  • Nuclear medicine imaging has an unique advantage of absolute quantitation of radioactivity concentration in body. Tracer kinetic analysis has been known as an useful investigation methods in quantitative study of in-vivo physiological function. The use of nuclear medicine imaging and kinetic analysis together can provide more useful and powerful intuition in understanding biochemical and molecular phenomena in body. There have been many development and improvement in kinetic analysis methodologies, but the conventional basic concept of kinetic analysis is still essential and required for further advanced study using new radiopharmaceuticals and hybrid molecular imaging techniques. In this paper, the basic theory of kinetic analysis and imaging techniques for suppressing noise were summarized.

  • A kinetic assay was carried out in order to compare the ability of detection for prekallikrein activator(PKA) in plasma-derived products with that of an endpoint assay and a commercial method. Using these methods, 9 human albumin preparations were assayed and compared to each other. The coefficient of variation between the Kinetic assay and the end point assay was found within 6.6% and this result showed that two methods were highly correlative and the end point assay could act as a replacement of the kinetic assay. Another important goal of this study was to investigate the reproducibility among laboratories on the kinetic assay. A collaborative study was performed to validate the kinetic method with intra and inter assays. The coefficient of variation for the intra assay of each laboratory was less than 4% and that for between individuals in the inter assay was 4.1%. These results revealed that the kinetic assay showed good reproducibility. The contents of PKA in plasma-derived products were also determined by the kinetic assay. As a result, it was found that trace amounts of PKA were present in 32 human immunoglobulin preparations, however the average concentration of PKA in 171 albumin preparations was 5.8 IU/mL.

  • A particular empirical equation for rainfall kinetic energy is needed to compute rainfall erosivity, calculated by the annual sum of the product of total rainfall energy and maximum 30-min rainfall intensity. If rainfall kinetic energy equation was different, rainfall erosivity will be produced differently. However, the previous studies in Korea had little concern about rainfall kinetic energy equation and it was not clear which rainfall kinetic energy is suitable for Korea. The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the difference of the rainfall erosivity based on different rainfall kinetic energy equations obtained from previous studies. This study introduced new rainfall erosivity factors based on rainfall kinetic energy equation of Noe and Kwon (1984) that is only regression model developed in Korea. Data of annual rainfall erosivity for 21 weather stations in 1980~1999 were used in this study. The result showed that rainfall erosivity factors by the previous equations had been about 10~20% overestimated than rainfall erosivity by Noe and Kwon (1984)'s equation in Korea.

  • In the present study, a flow solver using a kinetic BGK scheme was developed for the compressible Navier-Stokes equation. The kinetic BGK scheme was used to simulate flow field from the continuum up to the transitional regime, because the kinetic BGK scheme can take into account the statistical properties of the gas particles in a non-equilibrium state. Various numerical simulations were conducted by the present flow solver. The laminar flow around flat plate and the hypersonic flow around hollow cylinder of flare shape in the continuum regime were numerically simulated. The numerical results showed that the flow solver using the kinetic BGK scheme can obtain accurate and robust numerical solutions. Also, the present flow solver was applied to the hypersonic flow problems around circular cylinder in the transitional regime and the results were validated against available numerical results of other researchers. It was found that the kinetic BGK scheme can similarly predict a tendency of the flow variables in the transitional regime.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of close kinetic chain resistant exercise of lower extremity on the gait with stroke patients. METHODS: The subjects were 50 patients who were diagnosed with cerebrovascular accident. They were randomly assigned either to a close kinetic chain resistant exercise of lower extremity group (study group)(n=25) or open kinetic chain resistant exercise of lower extremity exercise group (control group)(n=25). Gait abilities were measured by using Timed Up & Go (TUG) test, Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) and spatio-temporal gait variable that were velocity, cadence, stride length, double limb support by 3 axises wireless accelerometer and sway angle of center of mass by same instrument. RESULTS: Study group and control group before and after the intervention there were significantly difference in TUG, FGA, spatio-temporal gait variables and sway angle of center of mass (p<.05). There were significantly different between study group and control group for all variables at post-exercise. CONCLUSION: When all is said and done it is expected to be used as a method for the treatment and prevention in the process of rehabilitation of patients with stroke. In its final analysis when applying resistant exercise of lower extremity to stroke patients' gait, close kinetic chain is more effective than open kinetic chain.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of present study was to ascertain how the activity of the serratus anterior muscle, the upper trapezius muscle and the pectoral major muscle was affected while the upper arm was being flexed at 70, 90 and 110 degrees respectively in a closed kinetic chain exercise (wall push up plus) and an open kinetic chain exercise (static hug). METHODS: Sixteen healthy young men subjects participated in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) data were collected from the dominant-side muscles during a closed kinetic chain exercise and an open kinetic chain exercise. The activity of each muscle was measured quantitatively, and by the use of the two-way repeated ANOVA, the data were compared with each other according to exercises and shoulder flexion angles. RESULTS: Results indicated that the closed kinetic chain exercise did not interact with the open kinetic chain exercise (p>.05). In both the closed kinetic chain exercise and the open kinetic chain exercise, the activity of the serratus anterior muscle became different significantly according to angles (p<.05). Its activity increased in order of 70, 90 and 110 degrees (p<.05). In both exercises and all angles, muscle activity was significantly higher in the serratus anterior muscle than in the upper trapezius muscle and the pectoral major muscle (p<.05). CONCLUSION: The above results show that there is a need to selectively control the exercise stress of the serratus anterior muscle in the case of the patients with the shoulder impingement syndrome characterized by the winged scapula, insufficient scapular protraction and upward rotation.

  • The adsorption kinetic study of ruthenium complex, N3, onto nanoporous titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photoanodes has been carried out by measuring dye uptake in-situ. Three simplified kinetic models including a pseudo first-order equation, pseudo second-order equation and intraparticle diffusion equation were chosen to follow the adsorption process. Kinetic parameters, rate constant, equilibrium adsorption capacities and related coefficient coefficients for each kinetic model were calculated and discussed. It was shown that the adsorption kinetics of N3 dye molecules onto porous $TiO_2$ obeys pseudo second-order kinetics with chemisorption being the rate determining step. Additionally the heterogeneous surface and the pore size distribution of porous $TiO_2$ adsorbents were also discussed.

  • Background: Repetitive damage to the ankle joint causes chronic ankle instability, and studies comparing the effects of exercise in open and closed chains as a treatment method are very rare. Objectives: To investigate the effects of open and closed kinetic exercises on muscle activity and dynamic balance of ankle joint in adults with chronic ankle instability. Design: Single-blind randomized controlled trial. Methods: The selected 30 subjects are randomly divided into open kinetic chain exercise experimental group (EGI, n=10), closed kinetic chain exercise experimental group (EGII, n=10), and stretching control group (CG, n=10). Open and closed kinetic exercises lasted 30 minutes three times a week for six weeks and stretching exercises performed four actions for 20 seconds and five sets. The measurement tools using surface electromyography to measure muscle activity in the ankle joint. The dynamic balance of the ankle was evaluated using the Y-Balance test. Results: Following the intervention, closed and open kinetic chain exercise group showed significant difference in tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle activity and dynamic balance (P<.05). However, no significant difference in tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle activity and dynamic balance between closed and open kinetic chain exercise group (P<.05). Conclusion: This study provides evidence that closed and open kinetic chain exercise can be presented as an effective exercise for the muscle activity of ankle muscle and dynamic balance of the subject with chronic ankle instability.
