Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of oral hygiene education provided by dental hygienists in patients with dental implants. Methods: Data were obtained from a survey that involved 300 patients who had one or more dental implants. Based on the calculated sample size (n = 274), 300 questionnaires were used for further analyses. Results: The patients who received oral hygiene education had higher levels of satisfaction after dental implant surgery (p<0.05). Patients who had repeated educational sessions, in the form of interactive or hands-on sessions or lectures, with continuous feedback had higher scores for oral hygiene maintenance (p<0.05). Conclusions: This study indicated that patients who received oral hygiene education, in the form of interactive or hands-on sessions or lectures, with continuous post-educational feedback were better at maintaining oral hygiene.

We have identified TMPRSS6, a novel type 2 transmembrane serine protease. TMPRSS6 possesses all the signature motifs of the family of transmembrane serine proteases (TMPRSSs), including a transmembrane domain, an LDL receptor class A (LDLRA) domain, a scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) domain, and a serine protease domain. The substrate specificity of TMPRSS6 is slightly different from those of other TMPRSS family members. Combined with the finding that TMPRSS6 is expressed strongly in the thyroid and weakly in the trachea, this may indicate that TMPRSS6 has a specialized role.

We evaluated the biological activities of five water extracts of tissue of the mottled anemone Urticina crassicornis. Most extracts exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity as determined by ultrasensitive radial diffusion assay (URDA) against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, including a fish pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila, but no activity against fungi. The activity of the extracts was abolished by tryptic digestion, indicating that protein compounds were responsible for the antimicrobial activity. Furthermore, in a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical-scavenging activity assay, only the visceral tissue extract showed activity. However, no extract had hemolytic activity against human red blood cells. Consequently, this study suggests the water-soluble extract of mottled anemone to be a promising source of proteinaceous antimicrobial compounds that can be utilized for development of novel antibiotics.

A rapid, sensitive and selective liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC/MS/MS) method for the determination of eupatilin in human plasma was developed. Eupatilin and internal standard, (S)-[N-3-(4-(2-(1-methyl-5-tetrazolyl)-pyridine-5-y1)- 3-fluorophenyl)-2-oxo-5-oxazolidinyl]methyl acetamide (DA-7867) were extracted from human plasma by liquid-liquid extraction and analyzed on a phenyl-hexyl column with the mobile phase of acetonitrile-ammonium formate (10 mM, pH 3.0) (60:40, v/v). Caudal occipital malformation syndrome (COMS) is relatively common disease which occurs at craniocervical junction. It has been known that this syndrome was developed mainly in Cavalier King Charles spaniels, but these days there are a lot of case reports about COMS in other small breed dogs. In this report, COMS was diagnosed in ten dogs presented to Haemaru Referral Animal Hospital using MRI examination from January 2005 to April 2006. These cases were also investigated about concurrent diseases and syringomyelia was the most common type of complication, but clinical signs were nonspecific. COMS could be controlled by medical therapy with corticosteroid except cases with concurrent meningitis. It is considered that the present report could provide information regarding imaging and clinical features of COMS such as concurrent diseases, clinical signs, and prognosis in small animal practice despite of limited case numbers.
