This study was conducted to select the most suitable dye bath soil of mat rush for good quality. Dry stem weight ranged from 102.5 to 107.0 g, dry stem ratio ranged from 34 to 36%, color of stem ranged from soft gray to heavy gray, degree of softness ranged from high to low and degree of floating ranged from extremely high to low. All the good quality components, such as dry stem weight, dry stem ratio, color of stem, degree of softness and degree of floating showed large variations. Hadong white ceramic soil, the superior dye bath soil of mat rush, showed relatively superior values for all the good quality components with 102.5 g in light dry stem weight, 34% in high dry stem ratio, good color of soft gray in color stem, high in degree of softness and extremely high id degree of floating. The results indicate that dye bath soils shows different adaptabilities to a particular dye bath and Hadong white ceramic soil seems to be the most suitable dye bath soil of mat rush for good quality.
In order to understand the role of seed banks for restoration, seed banks in abandoned rice fields in the Gwangneung National Arboretum, central Korea were investigated using the seedling emergence method. The study sites represented three stages: an initial stage dominated by forbs such as Persicaria thunbergii and Juncus effuses var. decipiens, a middle stage dominated by Salix, and a late stage dominated by Quercus aliena and Prunus padus (in nearby riparian forest chosen as a reference stand). DCA ordination arranged the stands according to the number of years since abandonment. CCA ordination identified the dominant environmental variables correlated most closely with Axes 1 and 2 as $Mg^{2+}$ (intraset correlation was 0.827) and $K^+$ (intraset correlation was -0.677), respectively. Species richness and diversity decreased from the initial stage (H'=2.61) to the middle (H'=1.79) and late (H'=0.75) stages. A total of 49 species $(/m^2)$ and 18,620 seedlings $(/m^2)$ emerged out of the seed bank samples. The DCA ordination and similarity analysis detected a large discrepancy between the composition of the actual vegetation and the seed bank. We conclude that the contribution of seed bank to restoration is low. However, seed bank may help the recovery of forbs after disturbance. Some of our results are consistent with the tolerance model of succession whereas others follow the trajectory of the facilitation model. More research on succession will be required to understand the underlying mechanisms.
The phytosociological study was carried out to investigate the structural characteristics of fallow paddy vegetation in Korea. The vegetation data of total 22 relev$\'{e}$s were analyzed by the Zurich-Montpellier school's method. Six syntaxa (1 subassociations and 5 communities) of fallow paddy were recognized: Polygonetosum thunbergii typicum subass. nov. hoc., Aneilema keisak community, Juncus effusus var. decipiens community, Phragmites commuis community, Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea community, Typha orientalis community of Polygonetum thunbergii Lohm. et Miyawaki 1962. Detrended correspondence analysis showed that Aneilema keisak community and Monochoria vaginalis var. plantaginea community were negatively correlated with soil total nitrogen. Polygonetosum thunbergii typicum subass. nov. hoc. and Phragmites commuis community was distributed in the soil with low pH.
Total 7 moors, Yong-neup on Mt. Daeam, Chilbo Mt. moor, Dogapsa-neup on Mt. Wolchul, Wangdeungiae-neup on Mt. Jiri, Mujechi-neup on Mt. Jungjok, Buljae-neup on Mt. Kyungak and Geoinri-neup on Dongsang, were investigated by literatures and survey. Distribution, conditions, and similarity of dominant species and Orchidaceae on moor were analyzed. The results are follows; There are total 46 wetland plant species observed more than twice from 7 moors. The plants classified as constancy class V, which are appeared more than 80%, are Iris ensata var. spontane, Juncus effusus var. decipiens, Sanguisorba tenuifolia var. alba, Habenaria linearifolia, Sium ninsi, Lobelia sessilifolia, Lastrea theiyptoris, and Eupatorium chinensis var. simplicifolium. Highly appearing Orchidaceae, which was classified to constancy class IV plant, are Habenaria linearifolia, Pogonia japonica, Eipactis thunbergii, and Platanthera mandarinorum. They are the typical index plants of the moors. Habitual environment of Habenaria radiate and Platanthera hologlottis can be affected by environmental aspects such as latitude, altitude and the water quality. However those of Habenaria linearifolia, Epipactis thunbergii, and Pogonia japonica are not affected by latitude and altitude, but may be determined by water condition of wetland. As the result of similarity index analysis for appearance of Orchidaceae identifying each moors in the view of species composition, swamps at Dogapsa-neup and Buljae-neup are very similar. However Yong-neup is totally different from those of Dogapsa-neup and Buljae-neup. Yong-neup had shown the high similarity indices of 0.85 and 0.75 with Wangdeungiae-neup and Mujechi-neup, respectively. Growth properties of wild Orchidaceae at wetland were almost similar. Platanthera mandarinorum and Liparis kumokiri had characteristics of good adaptability. Most of them need light. Pogonia was the only long-day plant. The flowering time of these Orchidaceae was from May to September.

We examined the effect of salt marsh vegetation on the benthic environment in macro-tidal flats at Donggeomdo, Ganghwa, on the west coast of Korea. Nine stations were established along a transect across the tidal flats, including salt marsh, and field sampling was conducted monthly from July 1997 to June 1998. During the study period, environmental parameters fluctuated as follows: salinity, 15.0 to 28.2 psu, exposure time, 613 to 702 hr/m, inundation time, 28 to 117 hr/m, sediment organic carbon, 0.71 to 1.34%, nitrogen, 0.07 to 0.16%, sulfur from 0.07 to 0.22%, mean grain size from 6.3 to $6.9{\phi}$, water content from 19.4 to 44.4%, water temperature from 4.4 to $20.4^{\circ}C$ and temperature of the surface sediments, 2.7 to $31.1^{\circ}C$, in total, seven halophyte species were sampled and found to be vertically distributed across the tidal levels. Carer scabrifolia, Suaeda maritima, Limonium tetragonum and Phragmites communis dominated the upper zone of the salt marsh, Juncus haenkei, Triglochin maritimum and P. communis dominated the middle zone, and Suaeda japonica predominated in the lower area. Principal component analysis (PCA) and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling revealed that the zonation of halophytes was related to environmental variables such as salinity and exposure time. The halophyte communities were likely related to the organic content of the surface sediment.
In order to find out the optimum fertilizer level and planting density of high yielding variety, $Okayma^{#2}$, this experiment was conducted with 3 compositions of fertilizer levels and a different plant density at the experiment paddy field of mat rush in Mokpo Experiment Station, National Institute of Crop Science, RDA. $Okayma^{#2}$, mat rush variety was grown under different fertilizer level and planting density with the highest yielding. Yield components such as stem length, number of stem were highest at the plots with fertilizer level (kg/10a), 80-20-40 and planting density, 20 ${\times}$ 10cm. Judging from the results reported above, at optimum fertilizer level and planting density of mat rush seemed to be 80-20-40kg/10a fertilizer and 20cm row spacing and l0cm or I5cm planting spacing.
This study was conducted to select the most suitable fertilizer level on nursery of mat rush for good quality and high yield. $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=60-30-60$ (kg/10a), fertilizer level on nursery of mat rush showed relatively superior values for all yield components and quality with 57g in fresh weight, 12g in dry weight, 23% in air drying ratio for per plant at the nursery and 125cm in stem length, 150 numbers in stem number, 4,082kg/10a in fresh stem yield, 345kg/10a in long stem yield, 996kg/10a in medium stem yield, 1,421kg/l0a in total stem yield, 34% in dry stem ratio and 30% in long stem ratio at the main paddy field. The results indicate that fertilizer level, $N-P_{2}O_{5}-K_{2}O=60-30-60kg/10a$ in nursery shows different adaptabilities to a particular fertilizer level and 60-30-60 (kg/10a) seems to be the most suitable fertilizer level of mat rush for good quality and high yield.
The marsh vegetation in the vicinity of Tumunsan, Tokyusan National Park, Chollapuk-do, Korea was analysed in order to find out the vegetational characteristics. The total number of vascular plants surveyed were summarized as 39 familieis, 77 genera, 74 species, 18 varieties and 1 form. The ten species such as Juncus effusus var. decipiens, Carex leiorhyncha, Lysimachia vulgaris var. davurica, Sirpus triqueter, Scirpus karuizawensis, Caltha palustris var. membranacea, Carex doniana, Carex humilis, Vicia venosa, and Disporum smilacinum showed the Importance Value more than 10 % in herbaceous marsh vegetation. The species such as Heloniopsis orientalis, Astilbe chinensis var. davidii, Trignotis peduncularis, Lycopus ramosissimus var. japonicus, Iris nertschinskia and Hosta capitata were distributed at very limited or wide spread localities in the marsh. The marsh vegetation in this area is one of the rare and very distinct natural resources in Tokyusan National Park and the proper Action Plan of Management is strongly needed because the projected developing works in this site will act seriously in marsh vegetational changes in the future.

Objective : Many patients take antihypertensive drugs as well as herbal medicines at the same time in order to treat other symptoms or to keep their well-being. In this study, interactions between herbal medicines and synthetic antihypertensive drugs were analyzed. Methods : To investigate the interaction between herbal medicines and synthetic antihypertensive drugs, three electronic databases, including OASIS, Mediline and Sciencedirect were searched. Experimental and clinical studies on the interaction between herbal medicines and antihypertensive drugs were independently reviewed and included. Results : Analyzing selected studies, twenty herbs were found to interact with antihypertensive drugs. Herbs found to increase the antihypertensive effect were Panax ginseng, Carthamus tinctorius, Magnolia officinalis, Silybum marianum, Scutellaria baicalensis, Schisandra chinensis, Sophora flavescens, Piper nigrum, Curcuma longa, Ginkgo biloba, Juncus effuses and Hydrastis canadensis. In contrast, Commiphora myrrha, Rhodiola rosea, Hypericum perforatum, Eurycoma longifolia, and Daturae metel were found to inhibit the antihypertensive effect. Stephania tetrandra could increase or decrease the effect depending on the type of antihypertensive drug. Epedria sínica was suspected of pharmacodynamic interaction with antihypertensive drug. Glycyrrhiza uralensis has been reported to have serious side effects in combination with antihypertensive drugs. Conclusion : These results imply that when used in combination with herbal medicines and synthetic antihypertensive drugs, proper doses and herbs which are to avoid need to be informed to the patients. Despite concerns about interactions between herbal medicines and synthetic drugs, related research is very limited. More systematic researches are needed to give information on patient safety as well as to guide clinical practice.
