  • Let $\mathbb{Z}^n$ be the Cartesian product of the set of integers $\mathbb{Z}$ and let ($\mathbb{Z}$, T) and ($\mathbb{Z}^n$, $T^n$) be the Khalimsky line topology on $\mathbb{Z}$ and the Khalimsky product topology on $\mathbb{Z}^n$, respectively. Then for a set $X\;{\subset}\;\mathbb{Z}^n$, consider the subspace (X, $T^n_X$) induced from ($\mathbb{Z}^n$, $T^n$). Considering a k-adjacency on (X, $T^n_X$), we call it a (computer topological) space with k-adjacency and use the notation (X, k, $T^n_X$) := $X_{n,k}$. In this paper we introduce the notions of KD-($k_0$, $k_1$)-homotopy equivalence and KD-k-deformation retract and investigate a classification of (computer topological) spaces $X_{n,k}$ in terms of a KD-($k_0$, $k_1$)-homotopy equivalence.

  • Supporting NNS method in KD-Tree algorithm is essential in multidimensional data applications. In this paper, we propose HD-Tree, a high-performance Lock-Free KD-Tree that supports NNS in situations where reads and writes occurs concurrently. HD-Tree reduced the number of synchronization nodes used in NNS and requires less atomic operations during Lock-Free method execution. Comparing with existing algorithms, in a multi-core system with 8 core 16 thread, HD-Tree's performance has improved up to 95% on NNS and 15% on modifying in oversubscription situation.

  • Purpose: The incidence of Kawasaki disease (KD) is rare in young infants (less than 3 months of age), who present with only a few symptoms that fulfill the clinical diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis for KD can therefore be delayed, leading to a high risk of cardiac complications. We examined the clinical characteristics and measured the serum levels of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels of these patients for assessing its value in the early detection of KD. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of young infants diagnosed with KD from 2004 to 2012. The control group included 20 hospitalized febrile patients. Laboratory data, including NT-proBNP were obtained for each patient in both groups. Results: Incomplete KD was observed in 21/24 patients (87.5%). The mean fever duration on admission was $1.36{\pm}1.0$ days in the KD group. Common symptoms included erythema at the site of Bacille Calmette-Guerin inoculation (70.8%), skin rash (50.0%), changes of oropharyngeal mucosa (29.1%), and cervical lymphadenopathy (20.8%). The mean number of major diagnostic criteria fulfilled was $2.8{\pm}1.4$. Five KD patients (20.8%) had only one symptom matching these criteria. The incidence of coronary artery complications was 12.5%. The mean serum NT-proBNP level in the acute phase, in the KD and control groups, were $4,159{\pm}3,714pg/mL$ and $957{\pm}902pg/mL$, respectively, which decreased significantly in the convalescent phase. Conclusion: Incomplete KD was observed in 87.5% patients. Serum NT- proBNP might be a valuable biomarker for the early detection of KD in febrile infants aged <3 months.

  • Purpose: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis and affects many organ systems. It often presents sterile pyuria, microscopic hematuria, and proteinuria due to renal involvement. The aims of this study were to define clinical characteristics of acute KD patients with pyuria and to analyze meaning of pyuria in KD. Methods: The medical records and laboratory findings including serum and urine test of 133 patients with KD admitted to Yeungnam University Hospital from March 2006 to December 2010 were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Forty patients had sterile pyuria and their clinical characteristics including age, gender and body weight were not significantly different with those who did not have pyuria. Fever duration after treatment was significantly longer in KD patients with pyuria. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and serum concentration of alanine aminotransferase were significantly higher in patients with pyuria. Hyponatremia and coronary artery lesion were seen more often in patients with pyuria but there was no significant difference. Also serum blood urea nitrogen was significantly higher in KD patients with pyuria. Urine ${\beta}_2$-microglobulin was elevated in both patients groups and showed no difference between two groups. Conclusion: We found more severe inflammatory reaction in KD patients with pyuria. We also found elevation of some useful parameters like ${\beta}_2$-microglobulin that indicate renal involvement of KD through the urine test. Careful management and follow up will need for KD patients with pyuria and it is necessary in the future to study the specific parameters for renal involvement of KD.

  • Ray-object intersection is an important element in ray tracing that takes up a substantial amount of computing time. In general, such spatial data structure as kd-tree has been frequently used for static scenes to accelerate the intersection computation. Recently, a few variants of kd-tree traversal have been proposed suitable for the GPU that has a relatively restricted computing architecture compared to the CPU. In this article, we propose yet another two implementation techniques that can improve those previous ones. First, we present a cached stack method that is aimed to reduce the costly global memory access time needed when the stack is allocated to global memory. Secondly, we present a rope-with-short-stack method that eases the substantial memory requirement, often necessary for the previous rope method. In order to show the effectiveness of our techniques, we compare their performances with those of the previous GPU traversal methods. The experimental results will provide prospective GPU ray tracer developers with valuable information, helping them choose a proper kd-tree traversal method.

  • Purpose: This single-center study was conducted to assess the changes in epidemiological and clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) over the past 7 years. Methods: This retrospective study included 135 children with KD, admitted to Chungnam National University Hospital, Daejeon, between 2004 and 2005 (group A, n=53) and between 2011 and 2012 (group B, n=82). Medical records were reviewed to obtain information regarding the presenting signs and symptoms, demographic characteristics, and laboratory and echocardiographic findings associated with KD. Results: The hospital admission date after onset was significantly earlier in group B than in group A (P=0.008). The proportion of patients with incomplete KD was 45.3% and 65.9% in group A and B, respectively (P=0.018). The number of pretreatment coronary artery lesions (CALs) were significantly lesser in group B than in group A. (10/53 vs. 5/82, P=0.021). No significant differences was observed in the incidence of CALs at discharge, febrile phase duration, hospital stay duration, incidence of retreatment, and intravenous immunoglobulin dose between 2 groups. The total febrile phase was shorter in patients with incomplete KD than in those with complete KD in both groups. Conclusion: The proportion of incomplete KD has become higher. Furthermore, early admission and management of patients with KD may be related to increased incomplete KD and decreased CALs. Therefore, we believe that a diagnostic strategy for incomplete KD should be established regardless of the presence of coronary lesions.

  • Purpose: Ketogenic diets (KDs) have anti-obesity effects that may be related to glucose control and the gut microbiota. This paper hypothesizes that KD reduces body weight and changes the insulin sensitivity and gut microbiota composition in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. Methods: In this study, C57BL/6 male mice were assigned randomly to 3 groups. The assigned diets were provided to the control and high-fat (HF) diet groups for 14 weeks. The KD group was given a HF diet for 8 weeks to induce obesity, followed by feeding the KD for the next 6 weeks. Results: After the treatment period, the KD group exhibited a 35.82% decrease in body weight gain compared to the HF group. In addition, the KD group demonstrated enhanced glucose control, as shown by the lower levels of serum fasting glucose, serum fasting insulin, and the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, compared to the HF group. An analysis of the gut microbiota using 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing revealed a significant decrease in the proportion of Firmicutes when the KD was administered. In addition, feeding the KD reduced the overall alpha-diversity measures and caused a notable separation of microbial composition compared to the HF diet group. The KD also led to a decrease in the relative abundance of specific species, such as Acetatifactor_muris, Ligilactobacillus_apodemi, and Muribaculum_intestinale, compared with the HF group. These species were positively correlated with the body weight, whereas the abundant species in the KD group (Kineothrix_alysoides and Saccharofermentans_acetigenes) showed a negative correlation with body weight. Conclusion: The current study presents supporting evidence that KD reduced the body weight and altered the insulin sensitivity and gut microbiota composition in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity.
