In the satellite remote sensing, the operational environment of the satellite sensor causes image degradation during the image acquisition. The degradation results in noise and blurring which badly affect identification and extraction of useful information in image data. Especially, the degradation gives bad influence in the analysis of images collected over the scene with complicate surface structure such as urban area. This study proposes a multi-stage image restoration to improve the accuracy of detailed analysis for the images collected over the complicate scene. The proposed method assumes a Gaussian additive noise, Markov random field of spatial continuity, and blurring proportional to the distance between the pixels. Point-Jacobian Iteration Maximum A Posteriori (PJI-MAP) estimation is employed to restore a degraded image. The multi-stage process includes the image segmentation performing region merging after pixel-linking. A dissimilarity coefficient combining homogeneity and contrast is proposed for image segmentation. In this study, the proposed method was quantitatively evaluated using simulation data and was also applied to the two panchromatic images of super-high resolution: Dubaisat-2 data of 1m resolution from LA, USA and KOMPSAT3 data of 0.7 m resolution from Daejeon in the Korean peninsula. The experimental results imply that it can improve analytical accuracy in the application of remote sensing high resolution panchromatic imagery.

Followed by that HTML5(Hypertext Markup Language5) was introduced, many kinds of program and services based on this have been developed and released. HTML5 is technical standard specifications for cross platform for personal computers and mobile devices so that it is expected that continuing progress and wide application in the both sides of the academic and the industrial fields increase. This study is to design and implement a mobile application program for overlay rendering with DEM and other geo-based image sets using HTML5 WebGL for 3D graphic processing on web environment. Particularly, the blending technique was used for overlay processing with multiple images. Among available WebGL frameworks, CubicVR.js was adopted, and various blending techniques were provided in the user interface for general users. For the actual application in the study area around the Sejong city, serveral types of geo-based data sets were used and processed: KOMPSAT-2 images, ALOS PALSAR SAR images, and grid data by environment measurements. While, DEM for 3D viewing with these geo-based images was produced using contour information of the digital map sets. This work demonstrates possibilities that new types of contents and service system using geo-based images can be extracted and applied.
High-resolution satellite image mosaics are becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis as an essential image processing to create a large image constructed from several smaller images. In this paper, we present an automatic seamline extraction technique and the procedure to generate a mosaic image by this technique. For more effective seamline extraction in the overlap region of adjacent images, an NDVI-based seamline extraction technique is developed, which takes advantage of the computational time and memory. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) is an index of plant "greeness" or photosynthetic activity that is employed to extract the initial seamline. The NDVI can divide into manmade region and natural region. The cost image is obtained by the canny edge detector and the buffering technique is used to extract the ranging cost image. The seamline is extracted by applying the Dijkstra algorithm to a cost image generated through the labeling process of the extracted edge information. Histogram matching is also conducted to alleviate radiometric distortion between adjacent images acquired at different time. In the experimental results using the KOMPSAT-2/3 satellite imagery, it is confirmed that the proposed method greatly reduces the visual discontinuity caused by geometric difference of adjacent images and the computation time.

In recent times, semantic image segmentation methods using deep learning models have been widely used for monitoring changes in surface attributes using remote sensing imagery. To enhance the performance of various UNet-based deep learning models, including the prominent UNet model, it is imperative to have a sufficiently large training dataset. However, enlarging the training dataset not only escalates the hardware requirements for processing but also significantly increases the time required for training. To address these issues, transfer learning is used as an effective approach, enabling performance improvement of models even in the absence of massive training datasets. In this paper we present three transfer learning models, UNet-ResNet50, UNet-VGG19, and CBAM-DRUNet-VGG19, which are combined with the representative pretrained models of VGG19 model and ResNet50 model. We applied these models to building extraction tasks and analyzed the accuracy improvements resulting from the application of transfer learning. Considering the substantial impact of learning rate on the performance of deep learning models, we also analyzed performance variations of each model based on different learning rate settings. We employed three datasets, namely Kompsat-3A dataset, WHU dataset, and INRIA dataset for evaluating the performance of building extraction results. The average accuracy improvements for the three dataset types, in comparison to the UNet model, were 5.1% for the UNet-ResNet50 model, while both UNet-VGG19 and CBAM-DRUNet-VGG19 models achieved a 7.2% improvement.

Electronic equipment used in satellites are demanding extremely high reliability, so they should be designed to have immunity for some critical faults by using redundancy component. Generally, Communication satellites are assigned to meet the 15 years mission lifetime, of the analysis about faults must be performed to electronic equipments of satellite. This paper is a summary of the fault tolerance design research of command processor, the improvement of reliability and trade-off study of fault tolerance design result. The reliability prediction value of the satellite component used in this research was taken from Koreasat 3 and Kompsat 1. It is important to perform many trade-off studies for fault tolerance design, especially to choose the most proper fault tolerance method for the specified fault scenario.
This study presents a method to restore an optical satellite image with distortion and occlusion due to fog, haze, and clouds to one that minimizes degradation factors by referring to the same type of peripheral image. Specifically, the time and cost of re-photographing were reduced by partially occluding a region. To maintain the original image's pixel value as much as possible and to maintain restored and unrestored area continuity, a simulation restoration technique modified with the Cycle Generative Adversarial Network (CycleGAN) method was developed. The accuracy of the simulated image was analyzed by comparing CycleGAN and histogram matching, as well as the pixel value distribution, with the original image. The results show that for Site 1 (out of three sites), the root mean square error and R2 of CycleGAN were 169.36 and 0.9917, respectively, showing lower errors than those for histogram matching (170.43 and 0.9896, respectively). Further, comparison of the mean and standard deviation values of images simulated by CycleGAN and histogram matching with the ground truth pixel values confirmed the CycleGAN methodology as being closer to the ground truth value. Even for the histogram distribution of the simulated images, CycleGAN was closer to the ground truth than histogram matching.
In this paper, we introduce the SSResUNet network model, which integrates the SPADE structure with the U-Net network model for accurate land cover classification using high-resolution satellite imagery without requiring user intervention. The proposed network possesses the advantage of preserving the spatial characteristics inherent in satellite imagery, rendering it a robust classification model even in intricate environments. Experimental results, obtained through training on KOMPSAT-3A satellite images, exhibit superior performance compared to conventional U-Net and U-Net++ models, showcasing an average Intersection over Union (IoU) of 76.10 and a Dice coefficient of 86.22.
Damage of forest fire should be investigated quickly and accurately for recovery, compensation and prevention of secondary disaster. Using remotely sensed data, burn severity is investigated based on the difference of reflectance or spectral indices before and after forest fire. Recently, the use of high resolution satellite and UAV imagery is increasing, but it is not easy to obtain an image before forest fire that cannot be predicted where and when. This study tried to analyze availability of high-resolution images and supervised classifiers on the burn severity classification. Two supervised classifiers were applied to the KOMPSAT-3A image and the UAV multispectral image acquired after the forest fire. The maximum likelihood (MLH) classifier use absolute value of spectral reflectance and the spectral angle mapper (SAM) classifier use pattern of spectra. As a result, in terms of spatial resolution, the classification accuracy of the UAV image was higher than that of the satellite image. However, both images shown very high classification accuracy, which means that they can be used for classification of burn severity. In terms of the classifier, the maximum likelihood method showed higher classification accuracy than the spectral angle mapper because some classes have similar spectral pattern although they have different absolute reflectance. Therefore, burn severity can be classified using the high resolution multispectral images after the fire, but an appropriate classifier should be selected to get high accuracy.
Precipitation is one of the main factors that affect water and energy cycles, and its estimation plays a very important role in securing water resources and timely responding to water disasters. Satellite-based quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) has the advantage of covering large areas at high spatiotemporal resolution. In this study, machine learning-based rainfall intensity models were developed using Himawari-8 Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) water vapor channel (6.7 ㎛), infrared channel (10.8 ㎛), and weather radar Column Max (CMAX) composite data based on random forest (RF). The target variables were weather radar reflectivity (dBZ) and rainfall intensity (mm/hr) converted by the Z-R relationship. The results showed that the model which learned CMAX reflectivity produced the Critical Success Index (CSI) of 0.34 and the Mean-Absolute-Error (MAE) of 4.82 mm/hr. When compared to the GeoKompsat-2 and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information Using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN)-Cloud Classification System (CCS) rainfall intensity products, the accuracies improved by 21.73% and 10.81% for CSI, and 31.33% and 23.49% for MAE, respectively. The spatial distribution of the estimated rainfall intensity was much more similar to the radar data than the existing products.

The star tracker detects microscopic star light in space and compares it with a stored list of stars to calculate the satellite's position in the inertial coordinate system. If other light, such as the sun or the earth, enters the optical head, the star cannot be recognized and the star tracker cannot be operated. In particular, strong light such as the sun affects not only operation but also the performance of the star tracker. The sun exclusion angle of the star tracker is one of the important factors determining the performance of the star tracker. This paper performs the verification of the star tracker's sun exclusion angle. In order to verify the sun exclusion angle, we predict the sun exclusion time of the star tracker and compare it to the actual sun exclusion time of the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A star tracker. In addition, the performance of the star tracker is analyzed for normal operations against the sun exclusion in the optical head. It shows that the actual sun exclusion is maintained under the range of 26 degrees, the performance requirement of the star tracker, and the star tracker operates normally in spite of the sun exclusion.
