  • This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution of enamel hypomineralization, including molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH), among adolescents and assess their correlation with esthetic satisfaction. A total of 1371 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 16 years in Yangsan city were evaluated for enamel hypomineralization, including MIH, according to the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) criteria. In a parallel survey, esthetic satisfaction about anterior teeth and its correlation with incisor enamel hypomineralization were analyzed. The prevalence of MIH was 13.8% (n = 189), while that of hypomineralization in any permanent tooth was 23.2% (n = 318), which was substantially greater compared to the national prevalence of MIH. Mandibular first molars exhibited the highest prevalence of hypomineralization, followed by maxillary central incisors and mandibular second molars. Among anterior teeth, the most frequently affected site was the incisal edge of maxillary central incisors. A high degree of hypomineralization in anterior teeth was associated with a high demand for esthetic treatment.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of high viscosity bulk-fill resin composites, $Filtek^{TM}$ Bulk Fill Posterior Restorative (FBF) and $Tetric^{(R)}$ N-Ceram Bulk Fill (TBF), with conventional composite ($Filtek^{TM}$ Z-350 XT, Z-350). The Vickers hardness test which indicates the degree of conversion was performed and the dye penetration test was performed to measure the microleakage which indicates polymerization shrinkage amount. To minimize experimental error, the standardized 3D-printed molds and the bovine teeth were used. Obtained data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test with the confidence interval of 95%. In the microhardness test within 1 hour of polymerization, lower surface of FBF and TBF showed significantly lower value than that of Z-350 (p < 0.05). But after 24 hours, the microhardness of FBF had increased and showed no significant difference with Z-350 (p > 0.05). In top and 2 mm depth surface, mean microhardness values were in the following order: Z-350 > FBF > TBF (p < 0.05). The mean microleakage value of TBF was significantly lower than others (p < 0.05). For clinical application of bulk-fill resin composites, caution for applying masticatory forces during 24 hours after polymerization is advised and further studies to decrease microleakage should be conducted.

  • Recently, sedation is routinely used in children who lacked cooperation in pediatric dental clinics. The purpose of this study is to analyze dental treatment cases in department of pediatric dentistry at Dankook University Dental Hospital associating with sedation during 5 years. From January 2011 to December 2015, information about dental treatment cases in department of pediatric dentistry was collected and reviewed. The information gathered included patient gender, age, sedation type, sedative agents, date of operation, and type of procedure. The proportion of treatment cases with conscious sedation for total treatment cases continued to decline until 2014. On the other hand, the incidence of general anesthesia increased gradually. The frequency of midazolam administration and nitrous oxide inhalation sedation increased recently. The use of conscious sedation was significantly decreased when the age of patient was 3 years or older. The frequency of general anesthesia was similar in all age groups. There was a tendency to perform treatment with deeper sedation when the patient was male than female, and when the pulp treatment was performed together with the restorative treatment than not performed. The frequency of re-treatment within 90 days after restoration treatment decreased as the depth of sedation increased.

  • For this research 20 supernumerary teeth impacted in the maxillary anterior have been extracted and pulp cells have been collected from them. From the collected pulp cells, total of 17 (10 males, 7 females) have been selected as subjects. From this research, the run-time of successive culture of the cell from tooth number pulp tissue was $2.91{\pm}0.29$ days. From the gathering of cells from the initial pulp tissue until gaining 80% confluency took $4.53{\pm}0.94$ which was the longest. The following successive cultures took $2.73{\pm}0.32$ days. Average runtime for female was $2.81{\pm}0.27$ days whereas male had average runtime of $2.98{\pm}0.29$ days. Average run-time for inversion was $2.94{\pm}0.30$ days and for normal location, $2.80{\pm}0.20$ days. Average runtime was $2.92{\pm}0.31$ days and other forms took $2.88{\pm}0.22$ days. In the future, follow up research would be needed to evaluate the efficiency of the cells collected from the initial passage and the latter passage as stem-cells and taking into consideration the less than 3 days'time for the subculture, it could be concluded that the research efficiency and fast cultivation would be sufficiently effective.

  • During orthodontic treatment, formation of white spot lesions (WSLs) around brackets has long been recognized as a potential risk. This study performed to investigate effect of preventing enamel demineralization and remineralization by application of fluoride-containing orthodontic primer. Fifty extracted bovine incisors teeth were randomly allocated to 3 groups: (I) Non-preparation specimens, (II) Application of Light Bond$^{TM}$ as fluoride containing orthodontic primer, (III) Application of Transbond$^{TM}$ XT Primer as traditional orthodontic primer without fluoride. Each group is demineralized under artificial carious solution. The demineralization pattern was evaluated using a Q-ray view, Vickers hardness test and polarized light microscope. The remained primer was calculated as 35 - 50%. The highest surface microhardness was shown on Light Bond$^{TM}$ surface. There were statistically significant differences in Vickers microhardness number between adjacent areas of Light Bond$^{TM}$ and non-prepared area. There was almost no demineralization of the enamel surface under the Light Bond$^{TM}$. At the adjacent site of Light Bond$^{TM}$, the shallow caries pattern and remineralization appearance were also observed. These results suggest that the use of fluoride-containing primers may be useful for bracket attachment to reduce enamel demineralization during orthodontic treatment.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare efficiency of broad spectrum LEDs ($VALO^{(R)}$, Ultradent, USA) with conventional LED curing lights ($Elipar^{TM}$ Freelight 2, 3M ESPE, USA) using a microhardness test. The light curing units used were $VALO^{(R)}$ in three different modes and $Elipar^{TM}$ Freelight 2. The exposure time was used according to the manufacturer's instructions. After cured resin specimens were stored in physiological saline at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, microhardness was measured using Vickers microhardness tester. The microhardness of upper and lower sides of the specimens were analyzed separately by the ANOVA method (Analysis of Variance) with a significance level set at 5%. At upper side of resin specimens, an increased microhardness was observed in the broad spectrum LED curing light unit with a high power mode for 4 seconds and plasma emulation mode for 20 seconds (p < 0.05). However, at the lower side of resin specimens, there were no significant differences in microhardness between broad spectrum LED curing light unit and conventional LED curing light unit.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of primary anterior zirconia crown made with Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology by analyzing fracture strength and translucency parameter. Zirconia crown was designed with CAD software, using 3D scanned data of #61 tooth model. Crown fabrication was performed with CAM machine using zirconia block. Zirconia crowns were divided into 3 groups according to thickness(0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm), and fracture strength was compared with 1.0 mm thickness of resin strip crown. The compressive force was applied with universal testing machine at 30° along the incisal edge at increments of 1 mm/min. For translucency evaluation, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 mm thickness of zirconia specimens were fabricated and translucency was measured with spectrophotometer. Among zirconia groups, there was a significant increase in fracture strength as thickness increased (p < 0.05). The fracture strength of zirconia crown was significantly higher than resin strip crown in all groups (p < 0.05). Translucency parameter was highest in 0.3 mm group, and significantly decreased as thickness increased to 0.5 and 0.7 mm (p < 0.05). Thin primary anterior zirconia crown can be designed and fabricated according to individual needs by using CAD/CAM. Restoration with thin crown would reduce the amount of tooth reduction, risk of pulp exposure, and make more esthetic restoration possible.

  • This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation of cheese byproduct on performance, egg quality and fatty acid profile of egg yolk lipids from laying hens. One hundred five 30-wk-old White leghorn laying hens were randomly distributed into five groups of twenty one hens each and maintained in individual laying cages for 4 weeks. The hens were assigned to five treatments that consisted of corn-soybean meal based diets containing 0, 1, 3, 5 or 10% of cheese byproduct. Feed intake and rate of egg production of hens were not significantly different across the treatments during the whole experiment (p>0.05). Similarly, egg yolk cholesterol level, egg weight, Haugh's unit, eggshell thickness, color, and strength were not significantly different across the treatments (p>0.05). The amount of C16:0 in egg yolk was not significantly different across the treatments, but that of C18:0 decreased with increased cheese byproduct (p<0.01). Monounsaturated fatty acid (C16:1 and C18:1) content in egg yolk was similar across the treatments. Total CLA and cis-9, trans-11 CLA content increased linearly with increased cheese byproduct (p<0.001), while trans-10, cis-12 CLA amount was not significantly different across the treatments (p>0.05). Total saturated fatty acid (SFA) in the egg yolk was decreased as the level of cheese byproduct including CLA increased (p<0.01). However, the amount of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) such as monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-6 PUFA, and total PUFAs in the egg yolk were not significantly different across the treatments (p>0.05). Therefore, the present results showed that cheese byproduct beneficially improved the fatty acid composition of concern to human health in the egg yolk without adverse effects on egg quality.

  • We report results of the performance evaluation of a new hardware correlator in Korea, the Daejeon correlator, developed by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). We conduct Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations at 22 GHz with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) in Korea and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) in Japan, and correlated the aquired data with the Daejeon correlator. For evaluating the performance of the new hardware correlator, we compare the correlation outputs from the Daejeon correlator for KVN observations with those from a software correlator, the Distributed FX (DiFX). We investigate the correlated flux densities and brightness distributions of extragalactic compact radio sources. The comparison of the two correlator outputs shows that they are consistent with each other within < 8%, which is comparable with the amplitude calibration uncertainties of KVN observations at 22 GHz. We also find that the 8% difference in flux density is caused mainly by (a) the difference in the way of fringe phase tracking between the DiFX software correlator and the Daejeon hardware correlator, and (b) an unusual pattern (a double-layer pattern) of the amplitude correlation output from the Daejeon correlator. The visibility amplitude loss by the double-layer pattern is as small as 3%. We conclude that the new hardware correlator produces reasonable correlation outputs for continuum observations, which are consistent with the outputs from the DiFX software correlator.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of subculture times in the early, middle, and late passages by measuring the time under subculture until it was judged that the supernumerary tooth-derived pulp stem cells (sDPSCS) were no longer proliferating. Three supernumerary teeth from two healthy six-years old boys were extracted and stem cells were obtained from the pulp tissue. This was called SNT1 (supernumerary tooth 1), SNT2, and the supernumerary tooth from another child was named SNT3. SNT1 and 2 were subcultured at the same time and SNT3 was subcultured a little faster. The mean time of complete subculture was $3.6{\pm}1.1$ days. Total passages were cultured up to $23.3{\pm}0.6$ and took 83 days. These were divided into three groups based on the passage. The increase rate of time taken in subculture between group I and group II was 11.9%, but the rate between group II and group III was 28.6%, which was 2.4 times increased. The time taken between passages during long-term subculture up to 22 passages shows a regressive pattern y = 0.1169x + 2.25 and y = 0.1169x + 2.0. In conclusion, the passage time of SPSCs increased in late passages, and it shows a similar pattern.
