  • In this study, the failure modes and energy absorption characteristics of four different kinds of circular tubes made of carbon, glass, Kevlar and carbon-Kevlar hybrid fibres composites with epoxy resin have been evaluated. To achieve these goals, compressive tests were conducted for the tubes under 10mm/min loading speed. Based on the test results, the carbon/epoxy tube showed the best energy absorption capability, while carbon-Kevlar/epoxy tubes were worst. In the failure mode during crushing, both of the carbon/epoxy tubes and the glass/epoxy tubes were crushed by brittle fracturing mode. The Kevlar/epoxy tubes were collapsed by local buckling mode like steel, while the carbon-Kevlar hybrid tubes were collapsed by mixed mode of local buckling and lamina bending.

  • Polyurethane foam has excellent mechanical strength and insulation performance, and has been adopted as an insulation material for $-163^{\circ}C$ liquefied natural gas carrier. In this study, Kevlar Polyurethane Foams(K-PUF) were synthesized by adding Kevlar pulp with excellent mechanical strength for the purpose of improving the performance of existing polyurethane foam. Since polyurethane foam has mechanical performance depending on the proportions of Kevlar pulp added, the mechanical strength of the K-PUF with ratios of fiber0.2wt.%, 0.4wt.%, 0.6wt.%, 0.8wt.% and 1.0wt.%) was evaluated. The compression tests were performed on the 4 different temperatures($20^{\circ}C$, $-50^{\circ}C$, $-110^{\circ}C$ and $-163^{\circ}C$) in consideration of the environmental characteristics as a cryogenic insulation used in LNG carrier. Besides, the effects of the fiber addition on polyurethane foam with closed cell structure were evaluated in a phenomenological approach through SEM analysis. All the results were compared to Neat-polyurethane foam. As a results, 0.8wt.% K-PUF showed the improved mechanical strength, and the addition of Kevlar pulp in a certain ratio improves the mechanical performance by enhancing the compression resistance.

  • Ballistic impact analyses have been performed with the Kevlar fabric impregnated with STF(shear thickening fluid). Multi-layer laminates modeled with 3D isoparametric shell elements were used for the performance analysis and their results are compared with experimental results. Both experiments and numerical analyses have been done to verify the usefulness of STF to enhance the impact resistance performance. The results showed that STF increases friction within a bundle of fiber, and this phenomena is more apparent in the velocity range of under near 450 m/s. In this research, it is emphasized that FEA analyses of STF impregnated Kevlar fabric laminate were successfully conducted using shell elements. Moreover, the effectiveness of the technique and accuracy were verified through the comparison with reliable experimental data.

  • In this study, we focused on development of the adhesive insulator using the case for solid rocket motors. Material of insulator used unvulcanized rubber based on EPDM/kevlar. In case of front insulator, preforms was made by using hot press molding, and then modified nylon film was inserted between two preforms for boots manufacturing. Rear insulator included cylinder part was embodied by only one mold with special designed and manufactured shape in the process. Boots part of rear insulator was obtained by cutting machine with hard-metal cemented carbide.

  • During the land operations, the enemy's gunnery is the primary threat. For the military vehicle, the bulletproof effect is the one of the important issues regarding the safety of soldiers on duty. Recently, the advanced military vehicles have planned to install armor plates. However, due to the budget problem, it is difficult to equip the protection systems. Hence, the optimum approach to increase bulletproof capability is essential. In this paper, the optimum thickness and component of the armor of military vehicles were evaluated by using finite element analysis for bullet impact effects. To achieve this aim, 7.62mm NATO bullet, 1.6mm steel and Kevlar-29 composite have been modeled and the simulations were conducted with various thickness cases by using MSC Nastran sol 700. Consequently, it was revealed that Kevlar-29 45 Layer is appropriate thickness for 7.62 bulletproof. Furthermore, Kevlar-29 in front of steel was effective by comparison with the back of steel for bulletproof.

  • Failure of Kevlar29/Phenolic composite plate under high velocity impact of FSP(Fragment Simulation Projectile) is investigated using a non-linear explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA. Composite laminate and impactor are idealized by solid element and interface between laminas are modeled by tied-break element in LS-DYNA. Interaction between impactor and laminate is simulated face-to-face eroding contact algorithm. When the stress level meets a failure criteria, the layer in the element is eroded. Numerical results are verified by existing test results.

  • An optimal brake pad must have stable friction, low wear and least amount of squeal. In this study, the friction, wear and squeal behavior of some non-asbestos Kevlar materials have been evaluated experimentally. Four specimens with different formulations and a pin-on-disk machine were used for this study. To determine the role of each component in friction and squeal of a brake pad, statistical correlations have been obtained and discussed. The components tested were : Kevlar, Steel Powder, Barium Sulfate and fillers combined by Resin.

  • The composite materials are widely used in the many applications of industry as well as aerospace field because of their high specific stiffness and strength which benefits the material and provides potential energy savings. However, composite materials also have a low property about external applied impact. In this paper, impact tests were conducted on different sample types(glass, carbon and kevlar composite) to obtain information such as absorbed energy and composite deformation using an instrumented impact test machine (DYNATUP 8250). 3 type samples were compared to experimental results. The data from impact test provided valuable information between the different type samples by wet lay up. This paper shows results of that kevlar composite has larger absorption energy and deformation than others.

  • Impact properties of glass/Kevlar hybrid composites which have 3-D braided structures were studied. Results were compared to those of composites made of only glass fibers where the same epoxy resin were used as matrix. Absorbed impact energies evaluated through the combination of the data from the impact tester and high speed camera were compared to each other. In order to see the difference between the damaged area distribution CCD camera captures were performed.
