This study was initiated to investigate the essential skill factors for system designers in order to build the right information systems. The predicted variables are mathematical modeling skill, verbal modeling skill, general IT knowledge, and general business knowledge. The test was administrated to 43 students majoring in Management Information Systems (MIS) at Hannam University, South Korea. In this study, we used Pearson Correlation Analysis to test the relationships among variables. Overall, our study suggested that there is a strong positive relationship between mathematical and verbal skills and IS modeling ability. A marginal positive relationship between the general IT knowledge and IS modeling ability was also found. Unexpectedly, there was no significant relationship between general business knowledge and IS modeling ability.

Information systems development entails planning, analysis, design and construction phases. The analysis phase identifying user requirements is the most important of these phases. Since unidentified defects in the early phase causes increased work and costs as development proceeds, the quality of analysis results affects the quality of the resultant system. Major tasks in the analysis phase are data modeling and process modeling. Research on building a knowledge-based system for data modeling have been conducted much, however, not sufficiently for process modeling. As a system environment with high user interaction increases, research on process modeling methods and knowledge- based systems considering such environment are required. In this research, a process modeling framework for information systems with high user interaction is suggested and a knowledge-based system for supporting the suggested framework is implemented. A proposed model consists of the following tasks: event analysis, process analysis, and event/process interaction analysis. Event analysis identifies business events and their responses. Process analysis break down the processes of an enterprise into progressively increasing details. Decomposition begins at the function level and ends when the elementary process level is reached. Event/process interaction analysis verifies the results of process analysis and event analysis. A knowledge-based system for supporting a proposed process modeling framework is implemented in a web-based environment.
Knowledge acquisition is the process that extracts the required knowledge from available sources, such as experts, textbooks and databases, for incorporation into a knowledge-based system. Knowledge acquisition is described as the first step in building expert systems and a major bottleneck in the efficient development and application of effective knowledge based expert systems. One cause of the problem is that the process of human reasoning we need to understand for knowledge-based system development is not available for direct observation. Moreover, the expertise of interest is typically not reportable due to the compilation of knowledge which results from extensive practice in a domain of problem solving activity. This is also a problem of modeling knowledge, which has been described as not a problem of accessing and translating what is known, but the familiar scientific and engineering problem of formalizing models for the first time. And this formalization process is especially difficult for knowledge engineers who are often faced with the difficult task of creating a knowledge model of a domain unfamiliar to them. In this paper, we propose an automated knowledge acquisition tool which is based on an implementation of the Inferential Modeling Technique. The Inferential Modeling Technique is derived from the Inferential Model which is a domain-independent categorization of knowledge types and inferences [Chan 1992]. The model can serve as a template of the types of knowledge in a knowledge model of any domain.
A computer-aided simulation modeling system has been developed to allow the automatic construction of complete discrete simulation models for queueing systems. Three types of knowledge are used in the specification and construction of a simulation modeling: Knowledge of queueing system, simulation modeling, and a target simulation language. This knowledge has been incorporated into the underlying rule base in the form of extraction and construction rule, and implemented via the expert system building tool, OPS5. This paper suggested a knowledge based approach for automatic programming to enable a user who lacks modeling knowledge and simulation language expertize to quickly build executable models.

One of the essential issues in model systems is how to represent and manipulate mathematical modeling knowledge. As the bases of integrated modeling environments, current modeling frameworks have limitations: lack of facility to coordinate different users perpectives and lack of mechanism to reuse modeling knowledge. In this paper, multi-facetted modeling approach is proposed as a basis for the development of integrated modeling environment which provides facilities for (1) independent management of modeling knowledge from individual models; (2) object-oriented conceptual blackboard concept; (3) multi-facetted modeling; and (4) declarative representation of mathematical knowledge. The proposed multi-facetted approach is illustrated using multicommodity transportation models.

Knowledge-based services are largely dependent upon human-driven works. Therefore, considering human characteristics is required when modeling processes for knowledge-based services. As an emerging technology for Business Process Management, Human Interaction Management and its supportive process management can be an alternative to deal with human-driven processes. However, current HIM does not suggest concrete method for modeling conditions that are essential to realize supportive process management. And the condition modeling of HumanEdj, the only HIM software implemented, reveals the problem of complexity. As a solution, this paper suggests a fact-oriented ontological approach to process modeling. The approach uses human-friendly form of facts for condition modeling.
The purpose of this study is to explore ways for students to connect conceptual and procedural knowledge in mathematical modeling lessons. Accordingly, we selected the greatest common divisor among the learning contents in which elementary school students have difficulties connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. A mathematical modeling lesson was designed and implemented to solve problems related to the greatest common divisor while connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the mathematical modeling lesson had positive effects on students solving problems by connecting conceptual and procedural knowledge. In addition, through actual class application, a teaching and learning plan was derived to meaningfully connect conceptual and procedural knowledge in mathematical modeling lessons.

This paper describes IDMS, a graph-based modeling system that supports problem structuring. We employs influence diagram as a problem representation tool, that is, a modeling tool. In particular, IDMS is designed as domain-independent shell. Therefore, a modeler can change the contents of the knowledge base to suit his/her own interested domain. Since the knowledge base of IDMS contains both modeling knowledge and domain knowledge, IDMS provides not only the syntactic support for modeling tool, but also the semantic support for problem domain. To apply the method in the real world context, we tested IDMS on the process selection problem in business reengineering, which is typical semi-structured problem.

The purpose of this study was to explore changes in elementary teachers' modeling pPCK (personal PCK) resulting from knowledge exchange within the realms of PCK described in the Refined Consensus Model (hereafter RCM). For this purpose, a professional learning community (hereafter PLC) was established for three elementary school teachers to facilitate knowledge exchange specifically focused on science modeling instructions. The study then analyzed the CoRe (content representations) written by the research participants twice to explore any changes in modeling pPCK (personal PCK). In addition, the discourse shared by the participants in the PLC and the data from the in-depth interviews were also analyzed using grounded theory research methods. The results of the study showed that there was no significant change in knowledge of the science curriculum in elementary teachers' modeling pPCK, but there were changes in orientations toward teaching science, knowledge of students' understanding in science, knowledge of instructional strategies and representations, and knowledge of assessment of science learning. Furthermore, the analysis of PLC discourse and in-depth interviews showed that modeling instructions reflection (ePCK; enacted PCK) and educational research-based modeling cPCK (collective PCK) influenced these changes in teachers' modeling pPCK. Accordingly, this study suggests recommendations for pedagogical approaches aimed at improving teachers' modeling PCK.
Knowledge has become an important resource for organization. The manufacturing industry is usually operated on the basis of business processes, and most workers are familiar with their own processes. The process-based approach, therefore, can provide an efficient way to capture and navigate knowledge. In this study, we focus on knowledge which may be missed during knowledge transfer among workers. For this, we propose a method for analyzing knowledge flow, which is passed among business processes. We propose a process-based knowledge management framework for analyzing knowledge flow, which employs a two-phase analysis: process analysis and knowledge flow analysis. A knowledge flow model, represented by Knowledge Flow Diagram, is proposed as a tool for representing knowledge. We formulate several semantics for knowledge flow modeling. We build the three-level schema: conceptual, logical, and physical in order to automate the knowledge model adaptive to knowledge management systems. The proposed approach is verified and illustrated through a case study on the manufacturing process of A Company.
