Guyed masts subjected to turbulent winds exhibit complex vibrations featuring many vibration modes, each of which contributes to various structural responses in differing degrees. This dynamic behaviour is further complicated by nonlinear guy cable properties. While previous studies have indicated that conventional frequency domain methods can reliably reproduce load effects within the mast, the system linearization required to perform such an analysis makes it difficult to relate these results directly to corresponding guy forces. As a result, the estimation of peak load effects arising jointly from the structural action of the mast and guys, such as leg loads produced as a result of guy reactions and mast bending moments, is uncertain. A numerical study was therefore undertaken to study peak load effects in a 295 m tall guyed mast acted on by simulated turbulent wind. Responses calculated explicitly from nonlinear time domain finite element analyses were compared with approximate methods in the frequency domain for estimating peak values of selected responses, including guy tension, mast axial loads and mast leg loads. It was found that these peak dynamic load effects could be accurately estimated from frequency domain analysis results by employing simple, slightly conservative assumptions regarding the correlation of related effects.
A linearization owing to Oseen originally is performed to study the recirculating Navier-Stokes flows at high Reynolds numbers. The procedure is generalized to produce higher order asymptotic expansion for the flow velocity. We call this the Oseen-type expansion of the given flow. As a concrete example, the velocity of a steady Navier-Stockes flow due to a swimming flexible sheet in two-dimensional infinite strip domain is calculated by an asymptotic expansion technic with two-parameters, the Reynolds number R and the perturbation parameter $\varepsilon$ first and then R secondly. The asymptotic result is up to second order in $\varepsilon$.
This study investigated the steady-flow effects present in the numerical computation of the resistance added to a ship in waves. For a ship advancing in the forward direction, a time-domain 3D Rankine panel method is applied to solve the ship motion problem, and the added resistance due to waves is calculated using a near-field method, with the direct integration of the second-order pressure on the hull surface. In the linear potential theory, the steady flow is approximated by the basis potential of a uniform flow or double-body flow in order to linearize the boundary conditions. By applying these two different linearization schemes, the coupling effects between steady and unsteady solutions were examined. Furthermore, in order to analyze the steady-flow effects on the hull geometry, the computation results for two realistic hull forms, a KVLCC2 tanker and DTC containership, were compared. In particular, the mj term, which represents the coupling effects under the body boundary condition, was evaluated considering the geometry of a non-wall-sided ship. Lastly, the characteristics of the linearization schemes were examined in relation to the disturbed waves around a ship and the components of added resistance.
The three-dimensional ship motion with forward speed was solved by a finite element method in the time domain. A boundary value problem was described in the frame of a fixed-body reference, and the problem was formulated according to Double-Body and Neumann-Kelvin linearizations. Laplace's equation with boundary conditions was solved by a classical finite element method based on the weak formulation. Chebyshev filtering was used to get rid of an unwanted saw-tooth wave and a wave damping zone was adopted to impose a numerical radiation condition. The time marching of the free surface was performed by the 4th order Adams-Bashforth-Moulton method. Wigley I and Wigely III models were considered for numerical validation. The hydrodynamic coefficients and wave exciting forces were validated by a comparison with experimental data and the numerical results of the Wigley I. The effects of the linearization are also discussed. The motion RAO was also checked with a Wigley III model through mono-chromatic and multi-chromatic regular waves.

We developed an SD-OCT (Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography) system which uses a GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) for processing. The image size from the SD-OCT system is $1024{\times}512$ and the speed is 110 frame/sec in real-time. K-domain linearization, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform), and log scaling were included in the GPU processing. The signal processing speed was about 62 ms using a CPU (Central Processing Unit) and 1.6 ms using a GPU, which is 39 times faster. We performed an in-vivo retinal scan, and reconstructed a 3D visualization based on C-scan images. As a result, there were minimal motion artifacts and we confirmed that tomograms of blood vessels, the optic nerve, and the optic disk are clearly identified. According to the results of this study, this SD-OCT can be applied to real-time 3D display technology, particularly auxiliary instruments for eye operations in ophthalmology.
In this paper, a new time-domain adaptive predistortion scheme is proposed to compensate for the nonlinearity of high power amplifiers (HPA) in OFDM systems. A complex Wiener-Hammerstein model (WHM) is adopted to describe the input-output relationship of unknown HPA with linear dynamics, and a power series model with memory (PSMWM) is used to approximate the HPA expressed by WHM. By using the PSMWM, the compensation input to HPA is calculated in a real-time manner so that the linearization from the predistorter input to the HPA output can be attained even if the nonlinear input-output relation of HPA is uncertain and changeable. In numerical example, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed and compared with the identification method based on PSMWM.
Vessels stability problems need to resolve the nonlinear mathematical models of rolling motion. For nonlinear systems subjected to random excitations, there are very few special cases can obtain the exact solutions. In this paper, the specific differential equations of rolling motion for intact ship considering the restoring and damping moment have researched firstly. Then the partial stochastic linearization method is applied to study the response statistics of nonlinear ship rolling motion in beam seas. The ship rolling nonlinear stochastic differential equation is then solved approximately by keeping the equivalent damping coefficient as a parameter and nonlinear response of the ship is determined in the frequency domain by a linear analysis method finally.

In this paper, the effective ionization coefficients (${\alpha}-{\eta}$/Po) are measured by the steady state Townsend method in Townsend discharge domain. The effective ionization coefficients are measured in the range 75${\leqq}$E/Po${\leqq}$150(V/Torr. cm) in $SF_{6}$. The values of the effective ionization coefficients are easily and precisely determined by means of the linearization of current growth equation. The effective ionization coefficients of $SF_{6}$ were agreement with that of Bhalla and Craggs.

In this study, the recently developed unscented Kalman filter (UKF) technique is studied for identification of nonlinear structural dynamic systems as an alternative to the extended Kalman filter (EKF). The EKF, which was originally developed as a state estimator for nonlinear systems, has been frequently employed for parameter identification by introducing the state vector augmented with the unknown parameters to be identified. However, the EKF has several drawbacks such as biased estimations and erroneous estimations especially for highly nonlinear dynamic systems due to its crude linearization scheme. To overcome the weak points of the EKF, the UKF was recently developed as a state estimator. Numerical simulation studies have been carried out on nonlinear SDOF system and nonlinear MDOF system. The results from a series of numerical simulations indicate that the UKF is superior to the EKF in the system identification of nonlinear dynamic systems especially highly nonlinear systems.
