Evaluation of nutritional status is an essential element in providing appropriate intervention strategies to achieve the highest level of health, Nutritional assessment of the older population is complicated by many factors which do not significantly affect the nutritional status in young adults, therefore, it should be considered in two ways; community-dwelling elders group and hospitalized or institutionalized elderly group. To sort out the individuals with nutritional problems in a community efficiently, nutrition screening tools must be simple, relatively inexpensive, and applicable to a large number of subjects. Combination of tools and indicators such as 24-hour food recall, body weight and height, and questionnaires on eating practices, and the presence of chronic diseases is practically applicable as basic tools of nutritional screening of older age group. However, the lack of validated screening techniques remains a barrier in improving nutrition. Validation is only limited to energy, BMI, protein intake of the older populations living in western countries. Further refinement of nutritional assessment tools is demanded to figure out whether those are practically applicable to community-living older adults in Asian Society. A careful and systematic evaluation of nutritional assessment tools should be carried out prior to implementation of stepwise nutrition service to the heterogeneous older population. For an in-depth nutritional assessment at the individual level, we need to extend research efforts to clarify the requirements of nutrients due to aging and diseases. More cost-effective method that will allow rapid analysis of survey results are needed so that information can be readily available to policymakers.
June 1, 2004, National Emergency Management Agency was established, and one of its aims is to reduce the percentage of accident occurrence and damage scale to that of developed countries in 10 years. In this paper, Korea is compared with Japan in the view of actual conditions of accident occurrence in order to compare Korea with developed countries. In the case .of Korea, traffic accidents, fire accidents, careless accidents, drowning accidents, climbing accidents occur frequently. Decreasing these accidents is a major target to reduce the accident occurrence. Also, home accidents of babies and elders who are unable to avoid dangers are frequent. Studies focusing on those related accidents are required.
Nowadays, social circumstances have changed rapidly due to the decreasing birthrate and increasing number of senior citizens. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate past research for presenting the direction of future research and for improvement of welfare for the elderly. For this study a total of 231 articles within four kinds of major home economics journals are used. The articles were published from 2000 to 2007. Specific research topics (subjects) are investigated for this study. Results from this study are as follows. Research topics are divided into the following fields: facilities for the elderly, family relationships in later life, quality of life, economical aspects of the elderly, physical and metal health, leisure, awareness and the attitudes about elderly people, clothing, death and welfare services for elders. According to this study, 'facilities for the elderly' and 'relationships in later life' are the most frequent topics of interest. Based on the results of this research and the governmental aging society plan, SEROMAZI PLAN 2010, the directions of future research about senior citizens and later life in our home economics major science field are presented.
Purpose: In this study an investigation was done of injuries from inpatient falls and diagnostic tests and treatment after falls to identify what factors affect the occurrence of injury from inpatient falls in a tertiary hospital. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were retrieved for 428 fall events from data reported between January 1 and December 31, 2015 and were retrieved from the patient-safety reporting system in the hospital's electronic health records. A multivariate logistic regression model was developed with STATA 13.0. Results: Of the patients, 197 (46.0%) had physical injuries due to falls, 119 (27.8%) were given further diagnostic tests, and 358 (83.6%) received treatment including close observation after inpatient falls. Logistic-regression results identified that age, department, and risk factors had significant impact on injuries from falls. Conclusion: Findings indicate that to reduce the severity of injury after inpatient falls, each hospital should regularly evaluate identified factors, design fall-prevention practices specialized for elders and vulnerable patients, and initiate environmental and equipment innovations.
The objectives of this study were to determine whether older Americans would provide valid energy intake information using a 24-hr recall method and to determine which characteristics were predictive of under-report of energy intake. We conducted 24-hour recalls on 83 male and 105 female community-dwelling older adults(66-87y) in the USA to assess energy(EI) and nutrient intakes. Basal metabolic rate(BMR) was calculated from age-and gender-specific equations of Schofield. Under-reporting was defined a priori as EI : BMR<0.9. Subjects volunteered demographic information, underwent depression and cognition exams, and completed a Level II Nutrition Risk Screen. Differences between under- and adequate-reporters were assessed using t-tests for characteristics and macro-nutrient profile. Stepwise regression analyses were used to predict under-reporting status. Under-reporting of EI occurred in 34% of the sample. Neither geriatric depression scale(GDS) score, nor self-reported weight loss were related to under-reporting. On average, under-reporters had higher body mass indices. The most significant variables for the main effect to predict the ratio of energy intake to estimated basal metabolic rate(EI : BMRest) were BMI and age. Using a standard cut-off of 76% of the recommended dietary allowances for Americans, under-reporters were consistently more likely to be classified as having inadequate nutrient, as well as energy, intakes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the changes of physical function, perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function, and functional independence in the institutionalized aged according to functional group activity program (self help Tai Chi exercise plus functional task). Methods: Study subjects were 20 institutionalized aged from June to October in 2010. The subjects received functional group activity program two times a week for 15 weeks. Physical function (grip strength, coordination, lower extremity strength, balance, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function(depression, social skill), and functional independence were measured before and after the program. Results: The subjects showed significantly increased physical function (coordination, lower extremity strength, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function (depression, social skill), and functional independence. The functional group activity program may be an effective strategy for institutionalized elders to enhance their functions. Conclusion: The functional group activity program may be effective on elderly institutions which have limitation in human, material, environmental resources.
Background: The purpose of this study is to identify the degree of emotional labor, mental health care, care performance of certified caregivers for elder with dementia, and the factors that affect care performance. Methods: In order to collect data, structured questionnaire was used for 197 caregivers who worked at 3 dementia specialized facilities located in D city. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression using SPSS/WIN 20.0. Results: Care performance had negative relationship with emotional labor(r=-.320, p<.000) and mental health(r=-.240, p<=001). Emotional labor had positive relationship with mental health(r=.208, p=.003) And the prediction factors influencing care performance were health status(${\beta}=.363$, p<.001), emotional labor(${\beta}=-.242$, p<.001), mental health(${\beta}=-.223$, p=.001). The total variance was 38.9% by predictors(F=25.978, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, in order to improve the care performance mental health program should be provided and good health management is needed to improve health status. And also it is necessary to develop and apply new strategies to reduce emotional labor of the dementia facility caregivers.

This study aimed to identify the factors affecting elderly care willingness (ECW) of nursing students. A total of 313 nursing students participated in the study. Data were collected from May to June 2019 using Interpersonal Reactivity Index-Korean version, Semantic Differential Scaling for evaluating attitudes toward elders, Scale of Ageism, and Questionnaire for care willingness toward older adults. Data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression using SPSS 21.0 Program. The factors with the most significant influence on the elderly care willingness was prejudice toward the elderly (β=-.30, p=.001), followed by attitude toward the elderly (β=-.25, p=.004), third year (β=-.23, p=.016), satisfaction with volunteer experience with the elderly (β=-.21, p=.008), satisfaction with nursing major (β=-.17, p=.032), and empathy (β=.16, p=.046). These factors explained 46% of the elderly care willingness. In conclusion, it is necessary to reduce prejudice against the elderly and develop positive attitudes toward the elderly to increase the willingness of nursing students to care for older adults. In particular, further study is required to increase the willingness of nursing students to care for the elderly through developing programs such as curriculums for positive contact experiences with the elderly and volunteer activities for the elderly.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the validity of a depth camera-based system for monitoring physical function, assessing its feasibility for accurately monitoring activities of daily living. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-three participants were enlisted to perform fifteen activities of daily living within a living laboratory designed to simulate a home environment. Activities were monitored using a depth camera system capable of classifying actions into standing, sitting, and lying down, with a conventional video camera employed for activity recording. The duration of each activity, as measured by the system, was compared to direct observations made by a physical therapist which were analyzed using a motion analysis software. The association between these two measurement approaches was assessed through correlation analysis, coefficient of determination, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots. Results: Our findings indicated that standing activities exhibited the highest correlation (r=0.847) between the system measurements and physical therapist observations, followed by sitting (r=0.817) and lying down (r=0.734), which demonstrated lower correlations. However, the ICC and Bland-Altman plots revealed notable variances between the two measurement methods, particularly for activities involving lying down. Conclusions: In this study, the depth camera-based physical monitoring system showed promise feasibility in distinguishing standing, sitting, and lying down activities at home environments. However, the current study also underlined some necessities of enhancements in capturing lying down activities.
The purpose of this study is finding a solution to increase the consumption of Korean cookies by investigating and analyzing the actual consumption patterns, suggestions fur improvement and preferences for Korean cookies. The data fer this study was collected from 358 housewives living in Daegu province. Results show that 77.4% of housewives in this locale eat Korean cookies on a special day such as memorial service day of ancestors, festive day or party. The frequency of having Korean cookies were significantly different due to the income (p<.05): the higher the income, the more often people had Korean cookies. They usually purchase Korean cookies on the market rather than making them by themselves. The percentile of housewives who have never made Korean cookies before was up to 51.7% Only the housewives over fifty had some experience making the Korean cookies. The number of people who teamed the method fur making Korean cookies from their family elders increased according to their age. The reasons why they buy Korean cookies on the market are as follows: the most frequent answer (45.5%) was the price. 34.5% of the responder리s did not know how to make them. 32.1% replied that the process is too complex and troublesome. The most frequent requests for the market was expanding the diversity and improving the quality. In response to why they want the Korean cookies to be inherited. 68.8% of respondents answered that it is traditional culture. 4.01% of respondents replied that `ssalyeatgangung' is their favorite Korean cookie. 3.90% of them like 'sanja' the best and 3.91% of the housewives preferred yakwa to other Korean cookies. This study shows that the most preferred Korean cookies are yeatganjung, yakwa and sanja
