Step-drawdown test has been generally conducted to evaluate productivity or efficiency of both aquifer and well. In general step-drawdown test, pumping with a low constant discharge rate is conducted in the first stage until the drawdown within the well stabilizes. And then the groundwater is pumped with a higher rate in the next step until the drawdown stabilizes once more. This process is repeated at least three times (steps), with the equal duration. In this paper we tried to review some critical problems related to the step-drawdown test, which were revealed in the process of field practices and analyses. The problems, referred in this paper are mainly associated with the incorrect conceptual approach for analysis and incomplete data collection in the field test.
In recent years, the geotextile tubes filled with dredged material have been used in dike and breakwater construction for a number of projects around the world, and their use in this field is growing very fast. One of the most attractive advantages of geotextile tube technology is can be use the in-situ filling materials by hydraulic pumping, it can be also established lower costs and fast construction than other technology. Geotextiles form one of the two largest groups of geosynthetics and it is commonly made by two major types of polymer material(Polypropylene, Polyester). The objective of this paper is to examine several issues associated with drainage function and feasibility of geotextile tube structure such as filtering efficiency, dewatering efficiency, and filling process with polymer materials. Based on the laboratory filtering test and in-situ tests, polypropylene goetextile is more effective for drainage function of geotextile tube technology.
The dimension of the fishlock at the Youngam Lake is 6.6m wide and 30m long, and it has been used for both fish migration and ship passage. The capacity of attraction freshwater is $0.172\;\textrm{m}^3/s$, and the water depth of the fishlock varies between 1.9m - 5.7m due to the tide. Fishes were sampled weekly by using 3m wide maze net from April to June, 1999, and by using purse seine covering the entire space of fishlock from July to November, 1999. 116,014 samples were comprised of 25 species, and 99.5% of the samples were 10 kinds of diadromous fishes. The order of the diadromous fishes in abundance was Hemirhamphus kurumeus, Hypomesus olidus, Coilia ectens, and Mugil cephalu, where these four species consist 99% of the individuals, and the other six species contribute only a few of individuals. Each species had unique peak migration period. The peak migration of Hypomesus olidus, Mugil cephalus, Coilia ectens, and Hemirhamphus kurumeus happened on July 20, July 15, May 10, and May 1, respectively.tively.
A pilot scale filed model test and 2-D numerical analysis was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of constructing a geogrid-reinforced and pile-supported embankment system over soft ground to reduce differential settlement, and the results are presented hearin. Three-by-three pile groups with varying the space between pile were driven into a layer of soft marine clay and a layer of geogrid was used as reinforcement over each pile group. 2-D numerical analysis has been conducted by using the FLAC-2D(Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) program for same condition of field model test. The settlement, vertical stress, and strain of geogrid due to the construction of embankment were measured at various locations. Based on the field model test and numerical analysis results, pile reinforcement generated the soil arching at the midspan of pile cap and the geogrid reinforcement helps reduce the differential settlement of the soft ground by tensile strength of geogrid. Also for $D/b{\geq}6.0$, the effectiveness of geogrid reinforcement in reducing settlement is negligible.
In cases of the loosely accumulated ground and soft clayey soils, the settlement criterion usually governs in evaluating the stability of structures. The settlement is also a dominant factor to control the design of granular compaction piles mainly applied to the reinforcement of foundation structures in soft ground. In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on the load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the present study, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles is proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. Further, far the verification of a validity of the proposed method, predicted settlements are compared with results from previous studies. In addition, parametric studies are performed together with detailed analyses of relevant design parameters.

To research changes in the fish community of intertidal zones in relation to the construction of the Saemangeum tidal embankment, fishes were collected in the tide pools of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, and of Haechang, Buan-gun in Jeollabuk-do, every month from December 2002 to October 2004. Based on the fishes collected and data from previous studies show that in the tide pools of Haechang, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species is Tridentiger trigonocephalus, as before. However, in the tide pools of Naechodo, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species changed from T. trigonocephalus to Synechogobius hasta. Favonigobius gymnauchen, which inhabits sand-beds, decreased remarkably. Meanwhile, in the intertidal zone of Haechang, young black porgy were caught in large quantities, while in the intertidal zone of Naechodo, young Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Lateolabrax japonicus, which had been caught in a large amounts between 1994 and 2000, were not caught. The results are thought to show that the intertidal zone of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, had more deposits by tide flats than that of Haechang, Buan-gun, which drastically changed the habitat of its fish community.

The field scale experiment was performed to examine the effect of plant coverage on the constructed wetland performance and recommend the optimum development and management of macrophyte communities. Four sets (each set of 0.88 ha) of wetland (0.8 ha) and pond (0.08 ha) systems were used. Water flowing into the Seokmoon estuarine reservoir from the Dangjin stream was pumped into wetland system. Water depth was maintained at 0.3 ${\sim}$ 0.5 m and hydraulic retention time was managed to about 2 ${\sim}$ 5 days; emergent plants were allowed to grow in the wetlands. After three growing seasons of the construction of wetlands, plant coverage was about 90%, even with no plantation, from bare soil surfaces at the initial stage. During the start up period of constructed wetlands, lower water levels should be maintained to avoid flooding newly plants, if wetland plants are to be started from germinating seeds. Effluent T-N concentration in low plant coverage wetland was higher in winter than high plant coverage wetland, whereas no T-P effluent concentration and removal efficiency difference was observed within 15% plant coverage. Dead vegetation affected nitrogen removal during winter because it is a source of organic carbon which is an essential parameter in denitrification. Biomass harvesting is not a realistic management option for most constructed wetland systems because it could only slightly increase the removal rate and provide a minor nitrogen removal pathway due to lack of organic carbon.
Geotextile have been used for the past 30 years for various types of containers, such as small sandbag, 3-D fabric forms and aggregate filled gabion etc. While they are mainly used for flood and water control, they are also used against beach erosion fir shore protection. Especially, large-sized geotextile tube structures are used in various innovative coastal systems involving breakwaters. This paper presents the hydrodynamic behavior of geotextile tubes based on the results of hydraulic model tests. These tube are generally about 1.0 m to 2.0 m in diameter, thou띤 they can be sized for any application. The tubes can be used solely, or stacked to add greater height and usability. Stacked geotextile tubes will be created by adding the height necessary for some breakwaters and embankment, therefore increasing the usability of geotextile tubes. The hydraulic model test was conducted as structural condition and wave conditions. Structural condition is installation direction to the wave (perpendicular and 45$^{circ}$$), and wave condition is varied with the significant wave height ranging from 3.0 m to 6.0 m. Compared with previous test result, the stacked geotextile tube is more stable against wave attack than single tube. Also, the case of none-water depth above crest is more stable than 0.5H of water depth above crest. The incline installed stacked tube is more effective for wave adsorption.
Rocks are dumped to soft marine ground in order to improve trafficability and construction conditions in the tideland reclamation construction sites. Though this rock layer under earth fill has caused in a serious seepage problems after construction, seepage behaviors of this embankment structure is not correctly investigated. Water flow through rock layers is, in general, known as Non-Darcy's flow. However, the embedded rock layer under earth fill is not known whether its flow is governed by Darcy's or Non-Darcy's law. Therefore, a numerical analysis, laboratory model test and filed investigations were performed for analyzing the those seepage characteristics in this research. Results show that there is significance of $95\%$ of confidence between observed heads and seepage rates, and the calculated ones by SAMTLE which is developed under the assumption that the water flows through the two-layer system obey the Darcy's flow. And after operating the hydraulic gradient(i) of $0.10\~0.55$ upon laboratory model, these seepage characteristics of the embedded rock layer show that Reynolds Numbers are less than 10 and the relationship between these velocities of rock layer(v) and hydraulic gradients(i) is linearly proportional with more than 0.79 of the coefficient of correlation $(R^2)$. And the Reynolds Number of the velocity calculated by the relation of v=ki in the embedded rock layer of OO sea dike is $1\~6$. It shows also laminar flow. Based on these results, it is concluded that the seepage characteristics of embedded rock layer under earth fill can be laminar and Darcy's flow.

We have applied the geophysical survey, mainly electric and electromagnetic (EM) methods, to a test site contaminated by hydrocarbon waste disposal and local spill. The multi-frequency, moving source & receiver EM survey along with ground penetrating radar (GPR) showed a fairly good performance in detection of buried metal pipes and objects. Magnetic survey measuring vertical and horizontal gradients were so sensitive to the small metallic objects spread over the surface that it's hard to discriminate the buried pipe. We chose electrical resistivity, EM and GPR survey to examine the soil contamination. Depth slices of resistivity distribution as the results of the inversion of resistivity and EM data coincided each other and closely matched the contaminated area determined by chemical analysis of the soil samples. GPR images did not show the reflection events related with contamination plume since there are no distinct spill in this site. We inferred the contamination using the penetration depth of the GPR energy, which could be used as auxiliary information to the resistivity and EM results. We summarized the applicability of each survey methods based on this results and proposed a desirable survey scheme for the determination of hydrocarbon contaminated site.
