Three-Dimensional Finite Element Mesh Generation of Tires Considering Detailed Tread Patterns (상세 트레드 패턴을 반영한 3차원 타이어 메쉬 생성)

  • While contacting directly with ground, the tire tread part is in shape of complex patterns of variable ASDs(anti-skid depth) for various tire performances. However, owing to the painstaking mesh generation job and the extremely long CPU-time, conventional 3-D tire analyses have been performed by either neglecting tread pattern or modeling circumferential grooves only. As a result, such simplified analysis models lead to considerably poor numerical expectations. This paper addresses the development of a systematic 3-D mesh generation of tires considering the detailed tread pattern. Basically, tire body and tread meshes are separately generated, and then both are to be combined. For the systematic mesh generation, which consists of a series of meshing steps, we develop in-house subroutines which utilize the useful functions of I-DEAS solid modeler. The detailed pattern mesh can be imparted partially or completely.

Analysis of Thermal Control Performance of Variable Conductance Heat Pipe with Axial Grooves (축방향 그루브형 가변전열 히트파이프의 열제어 특성)

  • The present study has been conducted to analytically investigate the thermal control performance of variable conductance heat pipe(YCHP) with axial grooves. The condenser port of the YCHP is occupied by a inert gas in which the concentration of gas is varied with the operation temperature and the heat transport capacity is thus varied with the operating temperature due to the variation of inert gas concentration. In this study, numerical evaluation for the thermal control of the YCHP with axial grooves is made from the 1st order diffusion model that considers the diffusive expansion of inert gas by concentration gradient. Ammonia is used as a working fluid and Nitrogen as a control gas in the Aluminum tube. As a result, the thermal performance of YCHP based on diffusion model has been compared with that of YCHP from flat front model. Additionally, it is found that the concentration of inert gas is distributed in the condenser region of YCHP with axial grooves.

Fine Structural Analysis on the Dry Adhesion System of the Jumping Spider Plexippus setipes (Araneae: Salticidae)

  • The cuticle of spider's exoskeleton is a hydrophobic and non-adhesive material, but the jumping spiders have the distinctive attachment apparatus for adhesion on smooth dry surface without sticky fluids. We have examined the whole tarsal appendages of the jumping spider, Plexippus setipes with using scanning electron microscope to reveal the fine structural characteristics of the dry adhesion system. All eight legs have the scopulae with a pair of claws on the tip of feet. Each scopula is composed of two groups of setae that are capable of dry adhesion on smooth surface, and the hook structure of the claw is advanced to move on the rough surface. The setae toward the bottom of the tarsal segment are densely covered by numerous setules on the underside which broadened from middle to distal portion. It has been revealed by this research that the contact area of the setule is always a triangular shape, and these cuticular surfaces are connected by the elongated stalks from the underlying setae. It is likely that the nano-scale structures including a triangular depression and a longitudinal groove on each setule could functionate when the spider detach its feet from the substrate.

Anatomical Considerations of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve During Thyroidectomy (갑상선 수술중 반회 후두 신경의 해부학적 고찰)

  • This study reports a prospective analysis of anatomical variations of recurrent laryngeal nerves during 300 thyroidectomies. During thyroidectomies for variable thyroid diseases. the course of recurrent laryngeal nerve was completely isolated from root of neck to the inferior comus of thyroid cartilage. In left side, nerve(53.7%) predominantly ran posterior to the inferior thyroidal artery(p<0.05) but in right side there was no predominant pattern. There were three nonrecurrent laryngeal nerves in the right side. About half of the cases in both sides(51.2% in right, 50.5% in left side) had one or more branches before terminating at cricothyroidal muscles. The average length of branches from inferior comus of thyroid cartilage to the origination of individual branch were l2.0mm in right side and 13.3mm in left side. In right side, majority(50.7%) of nerves ran though paratracheal space but difference did not reach the statistical but in left side, majority(88.3%) ran through tracheoesophageal groove and it was the dominant pattern(p<0.01), the overall status of passages of the nerve were relatively straight in left side(straight 87.8%, oblique 52.1%).

Selection of Optimal Welding Condition in Root-pass Welding of V-groove Butt Joint (맞대기 V-그루브 이음 초층 용접에서 최적의 용접조건 선정)

  • In case of manufacturing the high quality welds or pipeline, the full penetration weld has to be made along the weld joint. Thus the root pass welding is very important and has to be selected carefully. In this study, an experimental method for the selection of optimal welding condition was proposed in the root pass welding which was done along the V-grooved butt weld joint. This method uses the response surface analysis in which the width and height of back bead were chosen as the quality variables of the weld. The overall desirability function, which is the combined desirability function for the two quality variables, was used as the objective function for getting the optimal welding condition. In the experiments, the target values of the back bead width and the height are 6mm and zero respectively for the V-grooved butt weld joint of 8mm thickness mild steel. The optimal welding conditions could predict the back bead profile(bead width and height) as 6.003mm and -0.003mm. From a series of welding test, it was revealed that a uniform and full penetration weld bead can be obtained by adopting the optimal welding condition which was determined according to the method proposed.

Finite element investigation of the joints in precast concrete pavement

  • This paper measures the mechanical response of precast pavement joints under moving axle loads using the finite-element method, and the models were validated with results of field tests. In order to increase the ability to use the non-linear FE analysis for design and assessment of precast pavement subjected to moving axle load, this paper investigated the effects of different load transfer between the slabs using the ABAQUS finite-element package to solve the nonlinear explicit model equations. The assembly of the panels using dowels and groove-tongue keys has been studied to assess the efficiency of keyway joint system. Concrete damage plasticity model was used to calculate the effects of permanent damages related to the failure mechanisms. With aggregate interlock as the only load transferring system, Load transfer efficiency (LTE) is not acceptable when the axle load reaches to slab joints. The Finite-element modelling (FEM) results showed that keyway joints significantly reduced tensile stresses developed at the mid-slab. Increasing the thickness of the tongue the LTE was improved but with increasing the height of the tongue the LTE was decreased. Stresses are transferred to the adjacent slab efficiently when dowels are embedded within the model. When the axle load approaches joints, tensile damage occurs sooner than compressive damage, but the damage rate remains constant, then compressive damage increases significantly and become the major form of distress under the dowels.

Drawing Process with Rotational Die for Forming Grooves in a Tube (돌기 튜브 성형을 위한 회전 금형 인발공정에 관한 연구)

  • A rotational drawing die which can form a long tube with spiral grooves on the surface is presented. The main feature of the proposed die is a rotation insert that is embedded into the die container for the die to freely rotate with respect to the drawing centerline as the materials are drawn. We employed a three-dimensional finite element model to investigate the effects of the rotational die on the material filling of spiral grooves. The material used in the finite element analysis was stainless 304. We also performed a pilot drawing test to verify the usefulness of the proposed rotational drawing die. Results reveal that the material filling of spiral grooves by the proposed rotational drawing die was in good agreement for both the finite element analysis and the drawing test. We found that the underfill in a conventional drawing die was reduced in the proposed rotational drawing die.

  • Even though, anterior knee pains are most frequently encountered in knee clinics, many physicians use a 'recipe'-type of approach to their treatment. But many predisposing factors have been included internal rotation of the femur, valgus knee alignment, external rotation of the extensor mechanism, patellar alta, a flat trochlear groove, patella with poor congruence and ligatmentous laxity. Many scientific principles on which these commonly used treatment are based, can lead to refinements and improvement in treatment. We reviewed and summarized the recent functional anatomical and biomechanical data that are most relevant to the contemporary treatment of patellofemoral joint disorders.

Sliding Contact Analysis of a Spherical Particle between Rubber Seal and Coated Steel Counterface (시일과 코팅된 스틸면 사이의 구형 입자에 의한 미끄럼 접촉 해석)

  • In this study, a new sliding contact problem involving an elastomeric seal, a spherical particle and a hard coated steel counterface was modeled to investigate the detailed wear mechanisms related to the sealing surface. The model was also used to design the optimum coating conditions. A three-dimensional finite element contact problem was modeled and analyzed using the nonlinear finite element code, MARC. The deformed steel surface and stress distributions are presented for different coating layers and thicknesses. When the coating thickness is relatively small, the entrapped particle produces surface plastic deformations such as groove and torus. In addition, the sealing surface can be damaged by abrasive wear as well as fatigue wear. For a relatively thick and multi-layered coating, on the other hand, surface plastic deformation does not occur, and the amount of abrasive and fatigue wear is reduced. Therefore, the proposed contact model and results can be used in the design of various sealing systems, further intensive studies are required.

Anatomical study on the mandible of the Korean native goat (한국재래산양 하악골에 관한 해부학적 연구)

  • This study was carried out to identify metric and non-metric characteristics of the mandible of the Korean native goat. The results were summarized as follows : The length of the mandible was more correlated with the width of the base of the ramus mandibulae than the margo alveolaris(p<0.01). The height between incisura vasorum facialium and processus condylaris had very high correlation with the height between incisura vasorum facialium and incisura mandibulae(p<0.01). The former was also more correlated to the height of the mandible in front of the first molar tooth than the height of the mandible behind the last molar tooth(p<0.01). The symphysis was formed between both mandibles and it was not able to observe ossification in all case. The number of alveoli for incisor teeth were four each mandible, however three alveoli were observed in two cases. There was usually one or occasionally, two foramina mentalia on the lateral surface of the corpus mandibulae below the margo interalveolaris near the symphysis. The incisura vasorum facialium was poorly developed. A distinct groove was observed rostroventral to the foramen mandibulae. The processus condylaris was shown hammer shape, and the caput mandibulae was flat rectangular form. The processus coronoideus was formed a rectangle and curved laterally. The incisura mandibulae was well developed.
