An Overview of Flight Test Planning and Test Results for the Development of Korean Utility Helicopter (한국형 기동헬기 개발을 위한 비행시험 계획 및 시험결과 개요)

  • The objective of this paper is to give a general understanding for the development flight test of Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH). This paper contains the contents of detailed flight test plan, the type of flight test, an introduction to main flight test area, and the overview of flight test results. At the beginning, more than 8,500 test points were identified for airworthiness certification to show the compliance for the KUH development requirements. However, the number of flight test points were optimized to 7,800 at the end. To accomplish the test objectives, about 860 flight test sorties had been performed, and more than 1,000 test sorties were consumed for trouble shooting. This paper also describes some major issues faced during development flight test phase.

  • Flapper Valve of Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH-1) is an essential equipment in Environmental Control System(ECS) for pilot to perform flight mission. It provides pilots and crews with heating, ventilating and air conditioning. It has function of maintaining room temperature to sustain operational capability for pilot and crew. This paper summarizes pilot comments in flight test which are classified by cause of occurrence and the troubleshooting process about each comment. It also describes design improvements which was derived from troubleshooting and suggests verification results of flight test at low temperature.

  • Military helicopter is exposed to the enemy gun firing due to the low altitude flight of contour flight, hovering & nap of the Earth flight, therefore it has the high possibility to be exploded by the gun firing. Recently the Anti-ballistic requirement is required to get the high level of safety from gun firing in required operational capability. The first military utility helicopter of SURION has the Anti-ballistic requirement and explosion proof. In order to meet the requirement, OBIGGS is adopted for the first time in KUH. It is proven that Anti-Explosion capability is satisfied to requirement for improving vent system which was insufficiently designed in development period and related to Anti-explosion.

  • The electrical power system of Korean Utility Helicopter(KUH) is designed as a dual control system to enhance the system safety of aircraft and each system is installed separately at left and right of the aircraft. The system is composed of 2 AC generators, 1 APU generator, 2 Transformer Rectifier Units(TRU), AC/DC Electrical Master Box(AC/DC EMB). The AC/DC EMB, consists of 2 AC EMB and 2 DC EMB, is essential equipment which supply and distribute electric power to the aviation electronics and electrical equipment of KUH. There were defects caused by internal short circuit in AC EMB during the first production phase of the KUH. This paper describes the analysis of the defects, troubleshooting process, root cause, and the solution by design change.

  • This paper deals with the economic effects for the Surion(KUH-1) research and development program. The economic effects was measured by Inter-industry analysis method for production-inducing effects, value-added inducement effects, and job-creation effects and by estimating actual domestic input cost. In addition, technical riffle effects was analyzed for aerospace industry, defense industry and commercial industry market through similarity and contribution of technology.

  • In this study, scale-down design of full-scale Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) main rotor blade has been investigated. The scaled model system were designed for the measurement of aerodynamic performance, tip vortex and noise source. For the purpose of considering the same aerodynamic loads, the Mach-scale method has been applied. The Mach-scaled model has the same tip Mach number, and it also has the same normalized frequencies. That is, the Mach-scaled model is analogous to full-scale model in the view point of aerodynamics and structural dynamics. Aerodynamic scale-down process could be completed just by adjusting scaling dimensions and increasing rotating speed. In the field of structural dynamics, design process could be finished by confirming the rotating frequencies of the designed blade with the stiffness and inertial properties distributions produced by sectional design. In this study, small-scaled blade sectional design were performed by applying domestic composite prepregs and structural dynamic characteristics of designed model has been investigated.

  • Multi-Function Display (MFD) of Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) displays image information(navigation, flight, topographical and maintenance information) delivered from Mission Computer (MC) during flight operation. The abnormal display of MFD such as flickering phenomenon was identified in the system development. It was solved by improving the shielding performance of the DVI cable and changing the DVI cable installation path at the first mass production. However, it was occurred again when the aircraft was operated for one or two years after delivery. It was also identified in the evaluation process of the derivative helicopters. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the aircraft system level has been performed to solve the problem of MFD malfunction at first and then a design improvement plan was derived by improving the DVI cable. In this paper, the causes of MFD anomalies are analyzed and also the process of design improvement are summarized. The validity of the improvement has been verified through the DVI cable assembly comparison test, SIL/ground/flight test.
