  • The purpose of this study was to compared the early growth pattern, stem, leaf and root weight, DM yield, flowering characteristics and preference for selection of turf type grasses and wild flower species in mixtures combination for wildflower pasture. The experimental design included five species of turf grasses and 11 species of wildflower : turf type grass species{Kentucky bluegrass(Midnight), tall fescue(Millennium), perennial ryegrass(Palmer III), redtop(Barricuda) and creeping bentgrass(Crenshaw)}, wildflower species {Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L. Coreopsis lanceolata L., Rudbeckia bicolor Nutt.., Dianthus chinensis L., Chrysanthemum lindicum L., Lotus corniculatus var. Japonicus Regel, Veronica linariaefolia Pallas, Aster koraiensis Nakai., Chrysanthemum zanadskii var. latilobum (Maxim.) Kitamura, Lythrum anceps Makino and Iris pallassi var. chinensis Lodd}. The field trials were carried out on the experimental pasture plots of Chungnam National University from January 2005 to December 2006. The appropriate species of turf grass which have a mixture possibility with wildflower are thought to be Kentucky bluegrass. Compared with Kentucky bluegrass, on the other hand, species such as Chrysanthemum leucanthemum L., Lotus corniculatus var. Japonicus Regel, Chrysanthemum zanadskii var. latilobum Maxim.) Kitamura and Lythrum anceps Makino have shown advantageous aspects of fast early growth pattern and highly weights of stem, leaf and root. Futhermore, these wild flowers were in harmony and no overlap on flower color, flowering periods and flowering longevity, and highly preference by Korean native goats. For the establishment of wildflower pasture in Korea, therefore, it is important to select the appropriate species of turf glasses, which have a weak competition against wild flowers, and then to make mixture combination of those turf glasses with the various wild flowers which have a strong competition against turf glasses but have a different anthesis characteristics among themselves.

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the seasonal turf performance in a tree shade and to suggest shade-tolerant turfgrasses suitable for domestic climate conditions. Atotal of 21 trufgrasses were tested, comprising of Korean lawngrass, shade-tolerant fine fescues, and newly-developed, shade-tolerant varieties of cool-season grasses. Dirrerences in shade tolerance were observed among varieties, species, and genera. Overall turf performance of C3 turfgrasses was better than that of C4 Korean lawngrass under a tree shade. Coarse-type fescues were excellent in shade tolerance, bluegrasses good, ryegrasses medium, fine-type fescues fair, and zoysiagrasses poor, respectively. Inter-species comparison in relative index of shade tolerance(IRST) demonstrated that tall fescue and fough bluegrass were greatest of 7.3, Poa supina 6.4, perennial ryegrass 5.0, Kentucky bluegrass 4.8, and fine fescues least, respectively. A great variation in RIST was observed with fine fescues; creeping red fescue was 3.6, chewings fescue 2.5, hard fescue 2.1, and sheep fescue 1.4, respectively. Among 21 turfgrasses evaluated, tall fescue 'Rebel Jr.', 'Era', and 'Oixie' and rough bluegrass 'Sabre' were the shade-tolerant varieties under a tree shade in Korea. Tall fescue, 'Rebel Jr.' was considered as the most shade-tolerant variety in the experiment. Fine fescues as creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, hare fescue, and sheep fescue, used as the shade-tolerant species in a cool climate of Europe and North America, were not suitable under domestic climate conditions.

  • In order to optimize tissue culture conditions of Kentucky bluegrass(Poa pratensis L.), effects of culture medium supplements, media and cultivars on embryogenic callus induction and regeneration of plants were investigated. MS medium containing 3mg/L 2,4-D and 0.1mg/L BA was optimal for embryogenic callus induction from mature seeds. The highest plant regeneration frequency(57.7%) was observed when the embryogenic calli were cultured on N6 medium supplemented with 1mg/L 2,4-D and 3mg/L BA. Among several basic media, MS and N6 medium were optimal for callus induction and plant regeneration, respectively. Genotype was an important factor in plant regenerability. ‘Newport’ showed to have higher regeneration frequency of 53.4%. Regenerated plants were grown normally when shoots transplanted to the soil. A short tissue culture period and high-frequency regeneration system would be beneficial for molecular breeding of Kentucky bluegrass through genetic transformation.

  • Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important nutrients among 17 essential nutrients for maintaining turfgrass color and quality. The slow release fertilizers were initially developed to provide a more consistent release of nitrogen over a longer period and are often used to decrease leaching potential from sandy soils. The goal of this study is to determine if various slow release N sources affect the rate at which turfgrass establishes. Six nitrogen sources were evaluated; Nitroform (38-0-0), Nutralene (40-0-0), Organiform (30-0-0), Sulfur coated urea (SCU, 37-0-0), urea (46-0- 0), and Milorganite (6-0-0). The root zone media was seeded and sodded with 'Limousine' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Sodded pots produced 182 to 518 g more clipping dry weight than seeded pots. Among seeded pots, Milorganite produced greater amount of root dry weight than any other N sources. Because the period of turfgrass growth is different between sodded and seeded plots, there were differences on clipping yield and root growth. Overall, high N rate had turf color greater than acceptable color of 6 among seeded pots throughout the study. However, low N rate didn't produce acceptable turf color throughout the study. Based on the result of this tudy, ilorganite would be ecommended for new establishment of Kentucky bluegrass an urea with less clipping yield which can lead to reduce abor.

  • This study was carried out to examine the growth performance of 4 species of cool-season grasses and 4 species of zoysiagrasses under salt injury in Seo-san reclaimed area. Grasses were grown on the plots with capillary water interruption layer (WCWIL) and without capillary water interruption layer (WOCWIL) soil systems. Cool-season grass and seeding-type zoysiagrass plots were seeded on 6 Jun, 2006. Vegetative zoysiagrass 'Junggi' was established by sprigging and 'Senock' and 'Millock' were plugged. Electric conductivities of irrigation water (ECw) ranged from 0.28 to $3.3\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Electric conductivities (ECe) of the soil with capillary water interruption layer and without capillary water interruption layer ranged from 0.55 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and from 1.84 to $9.4\;dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ respectively. Leaf color, turf quality, coverage rates, and growth rates were rated visually for 2 years. Zoysiagrass 'Junggi', creeping bentgrass, zoysiagrass 'Senock' and 'Millock' showed acceptable growth at salty fairway condition, while Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass mixed with perennial ryegrass, and seeded zoysiagrass 'Zenith' showed establishment rates below 70%. These results will be useful when choosing turf grass species and cultivars for the golf courses in reclaimed land area.

  • Four preparations of liquid turfgrass fertilizers were tested cool season turfgrasses during fall season. The preparations of PS-A, PS-B, PH-C and PH-D for commercial products were contained with essential nutrient elements, seaweed extract, amino acids, and humus substance. Growth and quality of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds cv. Penn-A1) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) mixture (Midnight 33%, Moonlight 33%, Prosperity 33%) were evaluated by normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), root length and fresh weight, shoot density, turf color, and chlorophyll content. Three foliar sprays of 4 preparations with an interval of 7 days were made in the fall of 2013 in the sod production field at Hapchun, Korea. No significant difference among 3 preparations was found in NDVI of creeping bentgrass. However, PS-A was significantly increased NDVI of Kentucky bluegrass. Two to three applications of PS-A significantly increased chlorophyll content and turf color. Three foliar sprays of PS-A and PS-B were significantly increased the shoot density of Kentucky bluegrass on 20 days after final application. These results may indicate that the use of some preparation is beneficial in producing higher quality turfgrass sod with better color and chlorophyll content during fall season.

  • The purpose of seed certification is to preserve the genetic purity and identity of seed varieties. This study is to provide information concerning seed certification procedures and certification standards of Kentucky bluegrass especially used in golf courses. We analyzed data from the seed certification standards of three states (Washington, Idaho and Oregon) in U.S.A. The certification processes both field inspection and laboratory requirement satisfying the minimum seed quality standards. The seed harvesting field must be propagated with the specified class of seeds and requires an adequate isolated distance from other crops. Moreover, the field should be clean and free from the objectionable weeds. The seed analysis tests include a germination rate, a percentage of pure seed, contents of other crop seed, weed seed, and inert matter. The certification standards of the certified seed and the sod quality seed showed general similarity in all three states. The certification standards of the sod quality seed should have less than 0.02% of maximum weed seed. The certified seed should have less than 0.3% of maximum weed seeds. Those certification standards of seed quality should guaranty the quality of turfgrass establishment of golf course.

  • Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements of the phospholipids that are involved in the formation of plant cell membranes. Phosphorus is highly immobile in soils and is often a limiting nutrient for plant growth. Phosphorus mobility and availability varies with several factors such as application frequency, placement in the soil, and the amount of irrigation or precipitation. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of P applications at level of 0, 146, and 293 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at four mixing depths (0, 7.6, 15.2, and 22.9 cm )on the growth and establishment of Kentucky bluegrass (Poapratensis L.) in a sand-based system.Grass clipping samples were collectedevery two weeks, dried, and weighed. Total root dry weight, root organic matter, and tissue content of P were measured at the end of the study. Leachate was collected weekly and analyzed for total P concentration. No difference was found between application of P to the surface and to the 7.6 cm mixing depth. However, surface application with 146 and 293 kg $P{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ produced 8-10% and 16-20% more P in tissue than subsurface applications, respectively.

  • The short green period of zoysiagrass has been a problem in using for turf. This study was performed to check growth response of several wintergrasses under sunny and shady area in Korea. Wintergrasses of 5 species, 27 cultivars introduced from U.S.D.A., were used in this study. After establishment, two fluctuations of top growth were observed which varied according to the species; first, due to drought in May, second, due to high temperature and humidity from July to August. Red fescues and perennial ryegrasses showed severe growth retardation in sunny area during summer period. Kentucky bluegrasses and tall fescues maintained good Qualities nearly all the year round arid showed slight disease infections. Kentucky bluegrass 'Kenblue' and red fescue 'Agram' grown under shady area showed higher photosynthetic ability than under sunny area, except the temperature range from 30˚C to 40 ˚C under 40,000 lux light in red fescue 'Agram'. And the phorosynthesis was decreased at the temperature range from 35 ˚C to 40 ˚C. Key words: Wintergrass, Top growth, Visual rating, Photosynthesis, Poa pratensis. Festuca arundinacea, Pestuca rubra. Lolium perenne, Agrostis stolonifera.
