KOMPSAT-3/3A (K3/K3A) absolute radiometric calibration study was conducted based on a Field Line of sight Automated Radiance Exposure (FLARE) system. FLARE is a system, which has been developed by Labsphere, Inc. adopted a SPecular Array Radiometric Calibration (SPARC) concept. The FLARE utilizes a specular mirror target resulting in a simplified radiometric calibration method by minimizing other sources of diffusive radiative energies. Several targeted measurements of K3/3A satellites over a FLARE site were acquired during a field campaign period (July 5-15, 2021). Due to bad weather situations, only two observations of K3 were identified as effective samples and they were employed for the study. Absolute radiometric calibration coefficients were computed using combined information from the FLARE and K3 satellite measurements. Comparison between the two FLARE measurements (taken on 7/7 and 7/13) showed very consistent results (less than 1% difference between them except the NIR channel). When additional data sets of K3/K3A taken on Aug 2021 were also analyzed and compared with gain coefficients from the metadata which are used by current K3/K3A, It showed a large discrepancy. It is assumed that more studies are needed to verify usefulness of the FLARE system for the K3/3A absolute radiometric calibration.

The electrical characteristics of solid state devices such as BJT(Bipolar Junction Transistor) and MOSFET, etc, are altered by impinging nuclear radiation and temperature in the space environment. This phenomenon is well known and has been studied extensively since the early 1960's when satellites were first being designed and used in the United States. However, the studies and the developments of radiation hardening technologies for the electronic components at the industrial fields in our country has not been popular so far. The worst case design technology in the electrical circuit is required for the appropriate operation of solid state devices in the space environment. In this paper, the interface circuit used in KOMPSAT(Korea Multipurpose Satellite), which is now being operated since the one was launched in 1999, is optimally designed to accomodate the worst case design and radiation effect.

LEO Satellite performs the operations and missions by FSW(Flight Software) after separation from a launch vehicle. Many of the operations by FSW are automatically conducted by the algorithms of FSW. In the case of the IAC(Initial Activation and Checkout) operations, a mission scheduling, an orbit transition, etc, however, a decision and a control of the satellite operators or manufacturers are required in order to operate the satellite safely. For this, the wireless communication channel between a satellite and a ground station should be prepared to receive telemetries and to transmit tele-commands for controlling FSW properly. Therefore, the verification of the interface between KOMPSAT-3 and a ground station is essential. This verification test is named the satellite end-to-end test. In this paper, we show the design process of the satellite end-to-end test and test results.

In this paper, we introduce a satellite conceptual design software which can be used for outlining a new satellite as well as for educational purpose. This software consists of three commercial tools: MATLAB, STK(Satellite Tool Kit), and Excel. The management of the design software is done by MATLAB which provides basic calculations, GUI(Graphical User Interface), Excel data base management, and STK control. STK, an orbital simulation software developed by AGI, takes a part of obtaining accurate orbital information of a satellite. Excel, a product of Microsoft, is used for the data base of previous satellites and for the saving place of temporary and final results of the software. The conceptual design of a satellite is to roughly estimate power system and mass. In the power system design, the sizes of solar array and battery are determined. Based on the database of existing satellites, we can estimate the subsystems's mass fraction of a target satellite. Design examples for Kompsat 1 and 2 are suggested for verification of the developed software.

Selecting proper location for complex facility with special purpose need comprehensive consideration on the condition and surrounding environment. Especially, in case of living space for human, lighting, ventilation, efficiency in land use, etc. are important elements. Diverse 3D analysis through 3D topography modeling and virtual simulation is necessary for this. Now, it can be processed with relatively inexpensive cost since high resolution satellite image essential in topography modeling is provided with domestic technology through Arirang No. 2 satellite (KOMPSAT2). In this study, several candidate sites is selected for complex planning with special purpose and analysis on proper location was performed using the 3D topography modeling and land information. For this, land analysis, land price calculation, slope analysis and aspect analysis have been carried out. As a result of arranging the evaluation index for each candidate site and attempting the quantitative evaluation, proper location could be selected efficiently and reasonably.

Generally, image fusion is defined as generating re-organized image by merging two or more data using special algorithms. In remote sensing, image fusion technique is called as Pan-sharpening algorithm because it aims to improve the spatial resolution of original multispectral image by using panchromatic image of high-spatial resolution. The pan-sharpened image has been an important task due to various applications such as change detection, digital map creation and urban analysis. However, most approaches have tended to distort the spectral information of the original multispectral data or decrease the spatial quality compared with the panchromatic image. In order to solve these problems, a novel pan-sharpening algorithm is proposed by considering the spectral and spatial characteristics of multispectral image. The algorithm is applied to the KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird satellite image and the results showed that our method can improve the spectral/spatial quality compared with the existing fusion algorithms.
This paper presents an efficient image fusion method to be appropriate for the KOMPSAT-2 and 3 satellites. The proposed method is based on the well-established component substitution (CS) approach. The proposed method is divided into two parts: 1) The first step is to create a intensity image by the weighted-averaging operation of a multi-spectral (MS) image and 2) the second step is to produce an optimal high-frequency image using the statistical properties of the original MS and panchromatic (PAN) images. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in both quantitative and visual analysis. Quantitative assessments are performed by using the relative global dimensional synthesis error (Spatial and Spectral ERGAS), the image quality index (Q4), and the spectral angle mapper index (SAM). The qualitative and quantitative assessment results show that the fusion performance of the proposed method is improved in both the spectral and spatial qualities when it is compared with previous CS-based fusion methods.
This paper includes the test results of KOMPSAT-2 payload downlink system which
were measured for the purpose of performance verification. The antenna beam patterns
which indicates the status of the interface & antenna itself, were measured as well as
the antenna VSWR. The checkout of the transponder & its spectrum was followed and
this made sure that there was no spurious output distinguished. Finally a test for BER
verification was conducted between satellite and receiving system for their compatibility
through the antenna-to-antenna connection using an antenna hat. Verification tests for
an RF system should be performed after relocation, integration and test for
environments in order to make sure that no degradation happens.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korea is developing a CAS 500-1/2 satellite capable of photographing a GSD 0.5 m level image, and is developing a technology to utilize this. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a geospatial feature extraction technique aimed at automation as a technique for utilizing CAS 500-1/2 satellite images. KOMPSAT-3A satellite images that are expected to be most similar to CAS 500-1/2 were used for research and the possibility of automation of geospatial feature extraction was analyzed through relative radiometric normalization. For this purpose, the parameters and thresholds were applied equally to the reference images and relative radiometric normalized images, and the geospatial feature were extracted. The qualitative analysis was conducted on whether the extracted geospatial feature is extracted in a similar form from the reference image and relative radiometric normalized image. It was also intended to analyze the possibility of automation of geospatial feature extraction by quantitative analysis of whether the classification accuracy satisfies the target accuracy of 90% or more set in this study. As a result, it was confirmed that shape of geospatial feature extracted from reference image and relative radiometric normalized image were similar, and the classification accuracy analysis results showed that both satisfies the target accuracy of 90% or more. Therefore, it is believed that automation will be possible when extracting spatial objects through relative radiometric normalization.
