The results show that, from the perspective of hardware, facilities and size should be setup according to the condition in Korea and long-tenn demands for green tourism Adequate size of lodging facility, a cottage, should accompany the garden. More attention should be paid for the management of Kleingarten. In addition, from the perspective of software, Administration should make an effort to obtain the understanding and cooperation from the local residents. It turns out that a Kleingarten takes an important role when urban residents move into rural areas or carry out a multi-habitation. Barrier-free design for cottages is also needed.

  • In recent years in Japan, derelict land by aging fanners has increased at the same time as the desire of city dwellers for a more natural, leisurely lifestyle. In response, an increasing number of citizens' farms(or 'allotment gardens') have opened in and around urban areas. Citizens' farms with overnight accommodation are known as 'kleingartens'. As a case study, we evaluated a kleingarten in the town of Suo-oshima by interviewing the resident caretaker and conducting a questionnaire survey of facility users. Our survey revealed a number of ways in which the facility could be improved to meet user needs. The case study also suggested that kleingartens are an effective means of revitalizing local communities in rural areas.

First, a standard regulation for the application and management of users in KG should be established as soon as possible. Second, the exchange between users in KG and local residents around KG should be activated in terms of well organized exchange program. Third, a sufficient budget by public sectors or an economic scheme where private sectors can participate in this program should be arranged. Lastly, a use of post occupancy should be well managed by user themselves in KG and well monitored by supervisor of KG simultaneously.
