According to the simplified Gringorten's method of extreme values from data samples, daily maximum precipitation and return period at several stations in the central part of Korea were estimated. And also, it was known that the distribution of daily maximum precipitation of Sogcho, Chuncheon, Kangreung, Seoul, Inchon, Suwon, Seosan, Cheongju and Daejeon area belong to an exponential type of distribution.
To analyze the regional impact of air temperature increase and precipitation variation on water resources, the variability of precipitation-effectiveness (P-E) ratio which is estimated using precipitation and air temperature data of 59 weather stations operated by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) during 1973~2009 was analyzed. Also runoff data resulting from the Precipitation-Runoff Modelling System (PRMS) modelling were analyzed during 1966~2007. The overall spatio-temporal variability of P-E ratio and runoff data in South Korea is corresponding to the variability of precipitation amount. However some region shows that the P-E ratio decreases even though the trend of precipitation amount increases which may be caused by the air temperature increase. Runoff trend is similar to that of P-E ratio. Precipitation and P-E ratio have decreased all seasons except summer season and it means the reduction of available water resources during those seasons. These variability should be reflected in the spring, fall, and winter water supply strategy.
This study evaluates the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in reproducing the present-day (1981~2005) precipitation over Far East Asia and South Korea. The WRF model is configured with 25-km horizontal resolution within the context of the COordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) - East Asia Phase 2. The initial and lateral boundary forcing for the WRF simulation are derived from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast Interim reanalysis. According to our results, WRF model shows a reasonable performance to reproduce the features of precipitation, such as seasonal climatology, annual and inter-annual variabilities, seasonal march of monsoon rainfall and extreme precipitation. In spite of such model's ability to simulate major features of precipitation, systematic biases are found in the downscaled simulation in some sub-regions and seasons. In particular, the WRF model systematically tends to overestimate (underestimate) precipitation over Far East Asia (South Korea), and relatively large biases are evident during the summer season. In terms of inter-annual variability, WRF shows an overall smaller (larger) standard deviation in the Far East Asia (South Korea) compared to observation. In addition, WRF overestimates the frequency and amount of weak precipitation, but underestimates those of heavy precipitation. Also, the number of wet days, the precipitation intensity above the 95 percentile, and consecutive wet days (consecutive dry days) are overestimated (underestimated) over eastern (western) part of South Korea. The results of this study can be used as reference data when providing information about projections of fine-scale climate change over East Asia.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristic changes of the Changma season in the 2000s. To accomplish this goal, we have used daily rainfall data collected over nearly 40 years (1971 to 2010). The average summer precipitation data including the Changma season were collected from 16 weather stations that are placed across the three major regions (i.e. central region, southern region, and Jeju region) as Korea Meteorological Administration divided. These precipitation data were analyzed to find out characteristic changes of the Changma season. Results of the precipitation data comparison among the major regions that, monthly average precipitation in the central region was the highest in July; its precipitation tended to increase from May to September. In the southern region, the precipitation amount was lowest in June and tended to increase in May, September, and August. In the Jeju region, the precipitation has been the highest in June and July for the past 30 years, whereas September has been highest month in the last 10 years. The precipitation amount in the Jeju region decreased both in June and July, whereas it tended to grow in May, August and September. A correlation coefficient formula by Karl Pearson has been used to find out correlations between the Changma season and the precipitation of the major regions in 2000s and normal years. It was found that the correlation coefficient has decreased from 0.723 to 0.524 in the 2000s (2001 to 2010) compared to normal years (1971 to 2000).
An uncertainty assessment for precipitation datasets simulated by Atmosphere-Ocean Coupled General Circulation Model (AOGCM) is conducted to provide reliable climate scenario over East Asia. Most of results overestimate precipitation compared to the observational data (wet bias) in spring-fall-winter, while they underestimate precipitation (dry bias) in summer in East Asia. Higher spatial resolution model shows better performances in simulation of precipitation. To assess the uncertainty of spatiotemporal precipitation in East Asia, the cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function (CSEOF) analysis is applied. An annual cycle of precipitation obtained from the CSEOF analysis accounts for the biggest variability in its total variability. A comparison between annual cycles of observed and modeled precipitation anomalies shows distinct differences: 1) positive precipitation anomalies of the multi-model ensemble (MME) for 20 models (thereafter MME20) in summer locate toward the north compared to the observational data so that it cannot explain summer monsoon rainfalls across Korea and Japan. 2) The onset of summer monsoon in MME20 in Korean peninsula starts earlier than observed one. These differences show the uncertainty of modeled precipitation. Also the comparison provides the criteria of annual cycle and correlation between modeled and observational data which helps to select best models and generate a new MME, which is better than the MME20. The spatiotemporal deviation of precipitation is significantly associated with lower-level circulations. In particular, lower-level moisture transports from the warm pool of the western Pacific and corresponding moisture convergence significantly are strongly associated with summer rainfalls. These lower-level circulations physically consistent with precipitation give insight into description of the reason in the monsoon of East Asia why behaviors of individually modeled precipitation differ from that of observation.

In this research analyzed the daily precipitation depths of 4 climatic stations in south eastern part of Korea. It aimed to present some indices for regionalization of the area. The items are frequency distributions of precipitation quantity and days and the longest days less than class limit set up by arithmetic differences. The regression analysis between class value and frequency show very good correlation coefficients better than 0.99 which are cubic equation for the precipitation, exponential equation for the precipitation days, and first degree equation for the longest day less than class limit.

The amount and the continuity of the precipitation data used in a hydrological analysis may exert a big influence on the reliability of the analysis. It is a fundamental process to estimate the missing data caused by such as a breakdown of the rainfall recording machine or to expand a short period of rainfall data. In this study the eight methods widely used as methods for estimating are compared. The data used in this research is the annual precipitation amount during 17 years at the Cheolwon station including an ungauged period of 15 years and its five surrounding stations. By use of this certified method the ungauged precipitation values at the Cheolweon station is estimated and the areal average of annual precipitation for 32 years at the Han River basin is calculated.

The waste glass sludge is a waste produced in the glass industry. It is in a dust form and disposed with water. In the disposal process, various cohesive agents are incorporated in order to precipitate the glass particles efficiently. In this paper, we investigate the pozzolanic reaction of the waste glass sludge incorporating precipitation additives experimentally. The consumption of calcium hydroxide, the setting time and the compressive strength and the pore structure were tested for two different types of the waste glass sludge depending on whether precipitation additives were used. It was found that the waste glass sludge incorporating the precipitation additives had a higher pozzolanic potential than the reference waste glass sludge without precipitation additives.
In this paper an attempt is made to explain some of the factors controlling oxygen and hydrogen isotopic variations of precipitation in Pohang by analysing the IAEA data (1961~1976) through statistical correlations and trend observations. During this period, the values of ${\delta}^{18}O$ and D varied widely from -17.80 to +0.07‰, and from -131.9 to +7.7‰, respectively, and fall along a local meteoric water line defined by ${\delta}D=(8.05{\pm}0.32)$${\delta}^{18}O+(12.72{\pm}2.44)$ (n=108, ${\gamma}^2=0.86$). The ${\delta}^{18}O$ and ${\delta}D$ values of the precipitation appear to be little dependent on temperature. Although the amount effect is clearly shown in summer precipitation of 1963 and 1965, the isotopic composition of summer precipitation seems not to be greatly dependent on the amount of precipitation.

Recently, because of the weather forecasts through the low-resolution data has been limited, the demand of the high-resolution data is sharply increasing. Therefore, in this study, we restore the ultra-high resolution synthetic precipitation and temperature data for 2000-2014 due to small-scale topographic effect using the QPM (Quantitative Precipitation Model)/QTM (Quantitative Temperature Model). First, we reproduce the detailed precipitation and temperature data with 1km resolution using the distribution of Automatic Weather System (AWS) data and Automatic Synoptic Observation System (ASOS) data, which is about 10km resolution with irregular grid over South Korea. Also, we recover the precipitation and temperature data with 1km resolution using the MERRA reanalysis data over North Korea, because there are insufficient observation data. The precipitation and temperature from restored current climate reflect more detailed topographic effect than irregular AWS/ASOS data and MERRA reanalysis data over the Korean peninsula. Based on this analysis, more detailed prospect of regional climate is investigated.
