Emission of heavy metals as hazardous air pollutants has been focused with tightening regulatory limits due to their hazardousness. Measurements and characteristic investigations of heavy metals emitted from a commercial power plant burning anthracite coal have been carried out. The plant consists of a circulating fluidized bed combustor, a cyclone, a boiler and an electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in series. Dust and gaseous samples were collected to measure main heavy metals including gaseous mercury before ESP and at stack. Dust emissions as total particulate matter (TPM), PM-10 and PM-2.5 at inlet of ESP were very high with 23,274, 9,555 and $7,790mg/Sm^3$, respectively, as expected, which is much higher than those from pulverized coal power plants. However TPM at stack was less than $0.16mg/Sm^3$, due to high dust removal efficiency by ESP. Similarly heavy metals emission showed high collection efficiency across ESP. From particle size distribution and metal enrichment in sizes, several metal concentrations could be correlated with particle size showing more enrichment in smaller particles. Mercury unlike other solid metals behaved differently by emitting as gaseous state due to high volatility. Removal of mercury was quite less than other metals due to it's volatility, which was 68% only. Across ESP, speciation change of mercury from elemental to oxidized was clearly shown so that elemental mercury was half of total mercury at stack unlike other coal power plants which equipped wet a scrubber.
Fly ash application with a rate 0, 50, 100, $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in clay loam paddy, which had properties of pH 5.3 and low contents of silicate, gave a positively residual effects on the growth of rice crop subsequent to malting barley. The responses of rice yields to fly ash application were in the order of bituminous coal fly ash(BCFA) 100 > 150 > 50 > anthracite fly ash(AFA) 50 > 100 > none > AFA $150Mg\;ha^{-1}$. As a result, yields responses of milled rice were ranged from $6.2(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}14.4%(100Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $-0.6(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}6.6%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA showing maximum yields of 5.084 and $4.738Mg\;ha^{-1}$ by the former and the latter, respectively. Rice plant showed lodging indices ranging from $20(50Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}40%(150Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by BCFA and from $1.3(150Mg\;ha^{-1}){\sim}15%(50Mg\;ha^{-1})$ by AFA at harvesting stage. In especial, soils applicated with BCFA contained a good fertility in terms of pH, available $P_2O_5$ and $SiO_2$, and exchangeable Ca and Mg etc. so that possibly harbored 3yr-residual effects of the fly ash on crop subsequent to this rice.

Fly ash treatment on soil had a strongly positive effect on the growth of soybean. Treatment of fly ash to the soil made soil pH improved and available phosphate content increased. Consequently yield of soybean increased. From germination to early growth stage, growth status and weight of the plant were unfavorably affected by fly ash and its effects on the leaf was quite serious specially in the plots treated with more than 10 MT/10a of bituminous fly ash. However after early stage, plant growth became vigorous in the order of 0 (control plot)<15<5<10 MT/10a. But at the late maturing stage, deteriorative symptoms such as leaf burn and drying were appeared from the plant treated with 10MT/10a and its symptoms were more serious with 15MT/10a. By anthracite fly ash treatment, the plant growth was greatly improved. As a result plant height and dry matter were in the order of 0<5<10<15MT/10a. Grain yield was in the order of 0<15<5< 10MT/10a treatment with bituminous fly ash and 0<5<10<15MT/10a treatment with anthracite fly ash. As a conclusion, recommandable amount of fly ash treatment for soybean would be 5-10 MT/10a with anthracite fly ash and 5 MT/10a with bituminous fly ash.

This study was devoted to the manufacturing process of activated carbon(AC) using and anthracite and bituminous coals which were regarded as appropriate for AC manufacturing, and the physcial properties a AC prepared with coal blends were characterized by the ultimate and proximate analysis. Generally, as the fraction of antheracite in AC from anthracite and bituminous coal blends was increased, AC yield was increased whereas iodine value($I_2$) was decreased. Being not related to mixing ratio of coal blends, the apparent density of AC remained constant. Pore development and iodine value of AC based on coal blends(Fushun and Dandong, 75:25 wt. %) were examined, varing carbonization and steam activation conditions. These results showed that the average pore diameter of AC was below $20{\AA}$ in the activation temperature range of 850 to $900^{\circ}C$ and the iodine value was above $1000m^2/g$. When the adsorption capacity of manufactured AC was compared with commercial AC, it is found that the AC from coal blends was comparable to the commercial AC. Therefore, it was confirmed that the characteristics of manufactured AC were changed with manufacturing conditions and the ratios and types of coal blends.

Recently, several construction projects have been built to create residential area, industrial complex and agricultural land on reclaimed on- and offshore regions. Estimating the quantity of filling materials during reclamation is the most curcial factor of the total construction cost of reclamation project. However, the estimation of loss ratio, defined as the ratio of loss amount to overall dumped amount, mostly depends on the empirical methods and formulae based on the material characteristics due to the lack of sufficient literature about the loss ratio according to hydraulic conditions. In this studies the loss ratio of materials considering flow conditions and material characteristics were examined through hydraulic experiments. A series of hydraulic experiments was conducted using five different hydraulic conditions and two types of materials such as sand and anthracite in a horizontal rectangular flume ($13.0m{\times}5.0m{\times}0.10m$), in which a round type revetment was installed. It is found that the loss ratio generally tends to increase with increasing the particle Froude number regardless of the types of materials. Also, when the flow velocity(u) becomes higher than the critical flow velocity ($u_c$), the loss ratios of sand and anthracite are dramtically increased up to 7.4% and 24.4%, respectively. As a future work, more specific mean velocities will be considered to figure out the loss ratio and more accurate estimation of amount of filling materials will be possible to present with confidence.
The total area of forest land in Korea is 64.2%, and significant forest resources can continuously be produced. However our country didn't separate the recyclable waste wood and was illegal landfill or incinerated. In this study, waste-wood and rice husk of biomass and low-grade-anthracite made refuse derived fuel by mixing and compressing. In addition, the binding effect of binders and additives were analyzed. Physical and chemical characteristics of manufactured refuse derived fuel were analyzed and evaluated suitability by compared with quality standards. A result of change with compressed and relaxed density, added 20% anthracite and 10% rice husk is optimal density change and average density increased large range when 20 wt.% P.V.A., guargum, molasses and 10 wt.% starch were added. All fuel samples be distributed over 3,500 kcal/kg LHV and grade of No. 3~4 fuels appeared. A result of the characteristics of physical and chemical compressed biomass refuse derived fuel with addictive, 12.9% of durability improvement appeared when is mixing asphalt and 5.8% of durability improvement appeared when is mixing rice bran by pretreatment of NaOH 5%.
A small size Fischer-Tropsch Catalyst testing apparatus, designed for an operating pressure of 150 psig, was test fabricated from ordinary schedule 40 iron pipes. The operability of the apparatus was tested by charging the reactor tube with the Lurgi Fischer-Tropsch iron Catalyst and passing through it the water gas obtained by gasifying the Korean anthracite using steam and oxygen. With the kind of catalyst charged, the apparatus was proven to daily produce about 50c.c. of synthetic greasy product, water and water soluble compounds, by running at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ and at a space velocity of 180 volume of gas per volume of catalyst/hr. About 20 consecutive days of operation is claimed to be sufficient for gathering an enough amount of synthetic products for such ordinary tests as distillation analysis, density measurement, iodine value determination etc. This trial fabrication of apparatus may be the first case of its kind in Korea in that the work has been conducted out in much a pilot plant scheme rather than a routine laboratory way which depends on small glass ware apparatus.
The method to decide media sphericity on the filter has been investigated. The sphericity, the ratio of the surface area of an equal volume sphere to the real surface area of the particles, is one of major physical characters of media affecting the bed expansion during backwash. The media in each treatment plant may have different sphericity, and the sphericity of the media in the filter may be changed as backwashing has been conducted regularly for a long time. Media from twelve water treatment plants under KOWACO have been collected and selected to insure various and practical sphericities. The sphericity of each media has been calculated by using well known equations. For example, Kozeny equation, Dahmarajah equation and so on. The experiment results have indicated that the sphericity of each water treatment plant is different. Although the sphericity values measured by different methods were turned out to be diverse values, the order in the magnitude seemed to be the same. The sphericity values of sand media were in the range of 0.71-0.82 and those of anthracite were placed between 0.49 and 0.56 by the Dharmarajah equation.

Direct reduced iron was made using an electric furnace. The reduction ratio of direct reduced iron varied depending on the grade of iron ore. Coal played an important role as a reducing agent in making the direct reduced iron. The coal must contain a suitable amount of volatile components having high calorie values and low impurity content. In this study, oxidized pellets were directly reduced using anthracite as a reductant in an electric furnace. Direct reduction behaviors of hematite and magnetite pellets were confirmed in a coal-based experiment. Reduction behaviors were demonstrated by analyzing the chemical compositions, measuring the reducibility, and observing the phase changes and microstructure. The superior reducibility of hematite pellets can be ascribed to their high effective diffusivity, which is due to their high porosity. The quickly after reducing for 40min and achieves a high value at the end of the reduction.
We have studied that the prediction of desulfurization efficiency by limestone in fluidized-bed coal combustor. The results were presented as follows : Firstly, the bed temperature had a great deal of effect on the desulfurization and the optimum temperature of limestone was 85$0^{\circ}C$~90$0^{\circ}C$. Secondly, as the velocity and temperature increased, $K_{s}$, K and the desulfurization efficiency increased. So, $k_{s}$, $k_{d}$ highly depended on the air velocity and bed temperature, and $k_{s}$, $k_{d}$ were 82.53 mm/sec, 0.0041/sec at 0.2 m/sec, 85$0^{\circ}C$, $k_{s}$, $k_{d}$ were 125.62 mm/sec. 0.00532/sec at 0.3 m/sec, 80$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. And $k_{s}$, $k_{d}$ were 143.78 mm/sec, 0.00568/sec at 0.3 m/sec, 85$0^{\circ}C$. Thirdly, as a result of desulfurization modeling, there was good agreement between theory and experiments as anthracite fraction increased. At 3.0 of optimum Ca/S molar ratio, there was very good agreement between theory and experiments.riments.riments.s.
