  • This study was to provide the base data on the status of vegetations and soils in green roofs by analyzing the soil and vegetation characteristics of 4 green roofs in Dongguk University in September 2012. Sanglokwon(SW), Dongguk Hall(DH), University Library(UL), and Information and Culture Hall P(IC) were established in 2005, 2008, 2009, and 2010, respectively. The areas of green roofs were $700m^2$, $2,300m^2$, $1,240m^2$, and $640m^2$ in SW, DH, UL, and IC respectively. The investigated floras of vascular plants were 26 families, 55 genera, 65 species in Sanglokwon(SW), 53 families, 99 genera, 112 species in Dongguk Hall(DH), 43 families, 77 genera, 84 species in University Library(UL), and 41 families, 71 genera, 75 species in Information and Culture Hall P(IC), respectively. A positive correlation is shown between the number of plant species and planting area. Total nitrogen, organic matter, and potassium in soil have positive correlation with the number of plant species. The number of plant species was proportional to area and increased more than twice after planting. About a quarter of the invaded plants (including native and naturalized species) were naturalized plants. The total soil depths including vegetation soil and drainage soil at SW, DH, UL, and IC were 20cm, 10cm, 10cm, and 8cm, respectively. The depths of vegetation soil at SW, DH, UL, and IC were <7cm, <3cm, <2cm, and <2cm respectively. The soil pH in vegetation soil ranged from 5.22 to 5.36, and from 6.13 to 6.39 in drainage soil. Available-P concentration ranged from 10.17 to 189.77mg/kg in vegetation soil and from 6.70 to 81.17mg/kg in drainage soil. Carbon concentration in vegetation soil ranged from 2.93 to 9.70%, and 2.93 to 9.70% in drainage soil. Carbon contents in 20cm, 10cm, 10cm, and 8cm soil depths were $2.62kg/m^2$, $1.89kg/m^2$, $0.50kg/m^2$, and $0.53kg/m^2$ at SW, DH, UL, and IC, respectively.

  • We have investigated the effects of the culture broth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) cultured in herb extract on growth, hematological parameter, nonspecific immune responses and disease resistance of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivacells) and parrot fish (Oplegnathus fasciatus) for 12 weeks. Weight gain of olive flounder fed diet with mixture was not significant among the control group. But In parrot fish, was significantly higher 20g than control group. The feed efficiency of olive flounder were 25% higher in the experimental groups than in the control. There were no significant differences in feed efficiency among each group on parrot fish. Treatment of olive flounder contents of GOT and GPT in serum decreased after 8 weeks. But there were no significant differences in GLU and TP among each group. Also, there was no significant of NBT reduction. The activities of lysozyme were higher in experimental group of olive flounder than in the control after 8 weeks. On the other hand, activities of lysozyme were triple higher in the experimental group of parrot fish than in the control after 12 weeks. In the oliver flounder case, the survival rate (%) after an artificial challenge with $10^7$ CFU/ml of Vibrio anguillarum and Streptococcus iniae per fish, was 18% higher in the experimental groups than the control. The higher survival rate of parrot fish were 17% and 16% in the experimental groups than the control respectively.

  • In order to increase the content of germanium in ginseng adventitious roots, the effects of chelating agents on germanium content and root growth were investigated in the submerged cultures of ginseng adventitious roots. Chelating agents such as citric acid, oxalic acid, phosphoric acid, EDTA (Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid) or EGTA (Ethylene glycol-bis $({\beta}-aminoethylether)-tetraacetic$ acid) were administrated in the submerged culture of ginseng root containing 50 ppm $GeO_2$. After 6 weeks of cultivation, fresh weight, germanium and saponin contents in the roots were analyzed. Among chelating agents, addition of 1.0mM phosphoric acid was found to be best for germanium accumulation. Under this condition, germanium content increased 1.4 times as compared to that of the control. The germanium content in the adventitious roots also increased with addition of EDTA or EGTA, while they inhibited the growth of ginseng adventitious root. Citric and oxalic acids were not effective for increasing germanium content in adventitious roots. As the results, it suggests that the phosphoric acid can be proved as the optimal agent for the enhancement of germanium accumulation in ginseng adventitious roots. These results can be served as a guideline for the mass production of ginseng adventitious roots containing germanium by large-scale production.

  • Body fat-reducing ability of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) water extract (OMWE) was investigated of mice by supplying it drinking water. OMWE(2.95% solid content ) was prepared by extracting a low grade of the mushroom at 12$0^{\circ}C$ for 10min. The solid material of OMWE was composed of 65.2% reducing sugar, 0.23% crude fat, 0.5%total protein, 1.2% ash and 32.9% others. OMWE was appropriately diluted with drinking water. Seventy two male ICR mice(25$\pm$1 g, 7~8 weeks of age, 6 mice/cage, 18 mice/treatment) housed in polycarbonate cages containing $\beta$-chips were adopted in a temperature-and humidity-controlled facility with free access to water and diet. One week later, the mice were subjected to one of the treatments for 36days : 0 (control), 10, 50 and 100% OMWE. Drinking wter with or without OMWE was supplied twice (40ml each, 80ml in total ) daily per cage. Body weight and fed intake were recorded every three days. At the end of the experiment, mice were sacrificed to determine the chemical composition (fat, protein, ash and water). Body weight of mice treated with OMWE (10, 50 and 100%) at day 36 was 35.9, 35.9and 35.5g per mouse , respectively, and not significantly reduced as compared to that (36.5g/mouse) of control mice. Average body fat of 0,10,50 and 10% OMWE -treated mice was 14.3, 13.1, 10.7 and 12.0% , respectively. Body fat reduction by 50% OMWE treatment was 25.2% (p<0.05) relative to control. OMWE did not affect feed intake. The contents of body protein and ash were increased with respect to body fat decrease, while water content was not changed much. These results suggest that OMWE could reduce body fat of the mice without body weight change, giving the best effect by 50% OMWE.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effective educational and promotional strategies for the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life on the basis of the survey conducted on parents. First of all, its result showed that most parents are well aware of the main contents of the law. They answered that, when choosing safe favorite food for children, the most important part is the article "Regulations on the standards for children's favorite food should be reinforced." As for the index of safety management for children's dietary life, most respondents think safety the most important; housewives and nuclear family members choose safety (p<.01), while large family members do nutrition. For the question asking how they get the information on safety management for children's dietary life, most of them answered that they generally use mass media, family and friends as a reference. Those with high income usually get the information from special books, those between 30s and 50 from mass media, and those with college graduates from civil social groups (p<.05). In case of taking the safety education programs for children's dietary life, they told that the most necessary information is concerned with hygienic dietary life and nutrition labeling on processed food; housewives are interested in the latter, while working people in the former (p<.05). As a method of informing parents of the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life, mass media such as TV and radio, and school education are suggested in this survey. Therefore, this study proposes that mass media be considered as the most effective way of promoting the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children's Dietary Life and getting information concerning the law.

  • The purpose of the study was to suggest the optimal lipid enrichment conditions used digestive enzyme activity of rotifer changing due to water temperature and salinity. The high population growth appeared at the experiment temperature more than 28 degrees highly on the culture temperature(maximum 32 degrees, 1,453 individual/mL). The fecundity was low at high temperature, and the egg ratio was high at low temperature. Population growth of 10 and 15 ppt appeared in most highly, but the fecundity and the egg ratio were high most significantly appeared in natural seawater(32 psu). The digestive enzyme activity by the culture environment mainly showed high activity in natural seawater(amylase exclusion, 15 psu). However, the TAP activity by the water temperature showed highly at the more high temperature, but the amylase and the lipase appeared at low temperature. We carried out the lipid enrichment at 20 degrees and 26 degrees in a condition of the natural seawater. Total protein, the total essential amino acids differed not significantly. The methionine content that was essential amino acids, a total lipid content, unsaturated index of fatty acids, DHA and the DHA/EPA ratio were high significantly each in $20^{\circ}C$ enrichment trial. Therefore, we could suggest the $20^{\circ}C$ and natural seawater for the optimal lipid enrichment condition in aquaculture, because methionine contents, several indexes by the lipid, TG-lipase activity, fecundity and egg ratio are high.

  • Cultivation of competent manpower is recognized as one of the important factors in the development of fisheries as well as of other industries. For reference to the development of education of fisheries high schools in the Republic of Korea, the author carried out a study on the education in Japan. The reason is why the education on fisheries had been initiated in Japan and her educational system has played the role of a model for neighboring countries. Even though the education on fisheries tends to shrink a little in recent years by diffusing the unwilling tendency to engage in 3D (dirty, difficult and dangerous) jobs, there are fifty-one high schools educating fisheries in Japan. Thirty-eight of them are specialized fisheries high schools and the others are comprehensive high schools to put common course and fisheries course together. In the first step of study, the goal of education on fisheries, organization of department and arrangement of curriculum are analysed. 1. In the newly arranged curriculum which will come into effect from 1994, the goal of education on fisheries is set up as "By educating fundamental knowledge and technology on the production and circulation in the field of fisheries, have students understand the significance and role of fisheries, and so cultivate ability and active attitude to the development of fisheries". The goal means that the circulation of fishery products are regarded as important as the production itself, and active attitude to the development of fisheries is also stressed, different from the present goal. 2. Standard departments directed by the Government are set up as five-Departments of Marine Fishing, of Fisheries Engineering, of Information Communication, of Fish Culture, of Sea Foods. But they are actually organized and named by the founders of schools-local government. Then there are many unique-named departments and the management of schools are somewhat flexible according to the situation of local district. 3. Special subjects are revised to twenty-four in the new curriculum from twenty-two in the present curriculum. Among them the contents are widely revised in the subjects such as Introduction to Fisheries, Fisheries Engineering, Communication Engineering, Communication Technology, Fish Culture. On the other hand, five subjects such as Information Treatment on Fisheries, Information Technology on Fisheries, Subjective Study, Fisheries Economics, Circulation of Sea Foods are newly set up to meet the changing phase of the time.

  • Sweet potato is a crop vegetatively propagated by vine cuttings, an ineffective method for maintaining pathogene-free stock plants. As an alternative method, single-node cultures of virus-free plantlets derived from apical meristem in sweet potato (cv. Yulmi) was examined. Effective pH range, sugar concentration and nodal order were investigated to establish an in vitro mass propagation system with high quality virus-free stock plantlets to farmhouse. Although the plantlets grew at wide range of pH, the most effective pH of the medium was 4.8 in single-node cultures. High sugar concentration of 60∼80 g/L resulted in increased growth response in shoot length, root length, number of node, leaf area and fresh and dry weight of shoot and root, whereas reducing sugar contents below 6% was showed reduced growth response. The first node including meristem tip was the best for the rapid growth of plantlets and the other nodes also showed a very similar growth response. Uniform plantlet can be obtained massively at the same time by culture of single node except for the first node including meristem tip. In conclusion, the most effective pH range and sugar concentration of medium for the growth of plantlets via single-node cultures was 4.8, 60∼80 g/L respectively. The first node was the best for the rapid propagation of plantlets in nodal order.
