  • Recently, ultra-lightweight materials with open, periodic cell structures take much attention owing to its potential for multi-functionality such as load bearing, thermal dissipation, and actuation. This paper presents experimental results on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics for the Wire-woven Bulk Kagome (WBK) composed of aluminum 1100 wires. The overall pressure drop and heat transfer of the WBK specimen was experimentally investigated under forced air convection condition. The pressure loss and heat transfer performance of the aluminum WBK were compared with other heat dissipation media. It was shown that heat transfer characteristics depended on relative density and surface area density. Comparison with metal foams and other heat dissipation media such as packed beds, lattice frame materials, louvered fins, and others suggests that the aluminum WBK competes favorably with the best available heat dissipation media in heat transfer performance.

  • A Wire-woven Bulk Kagome (WBK) is the new truss type cellular metal fabricated by assembling the helical wires in six directions. The WBK seems to be promising with respect to morphology, fabrication cost, and raw materials. In this paper, first, the geometric and material properties are defined as the main design parameters of the WBK considering the fact that the failure of WBK is caused by buckling of truss elements. Taguchi approach was used as statistical design of experiment(DOE) technique for optimizing the design parameters in terms of maximizing the compressive strength. Normalized specific strength is constant regardless of slenderness ratio even if material properties changed, while it increases gradually as the strainhardening coefficient decreases. Compressive strength of WBK dominantly depends on the slenderness ratio rather than one of the wire diameter, the strut length. Specifically the failure of WBK under compression by elastic buckling of struts mainly depended on the slenderness ratio and elastic modulus. However the failure of WBK by plastic failed marginally depended on the slenderness ratio, yield stress, hardening and filler metal area.

  • Recently, the ultra light metal structure with periodic and three dimensional truss elements takes attention because of its multi-functionality and substantial heat resistance. However, the complicated fabrication process leading to high cost has been a major obstacle to wide applications. In this paper, a new idea to construct an ultra light structure with periodic, three dimensional truss using metal wires is presented. To prove the practical validity, a Kagome-like structure was fabricated from stamped wires and punched face sheets. It was assembled by soldering. Through three-point bending and compression tests, the strength was evaluated and compared with the theory.

  • Recently a new damper system with Kogome truss structure was developed and its mechanical properties were verified based on the laboratory test. This paper presents a Kagome truss damper external connection method for seismic strengthening of RC frame structural system. The Kagome external connection method, proposed in this study, consisted of building structure, Kagome damper and support system. The method is capable of reducing earthquake energy on the basis of the dynamic interaction between external support and building structures using Kagome damper. The pseudo-dynamic test, designed using a existing RC frame apartment for pilot application of LH corporation, was carried out in order to verify the seismic strengthening effects of the proposed method in terms of the maximum load carrying capacity and response ductility. Test results revealed that the proposed Kagome damper method installed in RC frame enhanced conspicuously the strength and displacement capacities, and the method can resist markedly under the large scaled earthquake intensity level.

  • Ultra light metal structures have been studied for several years because of their superior specific stiffness, strength and potential of multi functions. Many studies have been focused on how to manufacture ultra light metal structures and optimize them. In this study, we introduced a new idea to make sandwich panels having octet truss cores. Wires bent in a shape of triangular wave were assembled to construct an Octet truss core and it was bonded with two face sheets to be a sandwich panel. The bending & compressive strength and stiffness were estimated through elementary mechanics for the sandwich specimens with two kinds of face sheets and the results were compared with the ones measured by experiments. Some aspects of assembling and mechanical behavior were discussed compared with Kagome core fabricated from wire, which had been introduced in the authors' previous work.

  • A sandwich panel which is comprised of truss cores faced with solid face sheets is lightweight and multi-functional. So it is widely used to not only structural material but also heat transfer media in transportation field such as airplane, train and vessel. There are various core topologies such as pyramidal and tetrahedral truss, square honeycombs and kagome truss. The study focused on analytical approach to optimize compression and shear quality of the unit cell of PCM with pyramidal configuration. With various unit cell models which have the same core weight per unit area but different truss member angle, analytical solution for effective stress ($\bar{\sigma},\bar{\tau}$), peak stress ($\bar{\sigma}_{peak},\bar{\tau}_{peak}$) by yielding and buckling, relative density ($\bar{\rho}_c$) and effective stiffness ($\bar{E},\bar{G}$) have been computed and compared each other. With this approach, the most optimal core configuration was predicted. The result has become the efficient guidelines for the design of PCM core structure.

  • This paper investigated the strength and stiffness of composite truss unit structures. The model used is a core-filled model combining the Kagome model and the cube truss model. The material properties used for the analysis are 304 stainless steel with elastic modulus of 193 GPa and yield stress of 215 MPa. The theoretical equation is derived from the relative elasticity relation of Gibson - Ashby ratio, the analysis was performed using Deform 3D, a commercial tool. In conclusion, the relative elasticity for this unit model correlates with 1.25 times the relative density and constant coefficient, elasticity is inversely proportional to pore size. The relative compressive strength has a correlation with relative density of 1.25 times. Proof of this is a real experiment, the derived theoretical relationship should further consider mechanical behavior such as bending and buckling. In the future, it is hoped that the research on the elasticity and the stress according to the structure of the three-dimensional space will be continued.

  • In this study, a new type of wire-woven cellular metal named WBD(wire-woven bulk diamond) was developed. Like WBK(wire-woven bulk Kagome), WBD is composed of helically formed wires; WBK was introduced a few years ago, and its mechanical, thermal properties, and engineering applications have been extensively investigated. The number of wires that pass by one another at each cross point in WBD is four, whereas that in WBK is three. The mechanical behavior of WBD subjected to compression was investigated and the results were compared to those for WBK. For a given slenderness ratio the density and yield strength of WBD were about twice as high as those for WBK, but elastic stiffness of WBD was not that higher than that for WBK.
