  • The rheological properties of exopolysaccharide, p-KG03, produced by marine microalgae Gyrodinium impudicum strain KG03 had been studied. The intrinsic viscosity of this p-KG03 was calculated to 65.22 and 50.75 $d{\ell}/g$ using Huggins and Kramer equations (xanthan gum 24.41 and 24.03). Aqueous dispersions at p-KG03 concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 % (w/w) showed marked shear-thinning properties as Power-Law behavior. In aqueous dispersions of p-KG03 1.0 %, consistency index (K) and flow behavior index (n) were 2,172 and 0.52. The apparent viscosity and the influence of shear rate on different conditions as p-KG03 concentrations, pH, NaCl, $CaCl_2$ and temperature in aqueous solutions were measured. And p-KG03 had mixed with aqueous solutions of xanthan gum and gellan gum, and invested the change of mixed aqueous solution behavior.

  • Young goats were fed low quality roughage ad libitum and supplements of insect-damaged Lablab purpureus (var. Highworth) seed fed at approximately 3, 6 or 12 g/kg liveweight (LW), or sweet lupin seed (Lupinus angustifolius var. Uniharvest) fed at 12 g/kg LW. Roughage intake was not changed by 3 or 6 g/kg LW levels of Lablab or by 12 g/kg LW lupin supplement, but was reduced (p<0.05) by 35% by 12 g/kg LW Lablab supplement. Organic matter (OM) digestibility was increased by all supplements, and digestible OM intake was increased by the 6 g/kg LW Lablab and 12 g/kg LW lupin supplements. LW gain and feed conversion ratio were not changed by 3 or 6 g/kg LW Lablab or the 12 g/kg LW lupin, but were reduced (p<0.05) by 12 g/kg LW Lablab supplement. It was concluded that young goats could efficiently utilize supplements of Lablab purpureus seed fed at levels of up to 6 g/kg LW. However, when 12 g/kg of the Lablab seed was fed, poor performance suggested that the goats were adversely affected by anti-nutritional factors which were not neutralized by rumen fermentation.

  • This study was carried out to determine the levels of lead and cadmium as found in nine agricultural products (n = 578) sold in Korea, and to estimate the risk to human health that is summarily associated with their intake. The concentrations of Pb and Cd were measured using an ICP-MS after microwave digestion in this study. The average contents of Pb and Cd were measured as 0.014 and 0.017 mg/kg for barley, 0.006 and 0.005 mg/kg for mung bean, 0.008 and 0.007 mg/kg for kidney bean, 0.010 and 0.004 mg/kg for green bean, 0.008 and 0.001 mg/kg for pineapple, 0.016 and 0.002 mg/kg for apricot, 0.015 and 0.002 mg/kg for Japanese apricot, 0.021 and 0.002 mg/kg for plum and 0.019 and 0.003 mg/kg for jujube, respectively. The levels of Pb and Cd in the study samples were less than the maximum residual levels established by the European Union (EU), CODEX, and the Korea Food Code. As we have seen, the daily dietary exposures of Pb and Cd from these agricultural products for the general population were noted as 0.067% of PTWI ($25{\mu}g/kg$ b.w./week) and 0.28% of PTMI ($25{\mu}g/kg$ b.w./month), respectively. In line with the study conclusions, these results suggest that the current dietary intakes of Pb and Cd from these agricultural products in Korea have no appreciable risk effects on health for humans as noted in this experiment.

  • This study was conducted from March 21 to July 7 in 2004 at JeJu Island to investigate the influences of seed-ing rates (4, 6, 5, 10 and 12 kg/10a) on creeping bentgrass vegetation. The result obtained were summarized as follows; plant height was getting longer as seeding rate increased from 4 to 12 kg/10a, Although it was no significance from 10 to 12 kg/10a. Root length, Minolta SPAD-502 chlorophyll reading value, leave and root weight increased as the plant height increased. The degree of land cover and density of creeping bentgrass also increased as seeding rate increased from 4 to 12 kg/10a, and the degree of land cover and density of weed decreased. The number of weed species on decreased as increasing of seeding rate. Then ranking of the dominant weeds were Digitaria adscendens, Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum md Poa annua (at 4 kg/10a seeding rate), Digitaria adscendens, Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum and Stellaria media (at 6 kg/10a seeding rate). Chenopdium album var. centrorubrum, Poa annua and Digitaria adscendens (at 8 kg/10a seeding rate), Digitaria adscendens, Chenopdium album var. centrorubrum and Steilaria media (at 10 kg/10a seeding rate), Chenopdium album var. centrorubrum, Digitaria adscendens and Stellaria media (at 12 kg/10a seeding rate). These results showed that the optimum seed-ing rate is 10 kg/10a for growth of creeping bentgrass in volcanic ash soils of Juju island.
