  • According to previous studies, the key factor in determining the loan interest rate for shipping companies is the default risk premium. Therefore, this study analyzes the determinants of the risk premium of shipping loans using a multiple linear regression model. With the risk premium as the dependent variable, a total of 10 independent variables are selected, including three factors: loan characteristics, borrower's creditworthiness, and economic situation. Samples are 82 shipping loans supported by Bank A from 2014 to 2022. As a result, borrower's creditworthiness(current ratio, debt ratio, firm age) and economic situation(freight index) affect the risk premium in analysis for all samples. It is found that borrower's creditworthiness has some influence on the risk premium for container ships(current ratio, cash holding ratio, debt ratio, operating income to sales) and bulk carriers(debt ratio, firm age). Market situation affects the risk premium in gas carriers. However, in the model targeting tanker ships, unlike previous studies, all factors have no effect on the risk premium.

  • This study examines the impact of the changes to the port logistics before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the study focuses on analyzing the changes to Korea's container ports network. Furthermore, this study examines the influence of the ports in the container port network before and after the COVID-19 Pandemic using the network analysis method such as centrality indexes (degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality) to identify changes in the structure and properties of the networks between 2018 and 2021. In this study, We analyzes the changes in the container port networks of Busan, Gwangyang, Incheon, Ulsan, and Pyeongtaek-Dangjin, the five largest ports in Korea. As a result, in case of the Busan port, Singapore port plays an important role, while Busan port plays key roles in ports of Gwangyang, Incheon, and Ulsan. In case of the Gwangyang port, Port Kelang in Malaysia has become increasingly influential as a result of the Malaysian government's policies to overcome the pandemic. In the Incheon port, Japanese ports are playing intermediary roles between their ports and those in the Incheon port network. In the case of Ulsan port, the influence of Korean ports is high, and in the case of Pyeongtaek-Dangjin port, Southeast Asian ports play a role as intermediaries between ports. By analyzing the changes in Korea's port logistics networks, this study can be used as a reference point when responding to uncertainty situations that cause changes to port logistics, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, in the future.

  • This study explores the use of virtual reality (VR) technology to identify and label key segments of the golf swing. To address the limitations of existing VR devices, we developed a platform to collect kinematic data from various VR devices using the OpenVR SDK (Software Development Kit) and SteamVR, and developed a semi-automated labeling technique to identify and label temporal changes in kinematic behavior through LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory)-based time series data analysis. The experiment consisted of 80 participants, 20 from each of the following age groups: teenage, young-adult, middle-aged, and elderly, collecting data from five swings each to build a total of 400 kinematic datasets. The proposed technique achieved consistently high accuracy (≥0.94) and F1 Score (≥0.95) across all age groups for the seven main phases of the golf swing. This work aims to lay the groundwork for segmenting exercise data and precisely assessing athletic performance on a segment-by-segment basis, thereby providing personalized feedback to individual users during future education and training.

  • Recently, there have been cases reported in the news of individuals experiencing symptoms of food poisoning after consuming raw beef purchased from online platforms, or reviews claiming that cherry tomatoes tasted bitter. This suggests the potential for analyzing food reviews on online platforms to detect food hazards, enabling government agencies, food manufacturers, and distributors to manage consumer food safety risks. This study proposes a classification model that uses sentiment analysis and large language models to analyze food reviews and detect negative ones, multi-labeling key food safety hazards (food poisoning, spoilage, chemical odors, foreign objects). The sentiment analysis model effectively minimized the misclassification of negative reviews with a low False Positive rate using a 'funnel' model. The multi-labeling model for food safety hazards showed high performance with both recall and accuracy over 96% when using GPT-4 Turbo compared to GPT-3.5. Government agencies, food manufacturers, and distributors can use the proposed model to monitor consumer reviews in real-time, detect potential food safety issues early, and manage risks. Such a system can protect corporate brand reputation, enhance consumer protection, and ultimately improve consumer health and safety.

  • Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is emphasized to enhance ecosystem conservation and increase its ecological value. However, effective implementation of PES and policy execution requires insufficient ecosystem monitoring and research. Therefore, this study analyzed the effectiveness of PES implemented in Janghang Wetland to propose habitat management strategies. The study included monitoring migratory birds and analyzing key species' food sources. The dominant avian species observed in Janghang Wetland include Larus crassirostris, Anas platyrhynchos, Anser albifrons with their primary food sources analyzed as Gramineae plants such as Bromus japonicus, Elymus sibiricus, Brassicaceae plants such as Rorippa palustris. Furthermore, this study found that PES facilitates rice seed supply within Janghang Wetland, benefiting birds including Grus vipio, Anser fabalis, A. albifrons. To sustainable manage Janghang Wetland, improving food supply systems and exploring decentralized supply methods for G. vipio and Gooses (Anser fabalis, A. albifrons) are necessary. Additionally, managing boundaries between agricultural and developmental areas to improve ecological connectivity is essential. This study reaffirmed the ecological importance of Janghang Wetland as a crucial habitat for migratory species. The result will be significant as foundational data that can be used for future policy-making and support sustainable conservation efforts.

  • This study aims to explore educational methods to help students and citizens, who are exposed to numerous manufactured risks, better understand the nature of science and technology. It also seeks to develop their ability to identify, analyze, and evaluate the risks associated with science and technology, ultimately enabling them to live safer lives in society. To achieve this, through an extensive literature review, we explored the definition of risk, the necessity of risk education, and the relationship between SSI (Socioscientific Issues) education and risk education. Based on the results, we proposed the SSI-CURE (Socioscientific Issues Centered on the Understanding of Risk and its Evaluation) model, which can systematically educate about risks in the context of SSI. The SSI-CURE model proceeds through the following four steps: 1) Confrontation of SSI, 2) Understanding the Nature of Science and Technology with SSI, 3) Risk Assessment in SSI, and 4) Enactment of Countermeasures for SSI. These steps represent the key elements for education on risks in the context of SSI: Conceptual understanding of risks (risk knowledge), competencies necessary for discussing or addressing risk situations (risk competency), scientific content knowledge needed to understand risks (knowledge in science), and knowledge required to understand the causes of risks and their impacts (knowledge about science). We expect that the SSI-CURE model can be used not only as a guide for instruction but also as a representative framework for developing programs to educate about risks in the SSI context.

  • This study, conducted in Geolpo-dong and Gamjeong-dong near Gimpo-Hangang New Town, examines an area adjacent to the Han River estuary, a major wintering ground for migratory birds. Over 59 surveys from October 2015 to March 2022 in four representative rice fields (sites A-D) recorded 44,942 individuals from 32 genera and 72 species. Site D, a large area near the Han River, exhibited high species diversity. Despite lower diversity in areas under development (sites A, B, C), ongoing species influx and utilization persist. The study focuses on Anser fabalis, a species predominantly utilizing rice fields, and identified their distribution characteristics. The analysis revealed 162 instances of population influx, with over a 30-fold increase observed across 39 surveys conducted over a 30-month period (October to March, '15~'22). The area, a key wintering site for migratory birds of Janghang Wetland, about 5 km from feeding sites, is heavily utilized by migratory geese, indicating the region's high value considering migration distance and anticipated continuous bird influx despite urban expansion. Therefore, future developments should preserve ecological corridors and connected stepping stone habitats to not only preserve existing habitats but to secure alternative feeding sites, ensuring smooth movements and mitigating habitat loss.

  • The algal blooms in rivers can negatively affect water source management and water treatment processes, necessitating continuous management. In this study, a multi-classification model was developed to predict the concentration of chlorophyll-a (chl-a), one of the key indicators of algal blooms, using Tabular Prior Fitted Networks (TabPFN), a novel deep learning algorithm known for its relatively superior performance on small tabular datasets. The model was developed using daily observation data collected at Buyeo water quality monitoring station from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2022. The collected data were averaged to construct input data sets with measurement frequencies of 1 day, 3 days, 6 days, 12 days. The performance comparison of the four models, constructed with input data on observation frequencies of 1 day, 3 days, 6 days, and 12 days, showed that the model exhibits stable performance even when the measurement frequency is longer and the number of observations is smaller. The macro average for each model were analyzed as follows: Precision was 0.77, 0.76, 0.83, 0.84; Recall was 0.63, 0.65, 0.66, 0.74; F1-score was 0.67, 0.69, 0.71, 0.78. For the weighted average, Precision was 0.76, 0.77, 0.81, 0.84; Recall was 0.76, 0.78, 0.81, 0.85; F1-score was 0.74, 0.77, 0.80, 0.84. This study demonstrates that the chl-a prediction model constructed using TabPFN exhibits stable performance even with small-scale input data, verifying the feasibility of its application in fields where the input data required for model construction is limited.
