  • This paper attempts to approximate the distribution function for the number of innovation activities (NIA). To this end, the dataset of 2002 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS 2002) published by Science and Technology Policy Institute is used. To deal with zero NTI values given by a considerable number of firms in the KIS 2002 survey, a mixture model of distributions for NIA is applied. The NIA is specified as a mixture of two distributions, one with a point mass at zero and the other with full support on the positive half of the real line. The model was empirically verified for the KIS 2002 data. The mixture model can easily capture the common bimodality feature of the NIA distribution. In addition, when covariates were added to the mixture model, it was found that the probability that a firm has zero NIA significantly varies with some variables.

  • The technological innovation has been recognized critical factors of productivity of firms and key contribution of improvement of firm performance for a long time. Many researchers have investigated the relationship between R&D investment or patents as a proxy of innovation and productivity. But there were some problem such as lacking of data and ambiguity of innovation definition. So, previous literatures have some difficulty in reliability of analysis for using only survey data. And investigating the relationship R&D and other factors is very difficult. Therefore, this paper tries to investigate and analysis the relationship between innovation and performance of Korean manufacturing firms. Using KIS2002(Korean Innovation survey 2002) which was based on Oslo manual in 2002 and financial data of firms (KISINFO), I will intend to establish the reliability of multiple analysis. In detail, I will investigate whether the innovation input have effect on the innovation output, whether the innovation output have effect on productivity for heterogeneity and what factor of innovation environment have effect on the innovation itself.

  • This paper analyzes the determinants of firm's innovative activity, using Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) dataset. Especially, we focused on the role of external networks by partners(other firms or research institutions) in performing innovative activities. The product innovation, product improvement, and process innovation are used as proxies for innovative activity. The explanatory variables such as market concentration ratio, lagged profitability, foreign ownership, export ratio, firm's age, formal R&D activity, and industrial R&D intensity are also considered. With data from 1,124 firms for the two years (2000-2001), we estimated the logistic regression model. The finding is that the determinants of firm's innovative activities differ by type of innovations. We also found that the innovative behavior of SMEs differs from that of large firms. The result confirms that external networks have a strong positive effect on innovative activity. However, the network effects by partners vary across both firm size and type of innovations.

  • This paper explores the patterns of technological innovation in Korean manufacturing sector in accordance with technology intensity which classifies industries into four sectors; high-technology, medium-high-technology, medium-low-technology and low-technology. Empirical study using Korea Innovation Survey(KIS 2008) data shows that the patterns of technological innovation in Korea exhibits the characteristics of science-based firm described by Pavitt across all industry sectors regardless of the level of technology. On the other hand, overseas studies have found the distinct differences between high-and low-technology sectors; the former is shaped by science-based firm and the latter by supplier-dominated firm. It implies that technological innovation activities in Korea do not reflect the level and/or nature of technology and innovation patterns conform to a single standard of high-technology sector. Further studies on causes and impacts of this inclination would be required for effective technology and innovation policy that fits with the level and/or nature of technology in individual industries.

  • The Korean government provides a variety of supporting programs with firms to promote technological innovation which is a main driver of economic growth. The existing literature on technological innovation has mainly focused on analysis about determinants of successful innovation and effectiveness of a specific policy measure. However, there is no study deals with characteristics of policy demanders. For this, this study investigates the relationship between barriers and policy measures in technological innovation using the logistic regression analysis method with raw data of Korean Innovation Survey (KIS). The findings from this analysis show that barriers of technological innovation are meaningful variables to determining whether firms adopt a policy measure, although there are some differences according to policy types. Cost barriers increased the probability that firms adopt support programs regardless of policy types. Also, the more firms encounter cooperation barriers, the more likely firms utilize supporting programs in regard to technological advice and information.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of factors hampering innovation on firm's R&D cooperation. We classify the obstacles to innovation into lack of money and information, and also distinguish between horizontal cooperation and vertical cooperation. We argue that different obstacles have a differential effect on the types of R&D cooperation. We examined the hypotheses using KIS (Korea Innovation Survey) data. The results show that deficiency of information is positively related to both vertical and horizontal cooperation, however, lack of money is not related to firm's R&D cooperation. Based on these findings from Korean manufacturing firms, the implications of the results and future research directions are discussed.

  • Recent studies focus on how open innovation strategies affect innovation in enterprises, but lack research related to the forms of openness. There is also a paradox that an entity should open up for open innovation but also protect its innovation. In this regard, the need for research on innovation protection has expanded. Therefore, this study looked at the effect of the form of openness on product innovation, and explored how the relationship between the form of openness and product innovation depends on the appropriation mechanisms. This study used data from the Korean Innovation Survey(KIS), which was developed and distributed by the OECD. The main findings of this study are summarized as follows. First, the forms of openness has a positive effect on product innovation. Specifically, external search has had a positive impact on exploitative innovation, and collaboration has shown to have a positive impact on exploratory innovation. Second, the appropriation mechanisms has a positive moderating effect on the relationship between the forms of openness and product innovation. Specifically, it was shown that formal appropriation mechanisms had a positive effect on the relationship between external search and product innovation, and that informal appropriation mechanisms had a positive effect on the relationship between collaboration and exploratory innovation. This study is expected to contribute to: First, this study has divided the forms of openness into external search and collaboration, unlike the existing method, and thus identified the type of product innovation and the appropriation mechanisms and forms of openness by identifying the impact on product innovation. Second, depending on the characteristics of the appropriation mechanisms, it was identified that it had the moderating effect on the forms of openness and the relationship of product innovation, so that depending on the type of openness and the type of product innovation, the type of appropriation mechanisms more suitable was identified.

  • Recently, global competition in the manufacturing sector is driving firms in the manufacturing sector to conduct product innovation projects to maintain their competitive edge. The key points of product innovation projects are 1) what the purpose of the project is and 2) what expected results in the target market can be achieved by implementing the innovation. Therefore, this study focuses on the performance of innovation projects with a business viewpoint. In this respect, this study proposes the "achievement rate" of product innovation projects as a measurement of project performance. Then, this study finds the best strategies from various innovation activities to optimize the achievement rate of product innovation projects. There are three major innovation activities for the projects, including three types of R&D activities: Internal, joint and external R&D, and five types of non-R&D activities - acquisition of machines, equipment and software, purchasing external knowledge, job education and training, market research and design. This study applies decision tree modeling, a kind of data-mining methodology, to explore effective innovation activities. This study employs the data from the 'Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) 2014: Manufacturing Sector.' The KIS 2014 gathered information about innovation activities in the manufacturing sector over three years (2011-2013). This study gives some practical implication for managing the activities. First, innovation activities that increased the achievement rate of product diversification projects included a combination of market research, new product design, and job training. Second, our results show that a combination of internal R&D, job training and training, and market research increases the project achievement most for the replacement of outdated products. Third, new market creation or extension of market share indicates that launching replacement products and continuously upgrading products are most important.

  • This study examines the relationship between firms' external search strategy and their innovation performance. In addition to revisiting the relationship between open search strategy and product innovation, we further extend the impact of use of external knowledge sources to process and organizational innovation. Using the 2010 Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) of manufacturing firms, we report that on average, venture firms search more widely (external search breadth) and deeply (external search depth) across a variety of external search channels than non-venture firms. We then further explore the impact of venture and non-venture firms' use of external search strategies on innovation performance. We find that both searching widely and deeply increase the likelihood of non-venture firm's successes in product, process and organizational innovation. Similar results can be found for the venture firm's success in organizational innovation. However, only searching deeply increases the likelihood of venture firms' success in product and process innovation.
