  • We presented a mapping the work function of the vanadium pentoxide ($V_2O_5$) nanonet structures by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM). In this measurement, the $V_2O_5$ nanonet was self-assembled via dropping the solution of $V_2O_5$ nanowires (NWs) onto the $SiO_2$ substrate and drying the solvent, resulting in the networks of $V_2O_5$ NWs. We found that the SKPM signal as a surface potential of $V_2O_5$ nanonet is attributed to the contact potential difference (CPD) between the work functions of the metal tip and the $V_2O_5$ nanonet. We generated the histograms of the CPD signals obtained from the SKPM mapping of the $V_2O_5$ nanonet as well as the highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) which is used as a reference for the calibration of the SKPM tip. By using the histogram peaks of the CPD signals, we successfully estimated the work function of ~5.1 eV for the $V_2O_5$ nanonet structures. This work provides a possibility of a nanometer-scale imaging of the work function of the various nanostructures and helps to understand the electrical characteristics of the future electronic devices.

  • Surface potential and growth processes of hexadecanethiol (HDT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) surfaces were examined by Kelvin probe method and scanning tunneling microscopy. It was found that surface potential strongly depends on surface structure of HDT SAMs. The surface potential shift for the striped phase of HDT SAMs chemisorbed on Au(111) surface was +0.45 eV, which was nearly the same as that of the flat-lying hexadecane layer physisorbed on Au(111) surface. This result indicates that the interfacial dipole layer induced by adsorption of alkyl chains is a main contributor to the surface potential change. In the densely-packed HDT monolayer, further change of the surface potential was observed, suggesting that the dipole moment of the alkanethiol molecules is an origin of the surface potential change. These results indicate that the work function of a metal electrode can be modified by controlling the molecular orientation of an adsorbed molecule.

  • The general solution of the anti-plane shear problem for the curved interfacial crack between viscoelastic foam and composites was investigated with the complex variable displacement function. Kelvin-Maxwell three parameter model is used to present viscoelasticity and the Laplace transform was applied to treat the viscoelastic characteristics of foam in the analysis. The stress intensity factor near the interfacial crack tip was predicted by considering both anisotropic and viscoelastic properties of two different materials. The results showed that the stress intensity factor increased with increasing the curvature of the curved interfacial crack and it also increased and eventually converged to a specific value with increasing time. The stress intensity factor increased with increasing the ratio of stiffness coefficients between foam and composites and the effect of fiber orientation on the stress intensity factor decreased with increasing the ratio of stiffness coefficients between foam and composites.

  • In this paper, wave resistance for a submerged body is calculated by a higher order panel method. The Neumann-Kelvin problem is solved by the source or normal dipole distribution method. The body surface is represented by a bicubic B-spline and the singularity strengths are approximated by a bilinear form. The results calculated by the higher order panel method are compared with those by the lowest order panel method developed by Hess & Smith. The convergence rate of the higher order panel method is much better than the lowest order panel method. But the wave resistance calculated by the higher order panel method still shows discrepancy with an analytic solution at low Froude number like that by the lowest order panel method.

  • Epitaxial rutile-TiO$_2$ and anatase-TiO$_2$ films were grown at 80$0^{\circ}C$ on $Al_2$O$_3$ (1102) and LaAlO$_3$ (001), respectively, using pulsed laser deposition. The formation of different phases on different substrates could be qualitatively explained by the atomic arrangements at the interfaces. We also successfully deposited epitaxial rutile-TiO$_2$ and anatase-TiO$_2$ films on conductive RuO$_2$ and La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ electrodes, respectively Using a Kelvin probe, we measured the photovoltaic properties of these multilayer structures. A rutile-TiO$_2$ film grown on RuO$_2$ showed a very broad peak in the visible light region. An epitaxial anatase-TiO$_2$ film grown on La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ showed a strong peak with a threshold energy of 3.05 eV 3.05 eV

  • A panel method based on the raised panel approach is developed for the nonlinear ship wave problem of practical hull forms. For the validation of the present numerical scheme. the developed method is first applied to Series 60 hull for which the extensive experimental data are available. As practical applications. the developed method is applied to KRISO 3600 TEU container ship and KRISO 300K VLCC. With the primary emphasis on the nonlinear effects of the global wave pattern generated by the two commercial ships. the calculated wave patterns are compared and verified with the experiments of KRISO. It is found that the calculated results of the present method are quite satisfactory compared with the linear methods like Dawson's approach and Neumann-Kelvin solution.

  • In cells, the microtubules are surrounded by viscoelastic medium. Microtubules, though very small in size, perform a vital role in transportation of protein and in maintaining the cell shape. During performing these functions waves propagate and this propagation of waves has been investigated using nonlocal elastic theory. But the effect of surrounding medium was not taken into account. To fill this gap, this study considers the viscoelastic medium along with nonlocal elastic theory. The analytical formulas of the velocity of waves, and the results reveal that the presence of medium reduces the velocity. The axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric waves are separately discussed. Furthermore, the results are compared with the results gained from the studies of free microtubules. The presence of medium around microtubules results in the increase of the flexural rigidity causing a significant decrease in radial wave velocity as compared to axial and circumferential wave velocities. The effect of viscoelastic medium is more obvious on radial wave velocity, to a lesser extent on torsional wave velocity and least on longitudinal wave velocity.

  • In this study, a steady and unsteady aerodynamic analysis program using a 3-dimensional subsonic unstructured panel method is developed and verified. Surfaces of bodies are modeled with the source and doublet distributions on triangular or quadrilateral panels. Geometry modeling of complex geometries and multi-body, therefore, can be easily accomplished. The Kelvin theory and the unsteady Kutta condition allow the doublet strength of the wake panels determined for unsteady flows. Various steady and unsteady flows in two and three dimensions are computed and compared with the analytical and the published computational results.

  • Despite the increasing importance of manufacturing and application R&D for ultrapure deionized water and electrolyzed ion water, various and systematic studies have not been conducted until now. In this study, the electrostatic discharge (ESD) behavior of electrolyzed ion water using a proton exchange membrane(PEM) was evaluated according to the type, flow rate, and bubble of electrolyzed ion water. In addition, by observing that Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) value returns to the unique value of electrolyzed ion water after electrostatic discharge, the possibility of two types of ions participating in electrostatic discharge ((H2O)n+ (assumed)) and ions for maintaining the characteristics of electrolyzed water could be inferred. In order to confirm the chemical structure and characteristics of the cations, in-depth research related to water molecular orbital energy or band gap should be followed.
