Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out proper method for clinical application of acupoints in Bell's palsy patients by using of digital infrared thermographic imaging(DITI). Methods : We investigated 44 cases of patients with Bell's palsy and checked thermal differences between abnormal and normal acupoint sites by using of DITI. Then we drew a comparison between acupoints of DITI and HBGS, ENoG, NET. We used Pearson's correlation for statistical analysis. Results : The HBGS was significantly correlated with ENoG, NET. The thermal difference of ST3 was significantly correlated with HBGS, Lip and Buccal abnormal site of NET. And the thermal differences between ST3 and GB21 were significantly correlated with ENoG, Forehead abnormal site of NET. Conclusions : Severity of Bell's palsy can be evaluated through DITI.

A freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Shiny Bell' was developed for the cut flower in the National Institute of Horticultural Herbal Science in 2012. This hybrid was selected from a crossing between cn. 'Teresa' and 'Rossini', which is white semi-double flowering and red double flowering, respectively. in 2004. Morphological characteristics of the selected hybrid were investigated for 3 years from 2009 to 2011, and then it was named 'Shiny Bell'. 'Shiny Bell' had red color of RHS W155C, and double flower. The growth of the plant was vigorous and the average height was 109.3 cm. The average flower width was 5.8 mm, number of floret per stalk was 11.3, and stalk length was 8.5 cm. The average yield, 7.3 Branches per plant, was 3 stems per plant more than the control cultivar. The average days to first flowering of 'Shiny Bell', was 143.3 days, and it was approximately 7 days later than the control cultivar. The average yield of 'Shiny Bell' was 4.0 cormlets per plant.

Objective: The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of acupuncture and the effect of Dong's acupuncture on Bell's palsy. Methods: We measured the facial palsy changes of the patients who were admitted for Bell's palsy in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dongeui medical center from 07-01-2003 to 09-30-2003. Bell's palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was treated by acupuncture. The other group(B group) was treated by Dong's acupuncture. The effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : B group was marked more higher than A group in treatment outcome. we discovered that it is significant differences between two groups after 2 week. Conclusion : These results provided that A group is more effective than B group on. For clearly comparing the Effect of Acupuncture and Dong's Acupuncture on Bell's palsy, it is need more sample's number and more treatment's duration.

Conclusions : These results provided that A group is more effective than B group. Background: Bell's palsy produces a complex problem that involves not only facial motor weakness, but also psychiatric issues. However, the relationship between facial neuromotor system impairment and psychological adjustment has not been well understood. Methods: We have performed psychological evaluations in patients with acute unilateral Bell's palsy within 2 weeks after onset. Thirty patients with Bell's palsy (10 men, 20 women) were included, who were diagnosed by neurologic examination, electrophysiologic study and/or brain MRI. We measured facial motor scale of impairment (House-Brackmann, HB scale) and psychosocial adjustment [Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)] at the time of initial presentation and 1 month after diagnosis. Results: The age of the enrolled patients ranged from 16 to 80 years. The mean grade of initial and follow up HB scale were 3.87 (SD: 0.63, range 2~5) and 1.77 (SD: 1.10, range 1~5). The mean score of initial and follow up BAI, BDI were 11.93 (range; 0 to 47, SD: 9.65, very low anxiety), 14.73 (range; 0 to 41, SD: 9.21 minimal depression) and 7.5 (range; 0 to 36, SD: 8.58, very low anxiety), 9.33 (range; 0 to 30, SD: 8.19 minimal depression). There was positive correlation between improvement of HB scale and improvement of BAI and BDI score. Conclusions: Bell's palsy is associated with the psychological problems such as depression and anxiety, and the improvement of motor symptom is associated with the improvement of these psychological problems.

Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the effects of admission care on Bell's palsy by case control study. Method : 27 patients who diagnosed as Bell's palsy were shared 13 inpatients group treated by early admission care, and 14 outpatients group. They were equally treated with acupuncture, herb medicine and western medicine. The groups were evaluated by Yanagihara,s unweighted grading system at pre-treatment, after 5 days, after 10 days and after 15 days. Results : The Yanagihara,s scores of 2 groups showed stastically significant improvement in comparison with pre-treatment. In improvement index after treatment, the Yanagihara,s scores of 2 groups increased but were not stastically significant the difference. Conclusion : These results provided that the admission care may not be a valuable treatment for Bell's palsy. Further study is needed to evaluate the effect of early admission care on Bell's palsy.

The conventional blink reflex has limited clinical application since it displays a wide range of change in the responses. Thus, we studied the blink reflex using the averaging process which is engaged in evoked potential studies in order to measure various responses such as latency, amplitude, and duration, which have been difficult to measure due to their wide ranges of changes. Among the Bell's palsy patient group, 13 patients who had the symptoms of incomplete palsy were examined to assess the results of the blink reflex through the averaging process. The subjects were 54 people in a normal group (108 eyes) and 18 patients (36 eyes) with Bell's palsy. For the study method, the conventional blink reflex and the blink reflex using the averaging process were measured for the people in the normal group, while in the Bell's palsy group, only the blink reflex using the averaging process was analyzed. In the case of the normal group, the blink reflex using the averaging process could measure all of the latency, amplitude, and duration. It was also observed that the latency, amplitude, and duration of R1, ipsilateral R2, and contralateral R2 significantly differed on the affected side of the Bell's palsy patients, compared to the unaffected side. The blink reflex using the averaging process should be more effective than the conventional method since the former can evaluate the latency, amplitude, and duration for Bell's palsy, while the latter can only assess latency.

Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the improvement of Bell's Palsy by Yanagihara's System. Methods : Early admission care, western medicine, acupuncture and electrical stimulation was applied to the 22 patients who dignosisd as Bell's palsy. The effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : After 25 day treatment the mean values of the Yanagihara's score($26.90{\pm}9.53$) showed stastically significant improvement in comparison with pre-treatment($8.68{\pm}5.13$). Conclusion : These results provided that the early admission care, western medicine, acupuncture and electrical stimulation is a valuable treatment for Bell's palsy. Further case control study is need to confirm the effect of above treatment on Bell's palsy.

The effect of combined Korean medicine treatment including facial chuna manual therapy was retrospectively investigated in patients with Bell's palsy. There were 16 patients (14 males) who received 2 months outpatient treatment following > 14 days of hospitalization. The Yanagihara score and House-Brackmann grade were used to measure the severity of symptoms and recovery. The patients (mean age 58.5 ± 24.74 years) were categorized based on their medical history of hypertension (n = 10), diabetes millitus (n = 10), or oral intake of steroids early in the diagnosis of Bell's palsy (n = 10). There was no difference between patients who had or did not have a previous history of diabetes mellitus or oral steroid. Both the Yanagihara-score and House-Brackmann grade improved significantly in the total patient sample after treatment (p < 0.001). Combined Korean medicine including facial chuna manual therapy may have a beneficial effect on patient symptoms and recovery.

This study aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of facial chuna manual therapy in treating the sequelae of Bell's palsy. Four patients were treated with facial chuna manual therapy once a week for 4 weeks, consisting of facial muscle massage, acupoint pressure, contracture chuna, and synkinesis chuna. The changes in symptoms (contracture and sysnkinesis) were measured using the Sunnybrook Facial Grading Scale (SFGS), Synkinesis Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), Facial Disability Index (FDI), Contracture/Synkinesis scale using a facial scanning system, Numeric Rating scale (NRS) for synkinesis or contracture, and Was It Worth It questionnaire. After treatments, SFGS, Contracture/Synkinesis scale, and NRS for synkinesis or contracture showed significant improvements. SFGS increased in three cases from 39~76 to 52~85 score. SAQ decreased in two cases from 53.33~57.78 to 40.00~55.56. FDI increased in three cases from 120~128 to 138~145. These results suggest that Korean medicine treatment, including facial chuna manual therapy can be effective in improving the sequelae of Bell's palsy.
