  • Demand and interest in electric vehicles are increasing rapidly due to environmental issues. Improving the performance of electric vehicles requires the development of automotive batteries and battery joining technologies. Aluminum alloys are the most widely used metals in the electric vehicle industry, and aluminum bonding is used in all processes comprising automotive batteries. Therefore, in this paper, based on the characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys and knowledge of various aluminum joining technologies, the main and the next generation bonding technologies used in automotive battery are reviewed. It also explains the structure of automotive secondary battery cells and the integration order of 'cell-module-pack' where joining is used in the process, also various environmental conditions that must be considered when joining.

  • Although the installation of droplet protection screen (DPS) is known to prevent droplet transmission, there is still a lack of knowledge in effectiveness of DPS installation to block the airborne transmission. In this study, the prevention ability of DPS against airborne transmission was evaluated according to the DPS height. When the DPS was not installed, the maximum concentration of PM1.0 at the location opposite to infected person was 35% of that at the infected person location. When the DPS was installed, the DPS effectively prevented the airborne transmission, consequently approximately 7% of generated particles were measured at the opposite location from particle generation position (infected person location). The prevention ability of DPS increased with DPS height, the maximum prevention efficiency of 95.1% was obtained when the DPS height was 900mm. Moreover, the speed of airborne transmission was delayed by installation of DPS, and the delay time increased with DPS height.

  • Objective: The objective of the study was to understand and document socio-economic characteristics, production parameters, challenges and management practices used by Fijian households which keep indigenous chickens. Methods: A survey involving 200 households was carried out in coastal and inland communities of Fiji's wet and semi-dry ecoregions. Data on the influence of ecoregion and location of households relative to the sea on management practices, challenges and productivity of indigenous chickens were analyzed using logistic regression and general linear model of SAS software. Results: Irrespective of location relative to the sea and ecoregion, households indicated that they kept indigenous chickens for food and income generation. The Welsummer was the most (p>0.05) preferred breed. Households in the semi-dry inland communities had the largest (p<0.05) flocks compared to those in semi-dry coastal communities and the wet region. Chickens in the semi-dry region performed better (p<0.05) than those in the wet region in terms of number of clutches per year and mature live weight. Predators and feed shortages were the biggest challenges faced by households in all areas. The mongoose was ranked as the most (p>0.05) common predator followed by domestic dogs. Most households in the wet ecoregion's coastal communities housed their chickens at night, whereas communities in semi-dry ecoregion housed their chickens most of the time (p<0.05). In all regions, no households sold their chickens to commercial markets (p>0.05). Households in semi-dry ecoregion were more likely (p>0.05) to sell their chickens at the local market place. Conclusion: The productivity of local chickens in Fiji is low because of feed shortage, predators such as the mongoose and lack of market linkages.

  • Licensing the next-generation of nuclear reactor designs requires extensive use of Modeling and Simulation (M&S) to investigate system response to many operational conditions, identify possible accidental scenarios and predict their evolution to undesirable consequences that are to be prevented or mitigated via the deployment of adequate safety barriers. Deep Learning (DL) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support M&S computationally by providing surrogates of the complex multi-physics high-fidelity models used for design. However, DL and AI are, generally, low-fidelity 'black-box' models that do not assure any structure based on physical laws and constraints, and may, thus, lack interpretability and accuracy of the results. This poses limitations on their credibility and doubts about their adoption for the safety assessment and licensing of novel reactor designs. In this regard, Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) are receiving growing attention for their ability to integrate fundamental physics laws and domain knowledge in the neural networks, thus assuring credible generalization capabilities and credible predictions. This paper presents the use of PINNs as surrogate models for accidental scenarios simulation in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). A case study of a Loss of Heat Sink (LOHS) accidental scenario in a Nuclear Battery (NB), a unique class of transportable, plug-and-play microreactors, is considered. A PINN is developed and compared with a Deep Neural Network (DNN). The results show the advantages of PINNs in providing accurate solutions, avoiding overfitting, underfitting and intrinsically ensuring physics-consistent results.

  • The next generation sequencing has significantly contributed to clarify the genome structure of many species of zootechnical interest. However, to date, some portions of the genome, especially those linked to a heterogametic nature such as the Y chromosome, are difficult to assemble and many gaps are still present. It is well known that the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is an excellent tool for identifying genes unequivocably mapped on chromosomes. Therefore, FISH can contribute to the localization of unplaced genome sequences, as well as to correct assembly errors generated by comparative bioinformatics. To this end, it is necessary to have starting points; therefore, in this study, we reviewed the physically mapped genes on the Y chromosome of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, horses and alpacas. A total of 208 loci were currently mapped by FISH. 89 were located in the male-specific region of the Y chromosome (MSY) and 119 were identified in the pseudoautosomal region (PAR). The loci reported in MSY and PAR were respectively: 18 and 25 in Bos taurus, 5 and 7 in Bubalus bubalis, 5 and 24 in Ovis aries, 5 and 19 in Capra hircus, 10 and 16 in Sus scrofa, 46 and 18 in Equus caballus. While in Vicugna pacos only 10 loci are reported in the PAR region. The correct knowledge and assembly of all genome sequences, including those of genes mapped on the Y chromosome, will help to elucidate their biological processes, as well as to discover and exploit potentially epistasis effects useful for selection breeding programs.

  • This study aims to understand public perceptions of aging Korean society and related factors in the context of population aging and generational difference. Data are from 1,498 individuals older than 20 who were recruited through the quota sampling technique. Results indicated that the respondents reported less then three as the number of positive aspects of aging Korean society. Among the factors related to population aging, such as knowledge about aging, perceptions about family care, anxiety about later life, and perspectives about generational conflict, anxiety about later life was shown to be negatively associated with perception of aging Korean society across age groups. Respondents 65 and older showed more positive perception about aging Korean society and this association was conditioned by perspectives about generational conflict. Perspectives about generational conflict revealed positive associations with perception of aging Korean society among respondents aged 20-44 and 45-64, while no association was found among those 65 and older. Discussions focused on ways to alter perceptions of aging Korean society and needs for future research on this topic.

  • In general, the implementation of machine learning requires prior knowledge and experience with deep learning models, and substantial computational resources and time are necessary for data processing. As a result, machine learning encounters several limitations when deployed on embedded processors. To address these challenges, this paper introduces a novel approach where a genetic algorithm is applied to the convolution operation within the machine learning process, specifically for performing a selective convolution operation. In the selective convolution operation, the convolution is executed exclusively on pixels identified by a genetic algorithm. This method selects and computes pixels based on a ratio determined by the genetic algorithm, effectively reducing the computational workload by the specified ratio. The paper thoroughly explores the integration of genetic algorithms into machine learning computations, monitoring the fitness of each generation to ascertain if it reaches the target value. This approach is then compared with the computational requirements of existing methods. The learning process involves iteratively training generations to ensure that the fitness adequately converges.
