treatments. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may be an effective treatment for menopausal vasomotor symptoms (heat flashes and sleep disorders).
