  • This study was carried out to correct shadow area in urban area on KOMPSAT-3 satellite image. For this study, we analyzed characteristics of the shadow area represented by artificial structures in urban area. The proposed shadow correction method divides shadow area into umbra and penumbra areas according to intensity of darkness. The umbra area was detected through the histogram analysis and the statistical method of the NIR image, and then penumbra area and the sunlit area were detected from around the detected umbra area. The correction of the detected umbra and penumbra area were performed by applying the linear correlation correction method. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed shadow correction method was visually performed well. Quantitative analysis was performed through profile analysis. It is proved that proposed method is useful for shadow area correction.

  • In this study, we tried to analyze deforestation due to forest fire by using KOMPSAT satellite imagery. For deforestation analysis, unsupervised change detection algorithm is applied to multitemporal images. Through ITPCA (ITerative Principal Component Analysis) of NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) generated from multitemporal satellite images before and after forest fire, changed areas due to deforestation are extracted. In addition, a post-processing method using SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) data is involved in order to minimize the error of change detection. As a result of the experiment using KOMPSAT-2 and 3 images, it was confirmed that changed areas due to deforestation can be efficiently extracted.

  • KOMPSAT is a three-axis stabilized light weight satellite, and one of the main mission objectives of the KOMPSAT is to conduct scientific and technological analysis in the areas of high resolution imaging and ocean color imaging. This kind of mission requires the satellite to roll up to 45 degrees. Bang-bang control for this rolling maneuver may activate the flexible modes, and therefore cause satellite pointing performance degradation. To deal with this problem, the roll attitude control system, especially for the science mode and maneuver mode of the KOMPSAT, is first verified by numerical simulation. And the open-loop control law for roll maneuver is proposed by use of series expansion and optimization. The proposed control law is applied to KOMPSAT to see its effectiveness.

  • Kompsat-3 is an optical high-resolution earth observation satellite launched in May 2012. In addition to its 0.7m spatial resolution, Kompsat-3 is capable of in-track stereo acquisition enabling quality Digital Elevation Model(DEM) generation. Typical DEM generation procedure requires accurate control points well-distributed over the entire image region. But we often face difficult situations especially when the area of interests is oversea or inaccessible area. One solution to this is to use existing geospatial data even though they only cover a part of the image. This paper aimed to assess accuracy of DEM from Kompsat-3 with different scenarios including no control point, Rational Polynomial Coefficients(RPC) relative adjustment, and RPC adjustment with control points. Experiments were carried out for Kompsat-3 stereo data in USA. We used Digital Orthophoto Quadrangle(DOQ) and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission(SRTM) as control points sources. The generated DEMs are compared to a LiDAR DEM for accuracy assessment. The test results showed that the relative RPC adjustment significantly improved DEM accuracy without any control point. And comparable DEM could be derived from single control point from DOQ and SRTM, showing 7 meters of mean elevation error.

  • There have been many applications to observe Earth using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) since it could acquire Earth observation data without reference to weathers or local times. However researches about digital map generation using SAR have hardly been performed due to complex raw data processing. In this study, we suggested feasibility of producing digital map using SAR stereo images. We collected two sets, which include an ascending and a descending orbit acquisitions respectively, of KOMPSAT-5 stereo dataset. In order to suggest the feasibility of digital map generation from SAR stereo images, we performed 1) rational polynomial coefficient transformation from radar geometry, 2) digital resititution using KOMPSAT-5 stereo images, and 3) validation using digital-map-derived reference points and check points. As the results of two models, root mean squared errors of XY and Z direction were less than 1m for each model. We discussed that KOMPSAT-5 stereo image could generated 1:25,000 digital map which meets a standard of the digital map. The proposed results would contribute to generate and update digital maps for inaccessible areas and wherever weather conditions are unstable such as North Korea or Polar region.

  • In this study, the periodic and simplified update and production way of the ECVAM (Environmental Conservation Value Assessment Map) was presented through the classification of environmental values using KOMPSAT-3A satellite imagery and land cover map. ECVAM is a map that evaluates the environmental value of the country in five stages based on 62 legal evaluation items and 8 environmental and ecological evaluation items, and is provided on two scales: 1:25000 and 1:5000. However, the 1:5000 scale environmental assessment map is being produced and serviced with a slow renewal cycle of one year due to various constraints such as the absence of reference materials and different production years. Therefore, in this study, one of the deep learning techniques, KOMPSAT-3A satellite image, SI (Spectral Indices), and land cover map were used to conduct this study to confirm the possibility of establishing an environmental assessment map. As a result, the accuracy was calculated to be 87.25% and 85.88%, respectively. Through the results of the study, it was possible to confirm the possibility of constructing an environmental assessment map using satellite imagery, optical index, and land cover classification.

  • The main field component of the Earth's magnetic field was modeled from the tri-axial magnetometer onboard KOrean MultiPurpose SATellite-II (KOMPSAT-II) for the purpose of satellite attitude control. The model computed by the KOMPSAT-II magnetometer measurement data is compared with the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) model of a degree of up to 13 in spherical harmonic coefficients. The previous study with KOMPSAT-I (Kim et al. 2004) indicated a good correlation of power spectrum of spherical harmonic coefficients with respect to the degree up to 5. This study, however, showed an agreement of the degree up to 8-9 of the coefficient power spectrum and a discrepancy between degrees 10 and 13. We have concluded that relevant data selection process, removal of the external field from the data in the high latitude region, an accuracy of the magnetometer all play an important role in finding a coherence with the IGRF model. This study will be extended to the secular variation model of geomagnetism if longer-period data become available.

  • The application of simulated KOMPSAT-2 imagery to monitor graveyards is to be developed. Positions calculated from image were compared with those obtained from Geographic Positioning System. With 24 checkpoints, the position of graveyards showed within 5-meter range. Unsupervised classification, supervised classification, and objected-orientation classification algorithms were used to extract the graveyard. Unsupervised classification with masking processes based on National topographic data gives the best result. The graveyards were categorized with four types in field studies while the two types of graveyards were shown in descriptive statistics. Cluster Analysis and discriminant analysis showed the consistency with two types of tombs. It was hard to get a specific spectral signature of graveyards, as they are covered with grasses at different levels and shaded from the surrounding trees. The slopes and aspects of location of graveyards did not make any difference in the spectral signatures. This study gives the basic spectral characteristics for further development of objected-oriented classification algorithms and plausibility of KOMPSAT-2 images for management of mountainous areas in the aspect of position accuracy and classification accuracy.

  • The KOMPSAT-3A is a high-resolution optical satellite launched in 2015 by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). KOMPSAT-3A provides Panchromatic (PAN-0.55 m), Multispectral (MS-2.2 m), and Mid-wavelength infrared (MIROR-5.5 m) image. However, due to security or military problems, MIROR image with 5.5m spatial resolution are provided down sampled at 33 m spatial resolution (MIRrd). In this study, we propose spatial sharpening method to improve the spatial resolution of MIRrd image (33 m) using virtual High Frequency (HF) image and optimal fusion factor. Using MS image and MIRrd image, we generated virtual high resolution (5.5 m) MIRORfus image and then compared them to actual high-resolution MIROR image. The test results show that the proposed method merges the spatial resolution of MS image and the spectral information of MIRrd image efficiently.

  • This paper describes differences of performance when the orbit attitude model is applied to the respective images obtained from two different types of satellite. The one is Spot that rotates its pointing mirror and the other is Kompsat-2 that rotates its whole body when they obtain imagery for target. Our research scope is limited to the orbit-attitude model only as its good performance was proved in prior investigation. Model performances between two images were compared with sensor model accuracy and 3D coordinates calculation. The results show performances of the orbit-attitude model for each image type were different. For Spot imagery, the model required attitude angle to be included as adjustment parameters. For Kompsat-2 imagery, the model required high-order parameter for adjustment. This implies that satellite sensor model may be applied differently in accordance with platform's attitude control scheme and accuracy. Understanding of this information can be a base for improvement and development of model and application for new satellite images.
