Because stroke prognosis, risk of recurrence, and choices for management are influenced by stroke subtype, correct analysis of stroke subtype is important. Until now, the studies on differentiation of the symptoms and signs for the stroke were a few and the Korean standard differentiation of the symptoms and signs for the stroke don't exist. The data for the analysis of trends in Oriental medicine research was taken from a total 808 articles published in Korean Journal of Oriental Physiology and Pathology from 2004 to 2006. We surveyed the number of authors, the institutes involved in each study, and used languages in each study. Also we seperated by epidemiological study design, the studies into categories and statistical methods into 13 categories. Results showed that descriptive statistics was used in 125(14.4%) papers. Also t-test, analysis of variance, multiple comparison, chi-square test, and non-parametric test were used in 338(38.9%), 147(16.9%), 81(9.3%), 27(3.1%), 23(2.6%) papers, respectively. And 62(7.1%) papers of the involved papers didn't use statistical methods. To improve the quality of Oriental medicine related articles, we have to use proper statistical methods with consultation of statistician or other experts before accepting a manuscript are needed.

  • Traditional medicines usually use combinational formula that are prepared by mixing different varieties of medicinal herbs and boiling them in water to yield a decoction. In recent years a modified method has been proposed and practiced wherein the individual herbs are boiled with water separately and later these extracts are mixed together for use. We attempted to evaluate their equivalence in terms of its polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The polyphenol contents as well as the DPPH radical scavenging activities were very similar to each other.

  • Although the theory of Sasang Consititution is widely used in oriental clinic, there is only conceptual definition about the constitution not technical definition which is consented by every experts. In the present, the effect and different responses of constitutional medicines is the most widely accepted criteria among technical definitions. However, these medicines consist of several herbs which are included specific constitution. So, it is hard to define the characters about the Sasang Constitution through analysis of the medicines. In this paper, we collected the various information about the constitutional herbs, and constructed database and web application for accessing this information. It is useful and can be basis for finding the characteristics of constitutional medicines.

The cases confirmed by diagnosis of medical specialists and residents are 321 cases. They are divided into Qi Defficiency 30.84%, Dampness& Phlegm 25.55%, Fire & Heat 22.43%, Eum Defficiency 18.69% and Blood Stasis 2.49%. We analyzed the markers which classified into the color of tongue body, the color of fur, the quality of fur, the dryness of tongue, the shape of tongue.
